38 THE SPOKESMAN -REVIEW Feb. 11, 1982, Spokane, Wash. For Lietzke, it's only good if odd HONOLULU (AP) Bruce Lietzke has a problem, and there really doesn't seem to be much he can do about it. It involves the calendar. "I had very good years in '77, '79 and '81, not very good years in '76, '78 and '80," Lietzke said after a practice round for the $325,000 that gets started Thursday.

Hawaiian Open Golf Tournament tunately, this is one of those evennumbered years." A look at the record confirms that even-numbered years have not treated Lietzke too well. Last year, numbered serves as an example. By this stage of the season in 1981, the game's most successful cross-handed putter had won two titles and more than $100,000. This year, he has one finish better than 34th and has won $7,000. Lietzke has won eight times.

Six of them have come in oddnumbered years. His winnings provide another gauge. winnings in 1976, '78 and '80 were $69,229, $113,905 and $163,884. But in the oddnumbered years, '77, '79 and '81, he last season was fourth on the list collected on $202,156, $198,439 and with $343,446. Six Compton athletes dotted the 1981 WSU roster, including recordbreaking running back Tim Harris and quarterback Ricky Turner. WSU a are linebacker Jon Inions of The JC players going to Yakima Valley, placekicker-punter Mike Wold of Walla Walla and wide receiver Markham Watt of Moorpark, Calif. Of WSU's 17 prep signees, eight are from Washington, including three from State AAA champion Richland quarterback Mark Bircher, running back Tom Cushing and lineman John Wunderlich. The Cougars landed three other quarterbacks Californians Kitrick Taylor and Jim Krakoski, and Cashmere's Ron Collins, brother of former Cougars Ken and Keith.

"We recruited several quarterbacks," Walden acknowledged, "not all of whom will play quarterback. We recruited more of them as athletes." Washington, meanwhile, didn't any quarterbackers but lured sign, handful and pass catchers. Anderson is one of six linemen joining the Huskies perhaps the most a celebrated being 6-5, 240- pound Clay Griffith of Miles City, a Parade Magazine allAmerica. The best of the receivers appears to be Tim Peoples of San Jose, all-Northern California and his league's MVP for catching 33 passes for 543 yards and 13 TDs as And the disappointment in losing Willhite may have been tempered somewhat by the signing of Andy Fuimaono, a 250-pound fullback from South San Francisco. Willhite a top sprinter with 20.6 in the 10 200 said do he began to best of 10.24 in the 100 meters and waver from his original choice because "I started wondering what I really wanted to do.

"I worried about not getting enough publicity in track if I went to Washington, and I thought about the halfback situation at Washington." The Huskies already have freshman Jacque Robinson, their Rose Bowl star, and former prep allAmerica Mike Vindivich, who missed last season with a knee injury. In addition to Willhite, Oregon landed two quarterbacks Kevin Hicks and Stephen Jones from California, along with three JC linemen and' 15 high school recruits. Elsewhere in the Pac-10, new California coach Joe Kapp's perseverance paid off in the signing of highly-sought running back Elton Veals of Merritt JC and teammate Delton Edwards, who had originally gone to Illinois but left before classes began. The Bears' top prep signee was Dwight Garner, a 5-9, 180- pound running back who had more than 400 all-purpose yards in Oakland's city championship game. Southern Cal coach John Robinson called 1982 "one of our better recruiting stat sheet 7 Menu Feb.

They said the office would determine within 72 hours whether Sulaiman would remain in jail. He was arrested by capital police Tuesday on charges of illegal possession, and conspiracy to smuggle artificacts country.

Police displayed dozens of the 5,000 artifacts they found in a printshop warehouse he owns in a small town outside of Mexico City. Experts said the pieces are worth about $200 million. Police said it was one of the biggest quantities of archaeological pieces that they had found in private hands. In Mexico, the law now requires that pieces must be registered with the government, even for domestic possession, because they are considered part of the national patrimony. Investigators have said they believe the pieces were bound to be smuggled out of the country because they were found in packing cartons.
