TIMES-ADVOCATE, Escondido, Tuesday, August 22, 1989 D5 Chargers Notes no-show for national TV By Kevin Scattareggia Times cate Sportswriter SAN DIEGO By Jim McMahon's terms, Monday was probably a calm day. But for what the Chargers are used to, McMahon's first full day with the team was eventful. The day was scheduled to start early for the former Chicago Bears quarterback, acquired in a trade Friday. McMahon, who celebrated his 30th birthday Monday, was supposed to appear on both NBC's "Today Show" and the "CBS Morning News." Because the shows originate live from the East Coast, McMahon had to be out of bed by 4:15 a.m. PST for a guest shot on the CBS show at 4:35 a.m.

and on NBC at 4:40 a.m. But as it got closer and closer to air time, McMahon was nowhere in sight. Throughout the morning, Today Show host Bryant Gumbel announced they were in search of McMahon, who could not be found. "We've got three people looking for Jim Gumbel informed viewers. Finally, Gumbel told viewers, "The Jim McMahon watch is over." In the place of the colorful quarterback, NBC put a sound technician from the local NBC affiliate KNSD on the air with sunglasses, a la McMahon.

And why did McMahon miss the TV appearances? He said he simply forgot. McMahon didn't forget an interview with ABC's Lynn Swann a after the team's afternoon practice. The lackluster taped interview ran at halftime of ABC's Monday Night Football game between the Washington Redskins and Minnesota Vikings. Add McMahon: After his first practice with the team, what was Coach Dan Henning's impression? "He looked pretty good," said Henning. "He's still got to pick up on some of the signals.

Each receiver has a little different way they run, and he's got to pick up on that, But all in all, it was pretty good." McMahon is scheduled to play at least one quarter and possibly the first half Wednesday at San Francisco. Roberto Azar, Argentina, right now," Henning said. "I have a feeling he'll want to do as much as we'll let him do, and if he's ready, we'll let him do a bunch." Rookie Billy Joe Tolliver, who threw two touchdowns against Chicago, is expected to get most of the rest of the time that McMahon doesn't play. Last add McMahon: The effect of the McMahon trade has become apparent at the ticket office. In the four days since the deal was announced, the Chargers have sold 500 season tickets, according to Jack Teale, director of administration. This compares to a normal total for this time period of 150 season tickets.

Monday alone, the club sold 200 season tickets, Teale said. Injury update: Rookie wide receiver Wayne Walker (knee strain) is doubtful for the 49ers game. Free agent guard Larry Williams (shoulder), who hasn't participated in any contact work yet and is still on the physically unable to perform list, is questionable for Wednesday's game. "After I talk to him tonight and (trainer) Keoki (Kamau), we need to find out where he fits," Henning said. "If he doesn't come in Wednesday, then it's a hard decision whether to take him off and put him in and work him for a week for Phoenix (Sept.

1). Then where will he fit?" Chargers Continued from page D1 Another approach the Chargers have taken with O'Neal seems to be a success, at least through the early part of camp. Henning, wishing to protect O'Neal's knee and needing help at linebacker, decided to move the defensive end to outside linebacker, where he could team with Billy Ray Smith. "We just thought it was a good way to get him outside where he didn't have to worry about getting his knee cracked on," Henning said. "It also frees Leslie to do what he does best rush the passer." Said linebackers Coach Mike Haluchak: "Leslie is such a really good athlete.

He can do a lot of things. You combine his intelligence, his knowledge of our defense and his athletic ability and you have a guy who can be an important player." O'Neal gave what Chargers coaches hope is a preview of the season ahead with his performance Saturday at Chicago. O'Neal looked very much like the passrushing whiz of old with his two sacks of Bears quarterback Jim Harbaugh. Overall, the Chargers recorded five sacks. "That felt good.

I felt good about the condition was in," he said. "I was able to adjust, make the moves. The fun thing was that we were able to make adjustments throughout the game that enabled Sc Scoreboard Malone signs with the Jets HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (AP) Quarterback Mark Malone, released by the San Diego Chargers last week after they traded for Jim McMahon, was signed today by the New York Jets as a replacement for the injured Pat Ryan. The 30-year-old Malone, a 10- year veteran, played in 12 games last year for the Chargers, starting eight.

He completed 147 of 272 passes for 1,580 yards with six touchdown passes and 13 interceptions. A first-round draft choice of Pittsburgh from Arizona State in 1980, Malone was acquired by San Diego after the 1987 season for two draft choices. Ryan, a 12-year veteran who was the backup to Ken O'Brien, tore ligaments in his left knee in Sunday night's 19-10 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles. us to make the plays." Said Haluchak: "He's been outstanding, particularly the last game. He had some big plays, but that's his game he's a big-play player.

You just try to get him in position to make those big plays." In the Chargers' defensive schemes, O'Neal should have plenty of opportunities to be in position to make those big plays. That's what happens when you've struggled through nearly two years of operations a and therapy to play again. "I try not to get so involved in what's going on right now because a lot of players that you're playing against right now won't be in the league," he said.

"Plus, you don't know who's giving their full-out effort as compared to just getting by." So far, O'Neal has done more than just get by on a knee that was injured to the point that many predicted he would never play football again. It's been a slow process, but he is well on his way back. "The knee has been holding up fine. I haven't really had any problems," he said. "I think the nice thing about it is that after the Dallas game, when the first team played almost the whole game, it responded well.

"I feel like I'm right on schedule. I'm accomplishing things on the field, and I'm seeing improvement in my game from week to week on the field." But O'Neal insists thoughts of comparing his play to that of his rookie season are for others to make, not him. "I've put that behind me," he said. "I'm a different person now. I'm playing a different position.

The only thing the team is expectof me is to go out and play solid and to be able to count on me every down, every play. that's what I expect from myself, definitely."
