TIMES ADVOCATE C4 FRIDAY, DECEMBER 9, 1994 Antonio Cartes Jobim, bossa nova composer, dies at 67 Jobim was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in New York in 1991. Bom in 1927, Jobim grew up in Ipanema, studying classical piano as a child and composing songs by age 14. He studied to be an architect but dropped out of college and played piano in Brazilian nightclubs. Jobim helped Bcore the French film Blade Orpheus," a worldwide hit that retold the Orpheus myth in the setting of Brazils Camaval. It won an Academy Award for best foreign film in 1959.

He then began collaborating with Joao Gilberto, who was inventing the samba-jazz mixture that came to be known as the bossa nova. Their first single, Chega de Saudade," or No More Blues, became a jazz standard. OBITUARY: Two weeks ago he released Antonio Brasileiro," his first record in seven years MIKE MOKRZYCKI AstociatedPrest NEW YORK Brazilian composer Antonio Carlos Job-im, whose blend of samba and jazz in The Girl From Ipanema and Desafinado helped spark the 1960s bossa nova craze, died Thursday. He was 67. Jobim died of heart failure at Mount Sinai Medical Center, hospital spokeswoman Leeza Peltz said.

Jobim, who lived in Rio de Janeiro and New York, entered the hospital Monday for treatment of blocked arteries, said Brigida Barros, an official at the Brazilian consulate in New York. Widely praised as one of the great pop composers of his time, Jobim (pronounced zho-BEEN) employed distinctive chromatic harmonies and lilting rhythms. I was a beach boy, and I believe I learned my songs from the birds of the Brazilian forest," he said in a 1991 interview with The Associated Press. Jobim also played piano and guitar and sang. Lately, he wrote more classical works.

Two weeks ago he released "Antonio Brasileiro," his first record in seven years, and also performed Fly Me to the Moon on Frank Sinatras new Duets record. Jobim was a national hero in Brazil, where he was known as Tom Jobim. He transcended borders, making our music heard all over the world," Brazils minister of culture, Luiz Roberto do Nascimen-to Silva, said Thursday, He was a creative genius who introduced a new rhythm, a new form of conceiving music and even a new form of playing pia no. The late tenor saxophonist Stan Getz made several of Job-ims Bongs famous in the 1960s, including The Girl From Ipa-nema" (with silky vocal by As-trud Gilberto) and Desafinado. Jobim and poet Vinicius de Moraes were inspired to write The Girl From Ipanema" in 1963 as they sat in a bar in Ipanema, a rustic beachfront district of Rio, and saw a beautiful 17-year-old girl walk by.

Norman Gimbel wrote the English lyrics. De Moraes later identified the girl as Helo Pinheiro, who now is a TV talk-show host in Sao Paolo, Brazil. In a radio interview Thursday in Sao Paolo, a sobbing Pinheiro said, He had a very important influence in my life. He composed Girl From Ipanema with a lot of love, with the romanticism of poets." Jobims other songs included One Note Samba," How Insensitive Sad," "Wave," Quiet Nights of Quiet Stars," Meditation," No More Blues and Dindi."
