Dodd as Dim Chargers seeking to sign McMahon, Anderson to pacts By Kevin Scattareggia Times-Advocate Sportswnter SAN DIEGO One sat out the entire season; the other played but was unproductive. Yet despite the results of the 1989 season, the Chargers appear to be positioning themselves to bring back running back Gary Anderson and quarterback Jim McMahon next season. Chargers General Manager Bobby Beathard has already made overtures to the agents for each player, and will be meeting with both soon. Those are two situations that we need to resolve, said Beathard. They each have their place, in terms of priorities, but we need to address them.

McMahon becomes an unrestricted free agent Thursday when his contract expires. Beathard has expressed interest in talking to McMahon and his agent about a new contract. But first, the Chargers new GM wants to quell any doubts about McMahons possible role with the club. After rookie Billy Joe Tolliver started five games last season, including the final four, there were questions about McMahons ability to handle a backup role. Thats one question Beathard would like to have answered before tendering a contract offer.

I want Jim and Billy Joe to come in here with the idea that each is going to be the No. 1 quarterback, Beathard said. But in case hes (McMahon) not, I want to find out what his attitude would be about that. Steve Zucker, McMahons Chicago-based representative, said: Jim McMahon can play starter or backup. He has a tremendous relationship with Tolliver.

San Diego is a terrific situation for Jim. When the Chargers announce their 37-man protected roster Thursday under the NFLs Plan free agency, McMahon will be among those on the list, Beathard said. If the Chargers did not protect McMahon, he would be free to sign with any team without compensation to the club. Despite being benched in favor of Tolliver, McMahon wants to return to the Chargers next season, Zucker said. He absolutely plans on returning to the Chargers, the agent said.

He enjoys playing in San Diego and wants to come back. But do the Chargers want him back? It may depend largely on how much it takes to sign McMahon. Chargers Coach Dan Henning said the week after the season that Please see Chargers, page D3 the Bronco helmet came unplugged en route, and as the Denver players ran out, they were greeted by what appeared to be an enormous blue and orange souffle. The Aztecs climbed to 4-4 in WAC play and 12-8 overall. The win allowed San Diego State to match its win production from each of the last two seasons.

The Cowboys tumbled to 3-5, 11-9. This was a must game for us," said San Diego State Coach Jim Brandenburg, who coached Wyoming from 1978-87, winning three WAC championships. Im very proud of my players. We were not very sharp offensively, but we did things defensively that really bothered them. In 2xh years with the Aztecs, Brandenburg is now 2-4 against his former school.

Earlier this season, the Cowboys beat the Aztecs 76-60 in Laramie when the Aztecs crumbled at the free throw line, hitting just 17 of 36 attempts (47 percent). San Diego State, which entered Mondays game as the worst free-throw shooting team in the conference (61 percent), was sent to the line 37 times. Most of those chances came late in the game as Wyoming desperately attempted to erase the Aztec lead by forcing them to shoot one-and-one from the foul line. They whacked us on every pass, said Brandenburg. The way weve been shooting free throws, that was good strategy, said Dow.

But we put em down when we had to." The Aztecs made 24 free throws, including clutch shots in the final minute by Arthur Massey and Michael Hudson. Jamison, who is leading the Aztecs in scoring but bagging only 44 percent from the line, was the man every Cowboy wanted to foul. However. Jamison shook the past by hitting 7-of-ll, including seven of his final eight chances. A fast break, an errant pass, an out-of-control collision it happened so fast. Suddenly, Wyomings Rick Henry was down, his body involuntarily twitching, his breathing loud and erratic. The Sports Arena crowd turned silent. Seconds before, Henry tripped while running at full speed. He slid in front of Jamison, causing the 6-foot-8, 235-pound Aztec forward to lose his balance.

The Wyoming guard was face up when Jamison came crashing down, his full force hitting Henrys neck and head. Henry, a sophomore from Louisville, was unconscious. His eyes were rolling back in his head, said Jamison. I'd never seen anything like it. I was scared.

It looked like he was having a seizure. I thought he was paralyzed." Henry lay face down to the floor for 15 minutes Monday night during the Aztecs 68-59 victory over the Cowboys. Doctors and trainers, fearful of a neck or back injury, would not move him. When he finally regained consciousness, he had no feeling in his neck. The way he reacted, I thought the worst, said Aztec center Marty Dow.

It looked really bad. Henry was carefully moved by stretcher and transported to Mercy Hospital for oer-night observation of possible neck injuries and concussion. By the time Henry arrived at the hospital, he was able to move his arms and legs. This morning, Henry was reported in good condition, according to a hospital spokeswoman. He's OK.

He has no problems." Henrys teammates were shaken by the injury, allowing a close game to slip away once play resumed. We didn't know what was going on," Wyoming forward Reggie Slater said. Pitcher Mark Grant, who has a The Associated Press The Times Advocate SAN DIEGO The San Diego Padres trimmed their arbitration list to three on Monday by signing Mike Pagliarulo to a one-year contact at the same pay he received in 1989.

The Padres had wanted Pagliarulo to take a cut in pay after a sub-par season. But he could actually end up with a raise if he has a good season. Pagliarulo and the Padres settled at $575,000, the same as last season, but he can earn $90,000 more in performance bonuses. Pagliarulo, 29, was traded by the New York Yankees to San Diego in mid-season last year. He batted .197 with four homers and 16 RBI for New York and .196 with three homers and 14 RBI for San Diego.

Pagliarulo was asking for a $645,000 salary. The Padres arbitration offer was $550,000. The former Yankee may have a hard time meeting any incentive clauses because he first must earn a starting job. Bip Roberts is expected to battle Pagliarulo for first-string third base job- The Padres still have three contract negotiations pending that may end up in arbitration. Pitcher Calvin Schiraldi will have his arbitration hearing on Feb.

As far as the talent of this football team and rememberance of those Steeler teams, its a question that will not be answered, Seifert said. Those are great teams, the greatest of teams at that particular time.

This just happens to be our term. Of the greatest teams of the past three decades, the 49ers are younger than the last great Steelers and last great Packers teams. The 49ers went through the playoffs with a roster of 47, whose average age was 26.7. During Super Bowl week, however, they added 30-year-old running back Harry Sydney to help the special teams. That increased the average age to 26.8, same as the Dolphins after their third consecutive trip to the Super Bowl.

Yep, there might be another Super Bowl left in these lads from San Francisco. Quarterback Joe Montana has only one wish. That we could take our same team and come back to play next year, Montana said. Change is inevitable. Too much change is deadly.

Super Bowl XV may By John Clayton McClatchy News Service NEW ORLEANS The debates started by halftime of Super Bowl XXIV. Are the San Francisco 49ers the greatest team in National Football League history, better than the Pittsburgh Steelers and Miami Dolphins of the 1970s or the Green Bay Packers of the 1960s? Winning an unprecedented fifth Super Bowl ring next January in Tampa could end the debate. Until then, though, no one can say for certain which is the best team. Thats really for fellows such as yourself to evaluate, Coach George Seifert told writers said after his 49ers staked their claim with a 55-10 victory Sunday over the Denver Broncos that secured their fourth Super Bowl championship. Its certainly one of the best teams of all time.

We felt as though our 1984 team was a great team as well. Im also well aware of the fact theres been some great football teams through the history of the league. Seifert only went as far as to say the 49ers would match up quite ered with $310,000. Catcher Benito Sant has his hearing on Feb. ing for a raise from $3 $1.25 million.
