By U.S. count, there are 217,000 refugees in the Saigon district.

U.S. officials said 510,000 refugees were left throughout the country by the Viet Cong attacks that opened Jan. 30. Allied agencies rushed medical teams to the embattled city of Hue 400 miles northeast of Saigon where 13 days of street fighting has made refugees of more than three-fourths of the city's 40,000 population. There has been no water or electric service since the fight.

The sources said there were Communist agitators among the more than 200,000 refugees that have moved into shelters in the Saigon area. They suggested the Viet Cong may be making a major attempt to turn the refugee masses against the Saigon government by alleging that the government has not protected them and is doing nothing for them. "We're vulnerable here if the Viet Cong are in the camps," said one official acquainted with ease. A U.S.

The South Vietnamese government has so far allotted only $5 million for its entire recovery program from the Viet Cong attacks. A note of reassurance: Mercedes-Benz mounts tires to the 250S that have been test-proved safe, even in continuous 100 mph cruising under maximum load at normal air pressures. And mounts them as standard equipment.

Is it big enough? Check the dimensions of the 250S and you may ask, is it big and roomy enoughas roomy as those sleek $6,700 rivals? The 250S is more compact than other cars in its class. Two feet shorter overall, for example. But so sane is its design, so shrewd the use of interior space, that it matches them for room in all vital respects. And as you'd expect, the 250S provides rich physical comfort. Seats are deeply contoured and plumply padded.

A built-in ventilation system lets you enjoy constantly replenished fresh air when all windows are shut. And as you'd also expect from Mercedes-Benz, the finish is superb. No 11vs or jagged edges. The resolution involving Vietnam definitely was a dovish plank and expressed opposition to the policy of the Johnson administration. feel we have the votes on the executive committee to pass a new resolution at our first meeting 60 days from now," Parker said. The executive committee is made up of officers of the state organization plus one member from each official club in the state, regardless of the number of members. At the closing session of the convention, former U.S.

Rep. Robert Duncan of Oregon surrised everyone by not making a single mention of Vietnam. Duncan, who has been termed a hawk and strongly supports Johnson's policy in Vietnam, is expected to run against Sen. Wayne Morse, an outspoken opponent of the Vietnam war. He then spoke on the freedoms enjoyed in the United States saying, "Nowhere in eastern Europe or in Red China could people say things which have been said in the United States for the last three years. But we can say them here." He urged the Young Democratsas well as all other Democratsto unite in an effort to bring victory in November. "We have an election with a troubled party, a party which criticizes its own members," he said. "We have gotten to the point where Democrats criticize Democrats and Republicans win elections. Accomplishments Cited "Let me remind you that in the State of the Union message in 1967, despite the feelings many of you and others have, President Johnson was able to cite more than any other president in history the accomplishments of his previous Congress and don't you ever forget it." He then admitted that since that time Johnson has hit the point "where he is not the most beloved president in history." In the $6,700 class, should you buy one of the all-new, all-different dreamboats? Or should you buy the almost unchanged Mercedes-Benz 250S? The dreamboats will do more for your ego.

But the 250S will do more for your driving, your pocketbookand your peace of mind. No new-car bugs The 250S has stayed unchanged since its 1965 debut. It's free of the "bugs" that can keep its all-new rivals shuttling back and forth to the shop for adjustments. And because Mercedes-Benz refuses to play the "planned obsolescence" game, you enjoy another relief: the knowledge that your 250S won't suddenly be shoved out of date, just when it's nicely broken in. Its looks are meant to stay modern for years.

Behind the ballyhoo Strangely enough, your 250S is fitted with more true engineering advances than any of those cars that boast of being "all new" every year. Perhaps it's not so strange at all. Most car makers are so busy dreaming up ways to make their products look new that they ignore fundamentals. "People can't see themso why bother making big technical improvements?" seems to be the attitude. Mercedes-Benz bothersbecause Mercedes-Benz believes a car should be an efficient machine, not fashion merchandise.

And devotes its engineering brains to perfecting that efficiency. The telling proof Drive the 250S after you've spent a few miles in one of its $6,700 rivals. It's the surest, most dramatic proof you can find of what technical superiority means in an automobile. Seek out the kind of potholed back road you'd try to avoid in ordinary cars. Don't spare the 250S: aim for the bumps and dips.

An amazing thing happens. You stay in your seat, the wheel stays in your hands, pill Merece has been fully trimmed. How nice, to own a car you can be proud of. From $25,785 to $4,284 You may be able to afford a Mercedes-Benz without knowing it. Note: Mercedes-Benz pioneered many important safety features, many years ago. Dual circuit brake lines, disc brakes and other items have been standard equipment for years, too. But work continues to make Mercedes-Benz cars even saferboth in avoiding trouble, and in protecting you if trouble should occur. Cradled in a rigid "unit" body that has been welded 10,000 times, studded with rubber cushions, studied with a stethoscope to find and kill the structural flaws that mean noise. Mercedes-Benz engineers think these advances mean more than all the styling frills on earth. Brakes that don't fade The 250S glides serenely over smooth roads, of course. In fact, an American writer in Germany reported, "There is as little inside noise at 100 mph as at a standstill." But say an emergency arises.
