Grand Prix gets in gear Gurney-led team strives to be competitive at Del Mar By Geoffrey Ooley Staff Writer a DEL MAR Everyone will be watching the front of the lineup when the Grand Prix of Southern California at Del Mar roars off Sunday. Dan Gurney can only hope they'll see the Toyota GTP car from All American Racing team there. During a Camel GT season that has once again been dominated by Nissan teammates Geoff Brabham and Chip Robinson battle it out for the drivers' championship Sunday Gurney and his Toyota team been in a battle to be competitive. They've had to measure success differently this season.

Last year, Willy Ribbs won the T. GTO division driving title including at Del Mar for Gurney and Toyota. After the move to GTP this season, success for the team has been counted not in races won, but races finished and laps run. That didn't change Friday during the GTP practice sessions. First, during the morning session, Gurney watched Rocky Moran, who shares driving duties with Ribbs, gingerly feel his way around the temporary circuit in his first visit to Del Mar.

Moran's best lap was just a little faster than' mph, nearly eight mph slower than Brabham, who had the fastest lap in the first session. Anderson said he's in the best shape of his life at 192 pounds. That's pounds over his playing weight last season, when he ran for 1,119 yards. The Chargers could use him Sunday against the New York Giants.

But Anderson isn't in San Diego for the first time in months to report for duty. He's here to say goodbye. "I just wanted to come here to tie up some loose ends and say goodbye to a few close friends, said Anderson. Anderson, who gained 2,250 yards in four years with the Chargers, flew in Friday morning with his wife Ollie and said he would return to his home in Tampa, today. He visited teammates and former teammates (including Lionel James and Curtis Adams) but did not meet with director of football operations Steve Ortmayer.

There have been no conversations between Ortmayer and Anderson's agents in three weeks. But if San Diego State has its way, Pacific will pay the price when it provides the competition in the Aztecs' homecoming football game at tonight at Jack Murphy Stadium.

"It's a major challenge for our football team to beat somebody they're supposed to beat and beat them in the right way, SDSU coach Al Luginbill said. 6 We're looking forward to our first win in 1990, although we would accept a win here if they forced it on us. The National Weather Service forecast showers all weekend and predicted the storm might last into early next week. Game 3 is still tentatively set for Tuesday, following a week delay Warriors come back to upset Mustangs, 16-13 By Joe Taylor Staff Writer FALLBROOK Jay Craven had plenty of praise for the Fallbrook High football team's offense Friday night.

And he's the defensive coordinator. But Craven is wise enough to dish out credit where credit is due. He thanked the offense for sparking his defense to life and boosting the Warriors to a 16-13 Palomar League victory over highly-regarded San Dieguito. "That's the second week in a row we've come out flat and went down by two touchdowns," Craven said. "The offense got us going and gave us a chance." Kelly Fieux completed 20-of-29 passes for 237 yards and two touchdowns.

Chris Gunther booted a 22-yard field goal with 1:07 remaining to seal Fallbrook's second straight triumph. "They made great throws and made great catches. Our defense was right there. That's what makes this hard to take," San Dieguito defensive coach Ed Wiley said. Fallbrook stays in the Palomar League playoff picture with a 2-2 record.

The Warriors, now 2-5 overall, opened the season with five losses. San Dieguito slides to 1-3, 4-3. For the second straight game, Fallbrook fought back from a two-touchdown deficit to score the game-winning points in the final minutes. Despite being overmatched physically, the diminutive Lancers went toe-to-toe with the bigger Bulldogs. Host Carlsbad came away with respect, but little else in a heartbreaking 21-20 defeat, sealed when it failed on a two-point conversion attempt in the final minute.

Frank Thomas rushed for 128 yards on 33 carries to lead Ramona, now 3-1 in the Avocado League and 5-2 2 overall. Carlsbad drops to 1-2 and 3-4. The Bulldogs most likely are headed to the 2A playoffs for the first time in 16 years, while Carlsbad is left scrambling for one of the 16 playoff spots. "This win means we've turned the corner," said Gatorade-soaked Ramona coach Mel Galli. "We're in, and we're there for the first time in a while." Meanwhile, Carlsbad coach Rick Brown must try to regroup his troops.

They've lost three of their last four games. "We're discouraged we didn't beat them," Brown said. "Our kids came back, and I'm proud of that. But we have a lot of broken hearts right now.
