TIMES ADVOCATE FRIDAY, AUGUST 26, 1994 C3 CMOS NOTEBOOK Culverhouse remembered as NFL leader NFL ROUNDUP: Bucs owner dies at age 7 5 of heart failure following 20-month bout with lung cancer Wire Services NEW ORLEANS Hugh F. Culver-house, founding owner of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers football team and self-styled Southern gentleman who liked to be known as Mr. died Thursday morning at the Medical Center of Louisiana in New Orleans from heart failure after a 20-month battle with lung cancer. He was 75. The funeral will be Tuesday in Tampa, Fla.

Culverhouses death should not have a signifi- Culverhouse cant immediate impact on the day-to-day operations of the Bucs, who will play their final exhibition game tonight in Tampa. Bucs vice president Rich McKay and Sam Wyche, the teams coach and director of football operations, have been handling all of Tampa Bays football-related decisions. Culverhouse did not live to fulfill his dream of seeing the Bucs win a Super Bowl. More than that, losing seasons since 1983 were a source of frustration. Fans and media critics frequently blamed the Bucs lack of success on Culverhouse, accusing him of not paying enough to players and not establishing a football-smart front office.

Responsible or not for the Bucs woes, Culverhouse will be remembered as the man who bought the Bucs for $16 million in 1976. He also will be remembered in the NFL as perhaps its most powerful owner during the turbulent years of the mid-1980s. A lawyer, Culverhouse was chairman of the leagues two most powerful groups the Finance Committee and Executive Committee of the Management Council. His legacy to the league, McKay said, is that he brought the financial aspects of the league out of the dark ages and into the modern age. The man had power.

He gave of himself, former NFL commissioner Pete Rozelle said last year. Cotts 24, Browns 7: At Indianapolis, Marshall Faulk, whose longest run in four games was 12 yards, ca jght a 72-yard touchdown pass as the Colts completed their frst unbeaten preseason since 1989 with a victory over Cleveland. The former San Diego State running back picked up only 26 yards on nine carries. But his longTD reception from Jim Harbaugh in the second quarter erased an early 7-0 Browns lead. Broncos 30, Cardinals 21: At Denver, Hugh Miilen threw two touchdown passes 29 seconds apal late in the first half, leading the Broncos over Arizona.

Miilen, who played virtually the entire game one day after Inheriting the No. 2 quarterbackjob, completed 22 of 32 passes for 290 yards as Denver snapped a three-game exhibition losing streak to the Cardma's. Millens 19-yard TD pass to Cednc Tillma' gave tne Broncos a 16-15 lead with 36 seconds remaimrg in the haf, but Miliens pass fell incomplete on the 2-point con-ve'Sion. Saints 28, Cowboys 10: At New Orleans the Saints cranked up their running game, getting touchdowns from Mano Bates and Derek B-own, and saw glimmers of their tradema-k hard-hitting defense as they be at Dallas. Bates, tne Saints No.

Oilers: Defensive end Lee Williams, waived by Houston on Wednesday, returned to his home in Florida, vowing not to resign with the Oilers for the NFL's $162,000 minimum salary.

At this point, I don 't know what they're going to offer me," Williams told KRIV-TV of Houston. 1 simply will not play for the minimum. I think they understand that $1,125 million this see son, was waived after he failed his physical examination. The Oilers hope to resign Williams for a lower sala'y. Williams is recovering from knee surgery but was unable to work out with, the team in training camp.

Steelers: With the season barely a week away and a reliable kicker threatening to take his job, Gary Anderson re lented and showed up at practice without a new contract 'For now, he's not certain when or if he'll get more money. There's a fair amount of nsk involved on my part" Anderson said. But I feel comfortable there will be good-faith negotiations. Anderson, a threetime Pro Bowl kicker, steadfastly refused to report until the Steelers renegotiated the finai year of his six-year contract, worth $350,000 plus a $50,000 roster bonus this season. Anderson knew the Steelers were prepanrgto open the season with ex-Bronco and ex-Giant David readwen as their kicker.

Saints: Deion Sanders said he's bringing his road show to a close and plans to decide for which NFL team hell p'ay by Monday. I really want to get this over with attheendofthis week, the next few days, or early next week, Sanders said. Im tired of this socalledtour, but things have to be done this way, because you wouldn't srt at home and buy a cat You'd go look at the car and check out the car and drive tne car. Thats why Im he-e." The two-sport star, faveling with an entourage tna. incudes his mother, Connie Sanders, and music Hammer, said his visit to the New Orleans Saints was his last official tnp.

SAN DIEGO The Chargers wide receivers, questioned through the exhibition season, picked the final preseason game to turn in their best performance. Shawn Jefferson, Tony Martin and Mark Seay combined to catch eight passes for 116 yads and two touchdowns in the Chargers' 24-6 victory over the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday night. Our receivers did a good job of catching the football," said coach. Bobby Ross.

"We got a little sloppy in the second half. But I was pleased with the first half." Martin and Jefferson each had three receptions. Seay had two and both Jefferson and Seay had touchdown catches. "We seem to be putting things together," said We went out there and played pretty well. I think we're beginning to understand the concept of the offense.

We expect to get better." TTv Tv 1 li'h'M IL A CHARGERS: Team gets first victory Andre Coleman, fighting to make the team as a kick returner, didn 't hurt his chances against the Rams. Coleman finished the day fielding three kickoffs for 49 yards and two punt returns for 47 yards. He also had a 19-yard kickoff return nullified by a penalty. With this being the last game before the roster is tnmmed down to its fn a. total of 53 on Sunday, was Coleman womed before the game? "I was relaxed," he said.

"I wasn 't womed. I was just havirgfun. I know what I can do and I have confidence in my ability. I was just waiting for it all to gel." OPEN DAYS Incumbent John Kidd and Australian challenger Darren Bennett got their final kicks in the battle for the puntingjob. With the Chargers offense rolling up the yardage against the Rams, neither got a lot of work. Kidd punted twice, Bennett once. Kidd had a 35-yard punt to the Los Angeles 13 that was returned for no gam. He also had a SSyanierthat went into the end zone for a touchback.

Bennett boomed a 57-yarder to the Rams 8, but Johnny Bailey returned 142 yards to the 50. Bennett got his first chance to make a tackle, bJt missed Bai'ev. I I n'Jr-aJ I age, then bad. I'm looking forward to teeing it up for real and playing more than half a game. Miller completed 13 of 19 for 118 yards and one interception for the Rams.

But he couldnt move them into the end zone. A 41-yard field goal by Tony Zen-dejas on the Rams' first possession of the game were the only points the Rams could muster under Miller. Strong safety Darren Carringtons interception with 2:24 remaining in the second quarter set up the Chargers final TD of the first half. Carrington, who collected his second interception of the preseason, picked off Miller at the Rams 14 and returned it to the 5. Turnovers are always going to be a good thing, especially in the red zone, Carrington said.

We know what we need to do. There were little things that needed to be taken care of tin the secondary). The Chargers pass defense once again gave up big yardage numbers. Miller and backup Jamie Martin combined to complete 26 of 37 passes for 269 yards. But the Chargers didn't give up big plays.

They rushed for 95 yards, and the Rams were limited to only 36. Natrone Means led the way, picking up 41 yards on 10 carries. He credited the offensive line. The holes were there just like the last couple of games, Means said. The Chargers defense also became a factor.

They set up two touchdowns with turnovers. A blitzing unior Seau set up their second TD. He recovered a hobbled handoff between Rams quarterback Chris Miller and running back David Lang at the Rams 16. A holding penalty backed up the Chargers, but Humphries eventually found Shawn Jefferson with a 22-yard TD pass on the second play of the second quarter. The Chargers got a 34-yard field goal from John Carney on their third series, taking a 17-3 lead with 7:47 remaining in the second quarter.

For me, the span of the last three games is the best I've played since I've been here, Humphries said. I hope it carries over to the regular season. important to stay consistent.
