TIMES ADVOCATE WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 3 1,1990 All TRIAL: Broderick testifies about abuse BASEBALL: Little League lawsuit The Associated Press An Unocal refinery in LA tank sports a seasonal smile. SEASON: Its rooted in the irrational ple were elected during the first two tries. Hank Santay is president-eitet of the 1991 board but has not been allowed to take his seat this fall as scheduled. He views the suit against the 1989 board as a vendetta being carried out by the 1990 board because some chil dren of 1990 board members were not chosen for the All-Star team. Because of that, there was a campaign to discredit a couple of people on the '89 board.

Moreover, he said, 1990 board members are protesting the seating of the new board to give themselves more time to carry out the lawsuit against the old board. The longer it goes, the better chance there wont be a 1991 baseball season, Santay said. Yeah, maybe she (Farmer) did some dumb things. She bought the most expensive hot dogs she could buy. But there was no corruption.

None at all. Santay also protested the 1990 boards use of the operating funds for legal costs. Theyre gung-ho as long as theyre spending kids money, Santay said. Doggone it, everyones forgetting its a kids game and its for the doggone kids. Its a shame.

Its a real shame. Current board president Bill Robards acknowledged that the operating fund, which is collected in part from childrens fund-raising projects, is being used to pay legal fees. But he said the money would be recovered from the law suit. He also denied that the suit is being filed as a vendetta. Its not simply sour grapes and not as frivolous as somebodys kids not getting on the All-Star team.

Were talking about people ripping off the Little League, Robards said. Continental Little League is one of three Little League groups in Escondido. Its games are played in Kit Carson Park. Continued from A1 the previous years. The suit also charges that Farmer skewed her reports to hide unexplained expenditures and repeatedly bought personal groceries at Price Club and Smart and Final Iris stores with Little League money.

Curran says he has receipts and other evidence, collected with the help of an Escondido Police Department detective, that prove the improper purchases were made. Farmer declined to comment, but her lawyer, Matthew Herron, said: This is absolutely outrageous. The allegations are just not true. You can go through the books and records and tell that its not true. These ladies are not businesswomen, but they handled it the best that they could.

Herron said he hopes to get the case into court as soon as possible to clear the defendants names. These people are very nice folks and theyre very hurt by this, he said. The suit also alleges that Farmer overpaid Bucksters Sporting Goods, which recently went out of business, by $2,100 and then manipulated the books to hide the overpayment. Curran said in an interview that he will try to prove the money was tunneled through the store and back to Farmer. Also named in the suit are equipment manager Dave Farmer, Pam Farmers husband, snack-bar coordinator Jane Lake and president Tom Klein, all members of the 1989 board.

In a separate dispute, the 1990 board is also refusing to step down to make way for the incoming 1991 board, charging that ballot box -stuffing marred the first election and improper election procedures invalidated the second one. A third election is being planned, although the same peo Continued from A I icks defense attorney. Earley has said Betty Broderick was driven to commit the shootings by her husbands abuse of her verbally and through the court system. The prosecution contends, however, that the La Jolla socialite killed her ex-husband and his new wife out of hatred and revenge. Betty Broderick took the stand Tuesday in her own defense.

She has been testifying in exhausting detail about the unraveling of her marriage. She said Tuesday that 1982 should have been a time to rejoice. After years of struggling, we didnt have to worry (about money) any more, she told a packed courtroom. But as Daniel Brodericks legal practice was blossoming, his desire for his wife began to wither, Betty Broderick testified. Daniel Broderick told her exactly what he thought as the couple drove to an out-of-town wedding.

"He started right in telling me he just wasnt happy. He just wanted to throw in the towel. Daniel Broderick told her she was old, fat. boring and stupid, Betty Broderick said. Betty Brodericks testimony raised the already high interest in the case.

At mid-morning Tuesday nearly 50 people waited in line for the 10 seats reserved for spectators. Family members and reporters filled the rest of the court rooms 06 seats. Betty Broderick's calm matter-of-fact demeanor, occasionally interrupted by tears, contrasted with her tone on a pair of tape recordings that was played for the jury earlier in the trial. On the tapes, one of which was a collection of phone messages left on Daniel Brodericks answering machine. Betty Broderick blasted the couple with profanity.

sexual slurs and threats. Under questioning bv her attorney. Betty Broderick said her marriage turned sour in 1983 when Daniel Broderick hired Linda Kolkena to work in his office. "When I found out it was her, 1 just couldnt believe it. she said.

Betty Broderick believed that Linda had no legal or medical ex perience, couldn't tvpe and hadn't finished high school. In response to her husband's changing desires, Betty Broderick said she tried to improve herself by dieting, fixing her teeth and changing her hairstyle. 1 tried to be perfect. Absolutely flawlessly perfect for Dan Broderick." Betty Broderick said her husband continued to deny that he was having an affair with Linda Kolkena, even after he left his wife in 1985. It was always the same story that I was crazy and she was just the most innocent young girl.

Betty Broderick said her unhappiness even reached the point of a suicide attempt on her 36th birthday. When the kids went to bed I slit my wrist and swallowed every pill 1 could find in the house, she said, breaking into tears. Dan found her the next morning and cried. It was October of 1985 when he finally admitted his relationship with Linda. Betty Broderick testified that immediately after the confession Daniel Broderick wanted to take her to a mental hospital and commit her.

He kept telling me that I was sick, that 1 needed help, that I was crazy. It made me feel sick. Betty Broderick also said she found a note in her husbands handwriting that made her believe he wanted to serve her divorce papers at a fancy luncheon in front of her friends. She said that the plan seemed credible to her because Daniel Broderick's past tactics. She recalled that he had once served a lawsuit on a doctor on Christmas Eve in the front row of the doctor's church.

Dan thought that was pretty funny and a way to get someone to his knees pretty quick. During her testimony Betty Broderick also detailed violent acts that she took against her husband. Those acts included smearing a Boston cream pie on his bed and driving her Chevy Suburban into the front door of his house. She also related that she had great difficulty finding a lawyer to represent her in the divorce case. All you have to do is read the political pages, and it looks like its getting worse.

Although irrational, there is no 13th Street in Santa Monica or Long Beach, and the Westin Bon-aventure and New Otani hotels, like many across the country, dont have a 13th floor. Many items in the UCLA collection deal with the coveted automobile. Myths abound: If you make a wish as two Volkswagens are crossing at an intersection, it will come true. You can hit all green lights during a drive if you put a cigarette in your mouth and say you will light it at the first red light. The collection is also awash in surfing lore: The person who can flip a bottle cap farthest is the best surfer.

Paddling out and barking like a dog guarantees gnarly waves. Other superstitions? Red cars get more traffic tickets, airplane crashes and celebrity deaths occur in threes, its bad luck to look back while boarding a plane, its good luck to buy lottery tickets from a hunchback. Continued from A 1 Superstitions are very normal, Brothers said Thursday. These superstitions are security blankets for adults. They are hand-me-downs from families, and our ancestors as well.

It gives us ties to our ancestors. Brothers said they are harmless unless they start to control someone. Some people wont get out of bed on Friday the 13th, for example, she said. The more control we have, the less superstition. In baseball, for example, infielders are more superstitious than outfielders, who have more time to get to the ball.

As co-author of the upcoming "Encyclopedia of American Popular Beliefs and Superstitions with Donald Ward, Cattermole-Tally has files with more than a million index cards about the topic. Why do these aged superstitions survive in an era of space travel, skepticism and enlightenment? Most people dont think very logically, said Cattermole-Tally.
