Last month, major league baseball told teams they must order bats without any manufacturers identification. Baseball said the logos had gotten too big, in particular the gigantic Louisville Slugger" label on Rickey Hendersons bat in the postseason. The batmakers complained, saying trademarks were important to their business. Besides, they said, ithout labels the players might hold the bats upside down and break more of them. On Sunday, at the baseball winter meetings, the two sides compromised sort of.

Sweeping up snow is a hot subject oped in 1982 when a snow plow operator cleared an area where John Smith of the New England PITTSBURGH Houston Oilers Coach Jerry Glanville registered his protests about Three Rivers Stadium groundskeeping policies during his teams 23-16 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. Snow fell steadily through most of the Sunday's game but much of the field as cleared during halftime. In the second half, a tractor equipped with a sweeper cleaned the sidelines and goal line and also took a run across the Steelers 35-vard line, here Pittsburgh was lined up to kick off. Im getting so tired of being close. That doesnt mean anything in this league. This was a game the Chargers were favored to win. With rookie Billy Joe Tolliver making his second NFL start, and his first at Jack Murphy Stadium, the Chargers were hopeful they could take advantage of the leagues worst defensive unit. But for the ninth consecutive game, the Chargers failed to score more than 20 points.

For most of the afternoon Tolliver and the Chargers struggled to move the ball. The Chargers had just 258 net yards to 249 for the Jets. The only points the Chargers managed through three quarters came on a brilliant 40-yard run by rookie running back Marion Butts, in which he broke seven tackles, and Bahrs field goal. I cant see any good points in my performance, said Tolliver, who finished 24 of 51 for 230 yards, one touchdown, two interceptions and was sacked Five times. I was mediocre at best.

The interceptions were both crucial, especially the second one. The Jets had gone ahead 14-10 on Roger Vicks one-yard touchdown with more than nine minutes left in the fourth quarter. An illegal use of hands call against Roy Bennett pushed the Chargers back to their 9-yard line on the kickoff. After two incompletions, Tolliver made a grave mistake. The rookie threw a long, hanging pass into double coverage, trying to hit speedy wide receiver Anthony Miller.

Jet safety Erik McMillan easily made the interception at the New York 44 and returned it 40 yards to the Chargers 16. Two plays later, Vick scored on a 14-yard run for a 20-10 lead. I made probably the stupidest play of the year when they had the pick that led to six points, said Tolliver, who was booed heavily when he ran onto the field for the next possession. Thats a play any high school kid knows not to make. Yes, he did (tip off his passes), said McMillan.

The defense helped out twice in the fourth quarter. First, defensive back Lester Lyles stripped Vick of the football, which was recovered by linebacker Leslie ONeal at the Jets 49. After completions of 13 yards to Miller and 21 yards to Jamie Holland, Tolliver hit Miller with the scoring pass two plays later.

The defense then held New York on three plays and the Chargers offense took over with two minutes left at their 44-yard line. Tolliver played like a seasoned veteran as he completed five straight passes in the hurry-up offense. With the ball at the Jets 19, however, the drive stalled, setting up Bahrs potential game-tying Field goal. When the kick went awry, the Chargers had another loss that was tough to explain. Wed better turn this thing around and do it quick, said Charger safety Vencie Glenn.

The rookie misFired on a slant route to Miller, who had beaten the defender. Instead, Tolliver threw the ball more to the outside, where corner-back James Hasty made the interception at the Jets 3. But overall, Tollivers performance the second time out was better than his debut in Seattle when he was 6-for-17 for 41 yards and one interception. However, he still had many problems.

In the First half, Tolliver was only 10 of 22. Roller-coaster like, said Chargers Coach Dan Henning in describing Tollivers play. Played poorly in the first half. Got better in the second half when he seemed to make progress in the end. By games end, Tolliver seemed to be gaining confidence.

The Jets had to travel just 16 yards, with Vick scoring on a 14 -yard run. We expected them to run the quick pitch outside a lot. said Charger linebacker Leslie ONeal. But we didnt expect them to trap the way they did. They trapped up the middle quite a bit today, and they found the creases and got some big plays.

The Jets, who managed just 249 yards, ran the ball at will as they gained 181 yards. Johnny Hector led with 106 yards on 20 carries, the first 100-yard day by a Jets back this season. Hector also had a 9-yard touchdowm pass from Ken OBrien in the first quarter. Vick added 76 yards on 16 carries. Butts makes his mark: Rookie running back Marion Butts turned in the run of the season for the Chargers Sunday against the Jets.

Butts scored on a spectacular 40-yard run in the second quarter, in which he broke seven tackles, shook off defenders and carried a tackier with him into the end zone. That was a heck of a run, said Chargers Coach Dan Henning. It was as good of a run as I have seen all year, anywhere, anyplace. A good block broke him into the secondary', and after that, it was all him. Said Butts: Lately, defensive backs have been hitting me in the knees.

The punt caught a jet stream, and it landed on the Giants 38. Return man Dave Meg-gett then made a fatal error by letting the ball bounce another 30 yards, before picking it up for a 9-yard return. Thats the longest punt I ever had, even without the bounce, Cunningham said. I practiced punting this week. I thought I might get a chance.

Just like Saturday night. Defense still falling short late in games By Kevin Scattareggia Times Advocaie Soortswntef SAN DIEGO The Chargers would be nothing without their defense. Ranked eighth in the NFL coming into the game, defense is the reason the Chargers have remained competitive in eight of the teams nine losses. But still, there is the problem of letdowns late in games that continues to haunt the defense. It happened again Sunday when the Chargers allowed the New York Jets to score two fourth-quarter touchdowns for a 20-17 win.

Of the 24 touchdowns the defense has allowed, nine (37.5 percent) have come in the final quarter. You can say what you want about the offense, but when it counts, the defense isnt getting the job done, said comerback Gill Byrd, who picked off his sixth pass of the season. We dont have that killer instinct, Byrd added. The offense puts enough points on the board to give us the lead, and thats the time for us to close the door. But we dont put them away.

We can win a ballgame, but once our offense gets the lead, we let the other team move the ball right down the field.
