Smith, the army corporal from Pasadena, who is the pre-Wimbledon favorite, seemed to dislike the chill wind that whipped over the Queens Club and had to rally for a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory over Ray Keldie of Australia. Miss Evert, the 17-year-old whiz from Fort Lauderdale who was the star of the recent Wightmau Cup victory over Britain, trounced Jackie Fayter of Britain in a third-round match 6-4, 6-1. Four Americans Miss Evert was joined in the quarter-finals by Valerie Zie genfuss of San Diego. Pam Teegaurden of Los Angeles and Wendy Overton of Washington, D.C. The score was 4-6, 9-8, 6-4. Chilling Weather The crowd, wearing scarves and overcoats to protect themselves against the chilling temperatures, stood around ait outer court to watch Miss Evert perform one of her backcourt miracles.

She hardly made a mistake in brushing her British rival aside. Smith, bundled in a thick sweater, misjudged overheads in the opening set and had considerable trouble with the spinning service of the bearded Australian. Keldie won four games in a row at one stage in the opening set. Smiths service improved along with his confidence in the second set and he won both deciding sets with a service ace.
