Prevention and control measures are more practical than treatment, and are usually matters of sanitation. In the case parasitic diseases such measures must be based on a knowledge of the habits and life histories of lie parasites involved and' on their mode of transmission from one animal to another. Yesterday was one beauty of a Spring day, and many people were in the open enjoying the sunshine, tury's work is permitting him to foretell with, increasing accuracy the results of hybridizing flowers whose ancestry is known for many generations. This, of course, is the careful application of Mendel' Law. Now, if Mendel's Law can be carried to the nth degree, it will seem that plant and animal breeders work with much greater accuracy than in the past and bring into the world species whose attributes cf character can be de- termined in advance.

Produces New Types IE Gregor Johan Mendel, Austrian monk and scientist who died in 1884, is some day awarded the supreme distinction of having paved the way for "race determination," another award will surely go to Mr. Kunderd for co-ordinating the work of scientists by his productions of new delightful types of gladioli. As the development of plant life corresponds so closely to that of animal life, and as the gladiolus is so adaptable for study because of its ease of propagation and widely varied color gradations, it is logical to think of Mr. Kunderd's accomplishments as anticipatory of race determination. WHY do seven generations of scholars sometimes produce in the eighth generation a male offspring who turns out to be a bank robber? Why do seven generations of fine, strong, white gladioli sometimes In the eighth generation produce a red flower Chicken or Egg First These two problems of heredity and environment are similar to the problems of creation which have always puzzled scientists.

They are nearer solution today, according to A. E. Kunderd, world famed grower of gladioli of Goshen, Indiana, than at any time in history. Mr. Kunderd is rounding out a half century of experimentation of hybridizing that queen of garden flowers, the gladiolus.

Today he will laughingly disclaim that he ever expects to prove, "Which came first the chicken or the egg?" Nor can you commit him definitely on, "Which Is stronger heredity or environment?" He will also deny that he is on the eve of any great discovery in the field of evolution. The horticulturist feels Btrongly, however that his accumulated knowledge of nearly half a cen the finest athletes that ever donned a Brown and Gold uniform, participating his' second year of varsity play; the lanky Simms, who capably performed a guard and a center berth; also Berman and Geeseman, two faithful subs, will be playing their final home game. Growing of Asparagus Not Difficult Task The growing of asparagus is not difficult.

Its chief requirement is plant food with water. Make a bed of any required size, forking in well rotted manure to make a deep, rich soil. Set one or two-year-old roots IS inches apart in the row, with rows 2 feet apart, 100 roots for a bed L'O by 20 feet, in size. Set rows well down and fill in later, giving opportunity lightly to till the surface 'without disturbing crowns. Some prefer to sow seed, thinning out later, but the common method of establishing an asparagus bed is by the use of roots, one year old.

The secret of a good asparagus bed, long exposed, is a soil kept rich and not to prolonged cutting in the summer. It is so easily raised that few seem to think it worth while. Quick growing, large tips will not be 1 cut from a starved bed, however. Pineapple Pear Quite Resistant to Blight A really blight-proof pear has yet to he found. There are Varieties that are more resistant to blight than others, but the pear that will not at one time or another be affected by blight has not yet been produced. It is true, however, that the Pineapple pear is strongly resistant to blight, so that it can be grown in localities where better sorts cannot he grown. It is at best a poor quality product for eating out of hand? though when canned it is considered satisfactory. Undoubtedly the Pineappie pear is either a pure oriental pear belonging to the same group as the more familiar "Sand Penr," or else it is a hybrid between the oriental pear and the European pear as represented hy Oar-ber, LeConte, and KietTer.

Where better sorts can be grown it has no place.
