One of the chief sources of loss of haby chicks comes from lack of proper brooding facilities, 'and a good brooder house will very nearly pay its cost in the first season. A brooder house is not a complicated structure. A simple shed type is common, but it must be built with a warm floor, tight, warm walls and a tight rocf.

The use of good heavy building paper on the inside walls will stop all possibility of cracks, and will make it easier to maintain an even temperature. Bear in mind that in cold weather 60 per cent of the heat of a building' Is lost through the roof. Therefore, use an extra If of build ing paper or one thicki heavy wallboard under the roof. TWO days after Gregory Mason landed in New York following his long engineering engagement in South Africa it occurred to him that before he went on home in Lhe West he would look up the very pretty girl he had, met a year before on his voyage to England. Gregory had taken down the address she gave him in. his pocket note book but it was not until he was off prospecting somewhere near the equator, with all his former ideas of life turned topsy turvy, that he began to think much about this charming girl With whom he had danced and played shuffle board on the Atlantic. So a year later, two days after he Gregory Mason found his way out to the suburban community where Madge Titus lived.

When he entered the softly lighted drawing room on that gray autumn afternoon it was Madge's thirty-year-old stepmother who came hurrying to him with outstretched hands as if she were greeting an old friend. Having explained her identity she drew her own low ottoman close beside him and proceeded to tell him about Madge. Madge was at a sanitarium where she had now spent three months. Madge had had a nervous breakdown or that was what the doctor called it and she and Madge's father had arranged to have her remain at the sanitarium until, she was quite her self again. "You see, Madge began to' be fearfully irritable," the stepmother told him.

"Goodness knows it wasn't my fault because I'd made up my mind to enjoy Madge's friends with her and get. away from the moss-grown idea that a girl just can't get on with her stepmother. And so I knew that there must be something really wrong with Madge. I got a psycho-analyst and a nerve specialist and told Madge precisely what I was doing and after several consultations and conferences we decided that Madge was in love. And finally she just got hysterical and told us all that site was in love, and that she was in love with a man named Gregory Mason whom site had met on her trip abroad and so when the maid just brought me your card well, you can imagine how thrilled I Gregory had listened to the comely stepmother who was talking by his side and felt when she had finished like pinching himself to find out whether he were really awake or just having a crazy dream.

VI cannot see for the life of me how she could be in love with me," said Gregory. she gave me no such impression." "That's just why she went to'pieces over it," explained the stepmother. "She should have told you frankly that she loved you. You could have explained that you felt no urge to marry iter and. there would have been an end of it.

Men don't have nervous breakdowns over disappointments in love because they do the proposing. They can accept defeat all at once and get over it. That is the way it should be with women. Now perhaps you can go to the sanitarium and see Madge and make it perfectly clear to her that you do not love her. It is hoping against hope that keeps her nerves shattered.

Of course, her father has plenty of money, still we can't keep her nt that expensive sanitarium It was eight; that evening when Gregory finally reached the' He told Madge that she was looking amazingly well. "I am, perfectly well," said Madge, laughing. "But I have no intentions of going back home. You see, that stepmother of; mine is too absurd for words. I simply couldn't endure her, and neither she nor father would listen to my requests to be to go to the city to work or study.

I simply had to get away so I steered them on to the Idea that I had nervous prostration. I knew they would send me here. Father can perfectly well afford it, and' I can ride and play tennis and. read and do a little painting and help a little" "Then you weren't suffering from a broken heart?" asked Gregory, and Madge colored a little. "Did that stepmother of, mine tell you about that?" she asked.

that was part of my game to get them to send me away. I hope at least that she didn't mention the name of the young man for whom I was pining. She couldn't have done that." "She did," said Gregory as he took Madge's hand in his and looked into tho face that he had visualized so often. "I knew you couldn't really love me, Because If you had you wouldn't have told them. But, Madge dear, I love you.

You can't stay fere forever come on with me. Maybe we could persuade the doctor to prescribe an elopement as part of your treatment" Two dnys later Madge's father and stepmother received a telegram from the sanitarium. "We were married nt noon. The doctor was best man. Letter following.

"Madge and Gregory Mason." The Last Fence "I can't sleep at night," began the man with a long tale of woe. "Well, that saves you from having bad dreams," snapped his intended tin, hurried on. i Female Barber of Los Angeles Is Jailed. 1 Los Angeles, Calif. A suaye, trou-ser-clad, white ui roned barber who discussed sports, politics, and business with customers In a straijhtforward masculine voice has revealed to the police that "he" is twenty-live-year-old Catherine Wing, male impersonator de luxe.

Detained In Jail in that city, Miss Wing explained how she came to pose as Kenneth Lisonbee and for months played the role of an industrious husband to her lifelong chum, stella Harper, nineteen. Catherine and Stella were reared In range country around Tintic, Utah. They rode the hills together in 'masculine 'attire astride cow ponies. Catherine became a woman barber in Utah but later decided to pose as a man and begin life anew. She purchased an assortment of men's clothing and went to Los Angeles.

There Catherine met a girl named Eileen Garnet. For several months Catherine courted Eileen just as a man would. Then when Catherine found Eileen had fallen in love with her, she explained that she was a girl. Eileen wept and told Catherine she had broken her heart. Eileen threatened to commit suicide, explaining she had planned to get away from relatives by marriage.

So Catherine married Eileen. Then the latter's mother discovered her daughter's "husband" was a girl. A 'family ended the strange marriage. Later Stella Harper joined Catherine in Los Angeles and Stella agreed to replace Miss Garnet In the role of wife. Miss Wing opened a barber shop of her own, still enjoying the ruse of playing the part of a husband.

A neighbor's suspicion led to the expose. Catherine and Stella were taken to jail. There they revealed their stories. Authorities do not expect to take action against the girls but will investigate Catherine's "marriage" to Miss Garnet before releasing her. Temple of Warriors Rebuilt in Jungle Washington.

The task of rebuilding the great ruin of the Temple of the Warriors in-the city of Chlchen Itza has at last been completed, as far as modern science can make the fallen stones stand again in their 'rightful places. This is the message which1 Earl Morris, in charge of the excavations at Chlchen Ttza for the Carnegie institution of Washington, has brought to the institution on his return from Yucatan. The Temple of the Warriors, reclaimed from the tropical jungle, stands' again on Is pyramid of four receding stone terraces. The stone altar, once used for human sacrifice, hits been restored.
