Saying he did not want to face drawn-out contract negotiations similar to those the team had with running back Gary Anderson, Chargers coach Dan Henning announced today that the team was releasing the controversial quarterback. I didnt see it getting worked out, Henning said of McMahons contract. And I didnt think it was fair to the coaches or the players.

I wanted to clear the decks and let everybody know in the organization that the focal point will be on four players for the quarterback job. At the conclusion of last season, Henning went on the record saying he wanted McMahon signed before the draft. He emphasized that the contract should be weighed heavily toward performance incentives. But as negotiations with McMahon continued this spring, it was apparent McMahon would not accept such a contract. I told Bobby (Beathard, the Chargers general manager) that I thought we could get this worked out, said Henning.

He said I was dreaming. When McMahon hadnt signed by draft day last Sunday, it was Henning, not Beathard, who decided to drop the veteran quar-I Please see MCMAHON, D2 Americas Cup awarded to San Diego by court 8 Charles Barkley, right, Mark Aguire may be clashing again. as well as defending champion Detroit toying with Indiana, and youve already got a full night on your hands. The question of whether particular conduct is sporting or fair in the context of a particular sporting event is wholly distinct from the question of whether it is legal, wrote Alexander.

Questions of sportsmanship and fairness with respect to sporting contestes depend largely upon the rules of the particular sport and the expertise of those knowledgeable in that sport, Alexander wrote. Based on the Americas Cup rules established more than a century ago, San Diegos deci- sion to race a catamaran was legal, Alexander said. There was no immediate re- sponse to the decision from either side. San Diego Yacht Club officials scheduled a news con- ference for later today. The catamaran Stars and Stripes, captained by Dennis Conner, easily defeated Mercury Bays yacht New Zealand in two match races in the Pacific Ocean just off San Diego.

YACHT RACING The New York Court of Appeals, the final arbiter of cup disputes, rules in favor of Dennis Conner The Associated Press The Americas Cup, yacht racings most coveted prize, was awarded today to the San Diego Yacht Club by New Yorks top court. The 5-2 ruling by New Yorks Court of Appeals apparently ends a legal battle for the 139-year-old silver trophy that centered on the type of craft used in the 1988 race. According to the Americas Cup Deed of Trust, the New York Court of Appeals is the final arbiter of cup disputes. San Diego Yacht Club, sailing a catamaran, trounced the huge monohull from New Zealands Mercury Bay Club in September 1988. The Court of Appeals, in a 53-page decision, said the rules governing the Americas Cup competition clearly allowed San Diego to use the catamaran.

Judge Fritz Alexander writing for cow, Idaho, huge crowds of kids gathered outside the Vandals locker room after games to wait for Frieszs autograph. In his hometown of Couer dAlene, the local paper produced a special section to salute his all-American selection. The same day, about 500 of his closest friends held a dinner in his honor. Friesz realized he was an object of great interest when rumors circulated about him shopping at the mall with a certain girl. And I wasnt even at the mall, he says, feigning disgust.

It doesnt help that Friesz has teen idol looks, with neatly trimmed dark hair and straight, white teeth. Im kind of dreading going back there now, Friesz said of his hometown after arriving in San Diego. Its going to be twice as bad. Its kind of sad because I would like to live there, but I couldnt handle everybody knowing who I was. Its the price Friesz pays for being the favorite son of Coeur dAlene, a picturesque resort and mining town, half the size of Escondido and 100 miles south of the Canadian border.

He brought this all on himself, of course. People Please see FRIESZ, D2 Chargers draft pick escapes spotlight by joining pro football TOP LEONARDTimes Advocate Now that quarterback John Friesz has been drafted by the Chargers, maybe he can get away from it all. Escape from the crowds of autograph hounds, the television cameras, the sportswriters, the rumors about his personal life. Maybe he can get away from the day-to-day grind, the hustle and bustle of Coeur dAlene, Idaho. Thats right.

Most players are just beginning to get a taste of the limelight once theyre drafted by an NFL team. But for Friesz, moving to the sixth-largest city in America will provide for some long overdue anonymity. In the last three years, Friesz (pronounced FREEZE) has been about as close as the Potato State gets to a bona fide celebrity. It was a soothing feeling for the San Diego Padres righthander Wednesday night when he blanked the Chicago Cubs 3-0 for his second straight complete game in 100 pitches or less.

I used to get the ball and just throw it as hard as I could, said Whitson, who logged his 10th career shutout. When I would forget about location and pitch selection, I would get hurt. Now I take a deep breath and work for a ground ball. On the heels of last season, when he had a career best with 16 victories and a 2.66 earned run average, Whitson has won both of his decisions this year with a 1.50 ERA. This success, Whitson says, dates to his departure from New York, where Yankee fans booed him so intently that he would no longer pitch at home. He left via a mid-season trade in 1986 for his second stint in San Diego. Ive learned more in the last three or more years how to pitch, said Whitson, who went 5-2 with a 7.54 ERA in his last season with the Yankees.
