14 ALTOONA TRIBUNE, Friday, March S3, Buttons StrvltM FUNERAL NOTICES BUSINESS SERVICES REAL ESTATE FOB SALE MARKET-STOCK REPORTS Martin Wins Top Primary Ballot Spot HARRIS BURG, March 21 CP) Three of the four candidates backed by the Republican state organization will be listed above their independent opponents on the May 21 primary ballots as a result of the election bureau's official lottery today. The No. 1 position was drawn by Governor Martin, for U. S. senator; Attorney General James H.

Duff for governor, and William S. Livengood, for renomination for secretary of internal affairs. John U. Shroyer, who lost his job as highways secretary as an outcome of a dispute over his candidacy against Duff, drew last place. James F.

(Baron) Dougherty of Lieperville gained a fleeting advantage by catching first place, over U. S. Senator Joseph F. Guffey in the Democratic senatorial listing. While the drawings were going on, the Dauphin county court ruled Dougherty off the ballot as the result of a suit contesting validity of his nomination petitions.

The elections bureau said Dougherty's name would be dropped as soon as the bureau received the court's ruling. Ralph W. Sockman, D. speaker at the Community Lenten service, second in the series, last evening at the First Methodist church, used as his theme, "The Rainbow Around the Rev. Sockman, who is pastor of the Christ Methodist of New York city, and NBC radio preacher, made a plea for justice in individual relationships and in society. Basing his theory upon the idea, "God is, just, the power of God is administered by the dictates of a justice based upon love, he stressed three traits making it possible to arrive at justice; the relation of insight to justice, imagination and justice, and love and justice.

Dr. Stockman said there is now a necessity of dealing justly with all problems, as God has dealt justly with human personalities. Miss Marian Douglas, Minister of conducted special selections by the chancel choir. Rev. Harry Babcock, district superintendent for Altoona Methodists, assisted Rev.

Record By LORN A BERLIOZ (Hector): SYM FANTASTIQUE; by the San Francisco Symphony' Orchestra, Pierre Mon-teux. Conductor (Victor Album DM-994). This "Episode in the of an Artist" was written i as the outgrowth of Berlioz' i great love for Henrietta Smith-tson, an Irish Shakespearean ac-i.

tress. Being a man of powerful passions and of fantastic imagination, and since music was his jfgreatest means of expression, Icmsll u-nrutpr that the "Svm- phonie Fantastique" was his best i and most elaborate work. The program of the Symphony tells fof a sensitive young musician iwho tries to poison himself, but the opium he took was to weak I to cause his death. It did throw him into a stupor of fitful sleep-jing and dreaming. Written in five movements, we hear (1) Dreams and Passions: here he I dreams of his ardent love, rag-' ing jealousy and his religious consolation; (2) At The Ball: as the dancing becomes more brilliant and exciting, he suddenly sees his Beloved One; (31 Scene In the Fields: in the distance pastoral music is heard, all is calm and serene except the thoughts of the dreamer; (4) March to the Scaffold: here the young musician dreams he has killed his Beloved One.

was honor guest at a birthday dinner Wednesday evsning at his home, marking his tenth birthday. By Ed Ondd VERA-ELLEN HOLLYWOOD Shapely Vera- Ellcn, who spends her days kick ing, leaping and pirouetting as a movie dancer, eats hardly enough to keep a rea sonably active canary alive. Shift inriiratlftri I a medium-sized jean of pineap- uic II il I dressing room table and said a lunch. For dinner I really let Vtra-Ellen go roasts and such, but for breakfast I have half a shredded wheat biscuit with a little wheat germ and hot water on it." I shuddered. Vera-Ellen, you see, is reducing.

Her thighs did look a little plump not plump, exactly, but muscular, the ou'd expect for a girl whose "mother put her in dancing school at nine so she'd get some exercise. Up to then, strange to say, this versatile screen sprite hadn't twirled a single turn but had kept her nose in books. That hyphenated name, Vera-Ellen where did she get that? Her brown eyes sparkled. She was most alluring in a scanty, ruffly costume that fluffed out from the hips above classy bare legs browned with make-up. "When Mother was expecting me, she had a dream that she would have a baby girl named Vera-Ellen; she even saw the hyphen in her dream.

And so, though Daddy didn't like it, that became my name." Daddy was Martin F. Rohe, a Cincinnati piano dealer. Vera-Ellen fancied simple screen monickers like Margo and Annabella and refused to adopt a synthetic last name for pictures. This former New York night club and stage dancer has one of the most interestingly cluttered dressing rooms in town. In various piles were some 25 pairs of shoes for use in 'Three Little Girls in Blue." On the wall were a gag gift from the prop men a photo advertising a "Whisky without, a heidache" (Vera-Ellen doesnt drink or smoke): some 40 color postcards of flowers, fruits and animals, sent her by her father when she was touring with a show, and a miniature Christmas tree which sentimental Vera-Ellen refuses to remove from niche.

Vera-Ellen had to resume dancing then. Feasting on lamb stew in the studio commissary a little later, I had a distressing mental nictnre: Vera-Ellen. can-opener trside her, munching pineapple in her solitary' dressing roum. Nitroglycerine was invented in 1S46 bv Ascanio Sobrero. Review W.

I've heard a hundred versions of where that treasure started front, and what became of the crew. I believe it was put aboard one night at Pine street, below Emporium. A woman who had no business to be saw it and told it to me; yet she had a right to know the story, and by the time she described it to me it did nobody any harm.
