TIMES-ADVOCATE, Escondido, Sunday, November 26, 1989 B5 Stanfords Alpha Delta Phi fraternity initiates 15 women By Jeff Gottlieb Knight Rtdder News Service Knight Ridder Newspapers STANFORD One more hairy-chested bastion of maleness has fallen at Stanford University. Like the sudden cracking of the Berlin Wall, the world has suddenly changed. Last week the Stanford chapter of Alpha Delta Phi became the first fraternity on campus to go coed when 15 women underwent the secret initiation rights and became members. It was like joining a cult," said Eliza David, a 19-year-old sophomore from Washington, D.C. The inclusion of women doesnt necessarily mean the rough edges have come off the fraternity.

The only thing I care about is if I can fart and burp in my own home, and I feel I can do that here, said Scott Pearson, the Alpha Delts house manager. Most of the female members were friends of the Alpha Delts already. I dont look at it as joining a fraternity, said Charity Kahn, 20, a junior from Beaver Dam, Wis. I look at it as solidifying nail polish matching your clothes, she said. She told her father this week she had become a frat member.

He sounded a little surprised. The Stanford chapter is not the first Alpha Delt chapter to go co-ed. Pearson said chapters at Bowdoin, Columbia, Brown and Wesleyan also have admitted women. At Stanford, 22 percent of undergraduates belong to 29 fraternities or sororities, said Michael Hughes, the universitys fraternal affairs adviser. The international that charters the Al pha Delts only accepts women as associate members.

What does fraternity mean? protested Kahn. Brotherhood. Well, brotherhood, sisterhood. The Alpha Delts had fallen on hard times recently, and that may have made them more willing to accept women. The fraternity just wasnt getting enough new members.

Despite integration, the initiation rights were unchanged. We didnt change things because of women, Pearson said. I dont look at it as joining a fraternity. I look at it as solidifying friendships with these people. Charity Kahn, a junior from Beaver Dam, Wis.

Tempelsman, 60, a balding, portly teddy bear of a man, has been active for more than three decades in Africa where he holds substantial financial interests. So broad and so close are his ties to top leaders in Africa that hes on a first-name basis with Archbishop Desmond Tutu, South Africas anti-apartheid activist; is called grand-pere by Gabons President El Hadj Omar Bongo; and entertains Zaire President Sese Seko Mobutu. Until recently, Tempelsman has preferred to remain behind the scenes. Although hes a multimillionaire, hes not listed in Whos Who and little has been written about him. But as an astute businessman, Tempelsman has cultivated contacts in Africa on all sides of the political spectrum.

He has his own network of contacts and moves swiftly, such as setting up an office in mineral-rich Namibia in advance of Novembers elections, a precursor to independence in the South Africa-run territory. Tempelsman has been criticized from the left because of his ties to DeBeers Consolidated Mines which mines diamonds from South Africa, among other places, and for once hiring the CIAs top Africa official when the man retired from the agency. The right recently questioned Tempelsmans dealings with Soviet-backed Angola. Tempelsman said he has a commercial relationship with that countrys National Diamond Co. The Angolan government is embroiled in civil war with U.S.

-backed rebels led by Jonas Savimbi. Howard Phillips of the Conservative Caucus, a lobbying group, has also suggested that Tempelsman may have had something to do with Angolas contract to sell oil to Citizens Diamond merchant Maurice Tempelsman is playing an increasingly public role in African-American relations. Tempelsman pooh-poohs these attacks as coming from a group of zealots who look at things from a conspiratorial point of view. In 1989, Tempelsman became the board chairman of the prestigious African-American Institute, the countrys oldest nonprofit organization dedicated to improving relations between the continents. Rep. Howard Wolpe, chairman of the House Africa subcommittee, said Tempelsman has frequently attended the panels hearings. Tempelsman, who generally favors economic sanctions against white-ruled South Africa, recently fought efforts to include uncut diamonds in the sanctions bill, Wolpe said.

With the help of his lawyer, Theodore Sorenson, former speech writer for the late President Kennedy, Tempelsman helped persuade Wolpe and others that diamond sanctions would hurt countries like Botswana more than South Africa because uncut diamonds are not identified by their country of A staunch Democrat, Tempelsman gives freely to the party as well as to its political candidates. Nevertheless, he praised Reagan administration officials for brokering a plan that led to elections in Namibia and an agreement to withdraw Cuban troops from Angola. Tempelsman is the chief executive officer of Lazare Kaplan International, a diamond-cutting concern, as well as a general partner in Leon Tempelsman and Son an investment company with interest in minerals, agriculture and industry. While Tempelsman has prospered in part because of Africas minerals, some countries have seen their standards of living decline and their people embroiled in endless civil wars. Tempelsman favors action from Washington to wipe out some of their debt as well as more aid, though Tempelsman said foreigners cant dictate to Africans how they should run their countries.

It has to come from their own internal processes, he said. We can hector and condemn, but in the end both the benefits and the fruit of political independence mean you have the right to make your own mistakes. CHRISTMAS PICKS AND BERRIES Commission recalls two toy products WASHINGTON (AP) More than 40,000 models of a classic American toy have been recalled because paint used on them may contain too much lead, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. The agency also says hundreds of thousands of clown dolls are being recalled because they pose a choking hazard.

The makers of Slinky animal pull toys, a variation on the standard accordion-like wired toy, are voluntarily recalling them because the red paint used on the eyes, tongue and cheeks may contain a higher percentage of lead paint than the agency allows. CPSC standards limit to .06 percent the lead content of paint used on childrens items. The 43,000 Slinky toys sold since 1986, have red and white pull cords and come in the form of a train, worm, seal, frog, caterpillar, dalmation and kitten. They are made by James Industries Inc. of Hollidaysburg, Pa.

The CPSC also said 234,000 dolls manufactured by the Omaha-based Oriental Trading Co. and sold through mail order catalogs as the Dress Up Clown or Funny Clown were recalled because they have small parts that present a choking risk to young children.
