JERRY BRYAN, Of Uncertain Quantity PHILLIPS HI BEATEN BY SIMPSON IN LOOP Crimsons Must Play Off Tie With Panther Cubs In Prep Cage League BY BILLY BOYKIN The Purple Tornado of Simpson rose to the heights of its former glory for the first time this season at the Boys Club Tuesday afternoon when they trounced the highly respected Crimson fold of Phillips High, seemingly certain of the prep league championship, by the unquestioned score of 25 to 20 in one of the most heated struggles of the year. The Southern frosh lowered the colors of Woodlawn by 29-25, and hence gave them a deadlock with Phillips for the leadership of the league The defeat administered Phillips was one of the greatest upsets of the year in prep circles and came like a thunderbolt from a clear sky. Ben Chapman was missing from the Crimson ranks, but Simpson started fast and outfought the Phillips cohorts, beat them to the ball and shot like the Tornado stars of old in their sensational victory. Phillips and the Southern freshmen have each lost a pair of struggles, one to each other and one to an outside team.

The deadlock will require another game between the duo to decide the championship of the league. Just when this game will be played is rather doubtful, as Phillips will enter the district tourney Friday and Saturday and will likely prefer to wait until after the tournaments are over before encountering the hard playing rats for titular honors. When it does come, the big thriller of the will very probably take place. It will be two fine playing, hard fighting battling for a championship. Simpson Stars Simpson jumped away with a bang from the start in their game with Phillips by looping a trio of field goals before the almost certain champions were aware the game was on.

The Crimsons began fighting back with great spirit, but the great fight Ten Colleges Are Entered In S.I.A. Basket Ball Meet GREENVILLE, S. Feb. 24. HOCHWALT GRAND JUNCTION, Feb. Speed Boy, setter owned by the Idlewild kennels of Vaiden, Miss, handled by Dr. T. P. Flowers, one of the owners, won the the central states bird dog trials, which was concluded here Tuesday.

Second place was awarded to the setter, Vanity Manning, owned and handled by A. G. Manning, of Memphis, and third to the setter, Pastime Phil, owned by J. C. Battaille and W.

W. Stoner, handled by Stoner, of Courtland, Miss. Although there were as many pointers as setters competing in the stake, the former breed swept the boards, accounting for all three places. The derby, however, was not the -class stake that the event was, whien came to a conclupuppy sion Monday, although in the winners stood out above the field and deserved their winner placethe stake won his place in the first series when he not only showed range and speed, but good work on game. In this respect he surpassed that of Vanity Manning, but the latter is a classy setter and looks like a promising candidate for the all-age events next season.

Plenty Of Birds Tuesday morning was cloudy and cold, but birds seemed to be plentiful enough and the dogs had more opportunities for pointing game than they really took advantage Vanity Manning ran her second heat with High Speed Boy, and in the matter of actual speed really beat the winner of the stake. Pastime Phil might have gone higher and, indeed, taken first honors, but he was beaten to the birds by his brace mate, the pointer, queis, also handled by Mr. Manning. Iroquois made the best showing the entire field en game, finding two bevies of birds in the first series, but he seemed all out of form in his final heat and showed little class in his work. The Crimsons could not get going right, and the Simpsons were staging a terrific, cool game which brought results. Reid, chiefly, aided materially by Green and Fulton, were making their shots count and they were Gropping with regularity.

The Tornado was leading at the half by seven points and then practically held their own in the final stanza. Malcolm Laney, with two long shots from near center toward the beginning of the second half, almost deadlocked things and put the Crimsons in fine position to stop the winners, but this threat died out. The Southern frosh had plenty of trouble with the Colonels of Woodlawn, who almost handed Phillips the champ'enship despite the latter's loss to Simpson. The rats strong, but toward the close were almost headed. Frock Pate and Walton Laney looped the netting for several field goals near the close and deadlocked the count on the rats.

However a pair of field goals by Neipp and O' Brien gave the frosh their margin of victory by four points as the gun barked. Vickery, of the Howard rats. took It upon himself to beat the University Gamecocks in the initial struggle of the afternoon, and he did it right away. He scored 13 points in the first half and then added six more in the final stanza, more than enough to annex the battle. Tommy Hutchins and en Brasfield performed well for university.
