The first round of the 72-hole tourney will be Thursday at the compact, Tripoli Golf Club, where young Texan Dave Eichelberger scored his first pro victory last year with a 14 under par total of 270. Eichelberger is back, as are 1970 winner Deane Beman and 1969 winner Ken Still.

Dave Stockton, champion of the first GMO in 1968, is not among the 147-man field. Par is expected to take a beating again. Former U.S. and British Amateur champion Bob Dickson shaved six strokes off par Monday in qualifying players. Last year, the field of 146 broke par 195 times in 435 rounds.

It took a 36-hole total of one-under-par 141 to make the cut. The $125,000 GMO is in conflict with the more prestigious British Open for the fourth time in five years, and some of the top names on the tour, headed by Jack Nicklaus, Lee Trevino and Arnold Palmer, are playing in Muirfield, Scotland. Also missing is Western Open winner Jim Jamieson, who withdrew because of a back aliment. However, the GMO received a boost last weekend when one of its entrants, veteran Gay Brewer, won the Canadian Open. Also entered are Australians Bob Shaw, who tied for second last year, and Bruce Cramp-ton, who placed second in this years Masters and U.S.

Open Crampton, who finished two strokes behind Eichelberger last year, won the old Milwaukee Open in 1961. ab bl ab bl 4 2 2 2 MAultff 2b 2 0 4 12 0 TTaylor 2b 1 4 13 1 ARodrgez 3b 4 5 0 10 NorthruD rf 4 0 2 1 Freehan Bonds rf Maddox cf Soeier ss McCovev 1b Goodson 1b 5 111 4 2 2 0 3 0 12 3 111 10 0 0 Milner If Grote Fregosl 3b Dyer Sudakls 1b Martinez rf WGarrett 2b 4 0 1 Koosman 2 0 0 Marshall ph 10 0 0 Sadeeki 0 0 0 Total 31 1 2 0 0 0 0 3 0 0 0 4 0 0 0 3 0 0 0 3 0 0 0 4 110 Kingman 3b 4 0 0 0 Rader 3 0 0 0 Fuentes 2b 4 0 0 0 Hendersn If 4 0 10 Bryant 2 2 0 0 DNelson 3b Harrah ss Mincher 1b Billlnqs If King Biltfner rf Lindblad DJones ph Shellenbk Pina Lovltto cf Maddox cf Randle 2b Broberq Ford rf Total nl I Cash 1b 3 0 11 6 6 WHorton If 4 0 1) 1 0 0 0 Comar If 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 0 MStanley cf 4 111 0 0 0 0 Brnkman ss 4 13 0 2 0 10 Tlmermn 0 0 0 0 1 0 0 0 Schermn 2 0 0 0 3 110 Seelbach 10 01) 10 0 0 -Uf 13 5 Total 31 i IT Total 33 6 6 4 San Francisco 01 2 000 300i Nw York 000 010 0001 D--JBonds, JDver, Kfnqman. General REYKJAVIK, Iceland (AP) With a hopeless position on the chess board, Bobby Fischer walked out for 30 minutes Wednesday, then returned to lose the first garpe of the world chess championship to Boris Spassky, the Russian title-holder. After the game was over Fis cher told the man who taught him the moves of the game when he was a boy in Brooklyn, N.Y., that it will settle down.

It was a bad day all around for the 29-year-old American. In addition to conceding Spassky a 1-0 lead in the score at the outset of the 24-game match, Fischer developed some more money trouble. News from London was that James Slater, who sweetened the pot with 50,000 pounds about $120,000 wouldnt be able to get his money out of England because of currency restrictions. Not Talking Slaters donation, which pushed the total prize money to $300,000, enticed Fischer to end his holdout at the scheduled start of the match July 2. Asked about Slaters problem, Fischer snapped, No comment.

The play lasted only one hour and three minutes. It was the continuation of a game begun Tuesday and adjourned after 40 moves with Fischer in a position the experts said would give him only a draw at best. Spassky had his king, a bishop that controlled the black diagonals and three pawns. Fischer was down to his king and five pawns, two of them loose on the kings side. One of Spassky's pawns threatened a Fischer pawn when play concluded Tuesday night.

Pawn Captured In the first move Wednesday, Spassky captured the pawn. Fischer recaptured with his king and the game turned into an effort by Fischer to push his pawns a square at a time to the last rank under the escort of his king. Suddenly after five minutes of play and some indecisive sparring, Fischer stood, spoke animatedly to chief referee Lothar Schmid of West Germany and disappeared with his long rolling gait through the beige curtains offstage left. Fischer strode to his back-stage dressing room where he told Schmid, who followed him, that he wouldnt continue play unless a movie camera 150 feet from the chess board was ordered shut off. It was barely visible from where Fischer sat.

Schmid said he couldnt order the camera removed. Fischer stayed away for 30 minutes while his clock continued to devour time. He returned to continue the struggle, making his 44th move, an ineffectual sidestep with his king. 5fith Move In ensuing play all the pawns on the kings side were lost. Fischer shifted his king in a hopeless struggle to the other side of the board, where two of his pawns and two of Spasskys blocked each others passage, Fischer couldn't unblock because Spasskys bishop could protect his position from long range.

Finally, after Spasskys 56th move his king approached the jam on the queens side Fischer resigned. He reached over and stopped his clock. He offered Spassky his hand, folded his scorecard and walked out pausing once to wave to the audience, which was applauding the Russian. Fischer left the hall by the stage door whitefaced and hurried to a waiting car. From the car he spotted John Collins, a paraplegic sitting a few feet away in a wheel chair.

Collins taught Fischer the game. Fischer rolled down the car window and said, Im sorry. It will settle down. He left immediately for his air conditioned hotel suite. Fred Cramer, a U.S.

Chess Federation official who sometimes speaks for Fischer, said the American would take some strenuous physical exercise Wednesday night to get in shape for his second game with Spassky on Thursday. SpaaikV Fischer Spaasky Fischer 1. P04 Kt KB3 S. K3 00 2. QB4 K3 6.
