"From the Lincoln County line at Big Creek the detour is over narrow gravel to Moscow Mills, which stretch is regularly maintained by state maintenance forces at all times. "At Moscow Mills the road joins the regularly marked United States road No. 61 and thence follows over the old gravel road to Troy, regularly maintained by state maintenance forces. "From Troy to Eolla, a distance of nineteen and one-half miles, regularly marked U. S.

R. No. 61, passes over an old toll road of semirock and gravel construction. are places where deep ruts occur in periods of excessive raintall, but there is a small amount of roek and gravel under the mud, which at an earlier period was graded over old rock and gravel. "There are also times in periods of excessive rainfall when this stretch of road is slick, due to this mud over old rock and gravel, but the mud is never deep enough to mire a car or stop traffic.

Creek Overflows. "Immediately north of Troy, between. the grade crossing of the short line railroad and Cuivre River Bridge stage on Cuivre River rises over this bottom too deep to ford with 8 and traffie at such periods is held, up twenty-four to forty-eight hours until flood waters recede. "Inquiry can always be made at the Troy garages, Jones Hotel or office of Troy Free Press as to the condition of this high water before leaving Troy. "There are two regular maintenance patrol crews working between Troy and Eolia, assuring traffic of regular state maintenance.

"From Eolla through Louisiana to Frankford the state maintenance forces are regularly maintaining the old gravel toll road, on which there are no toll charges a detour, the County Court of Pike County having abandoned a this road as a toll road In June. Under Construction. "This detour at this date is over gravel for its entire length, except one and one-half miles, which will be all fully surfaced with gravel by November 10. "The regular location of U. S.

Highway No. 61, from Eolia to Frankford, is all under construction concrete slab. except nine and one-haff miles in Bowling Green and north to McCune Station. Owing to right-of-way trouble in Bowling Green, -the State Highway Commission has not been able to let a contract to fill in this gap. Eolia to Bowling Green the contractor has completed about onehalf the mileage to date and will compelled to shut down for the winter on account of cold weather about November 10.

This will leave the portion next to Eolia for next spring. contractor expects to carry on what grading operations weather conditions will permit during the winter; as he has poured slab on practically all of the completed grading and a large portion of grading still remains uncompleted. "The detour over old gravel toll road from Eolia through Louisiana to Frankford should satisfactorily carry all of the traffic for the next nine months. 80 Per Cent Completed. "From McCune Station to Frankford on the new location of U.

S. Highway No. 61 the contractor har about 60 per cent of the grading completed and all bridges and culverts built. This will be concreted early next year. We are trying to carry the Frankford to New London traffic along with our construction instead of over long round about detours over impassable roads.

All of the concrete from New London south to Pike County line at Spencer Creek has been poured and the traffic is traveling those portions which make contact with the old gravel road until the entire stretch to Frankford can be completed. "The paving outfit moved on October to Frankford and started pavIng north to join the completed work at Spencer Creek bridge. "There is a stretch of 3000 feet where the traffic is carried along the side of the slab on a narrow one way strip of gravel with watchmen to direct traffic until slab is cured. "This stretch is being poured with an admixture of calcium chloride using a richer mix than regularly used and opening to traffic up to 10,000 pounds in seven to nine days. Open Road November 10.

"The pouring of the 3000 foot stretch should be completed Monday evening and opened to traffic on the morning of November 10, after which time we can easily handle all traffic over this route without a long detour over any dirt roads. "The large fill immediately south of New London has been graveled and four miles detour cut out October 21, so that traffic can easily pass over this 2000 foot stretch which has been extremely bad during the past period of excessive rainfall. "New London to Hannibal, over regular marked route U. S. Highway No.

"This detour is dragged regularly when weather conditions permit by team patrols, and with several days wind and sunshine is fairly passable to light traffic. "From Wayland to Alexandria at the Des Molnes River levee 18 a gravel constructed of La Grange gravel and passable at all times. It was completed in the late fall of 1924. "A new bridge over the Des Moines River at St. Francisville, six miles north of Weyland, is being promoted at this time, and a county bond issue is being voted on Iowa side to help finance this project, which will give north connections to Fort Madison, Burlington, Iowa City, Cedar Rapids, St. Paul and Minneapolis. an early day in the embryonic of good roads this United States Highway No. 61 was named and so marked the Scenic Highway and, when constructed by the Missouri State Highway Commission, besides being a high type 'Will Complete Airline June 1' ---Piepmeier Continued from First Page.

"Every county in the state now has hard-surfaced roads, and the completed, sections are being linked such manner as to insure the early completion of all-weather roads across the state in several different directions. "The money which will be spent for roads on the state road system from now will begin to make a much better showing, 88 the pensive sections and bridges are now about completed.

The work from now on will be mostly hard-surfacing and improving sections of road which are now in reasonably good condition. It 1s expected, therefore, that within the next year or two there will be several continuous hard-surfaced roads entirely across the state east and west and north and south. "The department plans to spend about $13,000,000 in 1927. of this amount $5,000,000 will be from the sale of road bonds, which will complete the $60,000,000 program. All of the bond money will soon be under contract and the work will be completed and paid for early next spring.

About $7,000,000 or $8,000,000 worth of work that should have been completed this year, will be carried over to 1927, due to the bad weather conditions which we have had during the montha of September and October. Louis to Springfield and Joplin. While this road is not completed, the soil conditions on most of it permits trattic to use It any day in the year without encountering mud. The road from St. Louis south to Memphis, U. 61, 18 also an all- road, and many a portions of it are finished.

During several days of last August a traffic count WAS taken on a number of the state roads in various parta of the state. The volume of traffic was, in many CARES, surprising.
