JEFF POMINOUESTimes Advocate The Gulls are trying to fly a little higher on the air this season, having multiplied their visibility by switching radio stations and putting 15 home games on live television. ON THE air TToDDSw Staff and ire reports CHICAGO Bruce Hursts quest for a 20-win season took another detour and reliever Craig Lef-ferts continued his struggles as the Padres blew a four-run lead en route to Fridays 5-4 loss to the Chicago Cubs. San Diego State alumnus Mark Grace capped a three-run rally in the ninth inning with a two-out double off Lefferts (0-5) that sent the Padres to their fourth consecutive loss. Hurst, seeking his eighth victory in nine starts, took a 4-2 lead into the ninth. Hurst who had two hits, including his first career double was hoping to become the National Leagues third 15-game winner following the Braves Tom Glav-ine and the Dodgers Ramon Martinez but Chicagos comeback foiled that bid.

Shawon Dunston started the rally with a one-out single, his third hit of the game. Pinch-hitter Hector Villanueva tripled to score Dunston. Villanueva got what he felt was a lucky break when his long drive into the left field corner eluded bewildered left fielder Jerald Clark. Villanueva, with his first triple in 42 games this year and second in 94 games in his major-league career, was somewhat surprised his ball was not caught. I thought the ball was playable, because at first, I thought it was going out, Villanueva said.

The guys in the dugout were kind of kidding me, saying: Hey, Hector, you dont hit triples. Please see PADRES, D4 Late touchdown drive elevates backup to No. 1 MICHAEL McCANNTimes Advocate SAN DIEGO Earlier in the week, coach Dan Henning gave the impression that Billy Joe Tolliver would be the Chargers starting quarterback when the season opens on Sept. 1. But late Friday night, after Tolliver was booed off the Jack Murphy Stadium field and backup John Friesz engineered an electrifying third-quarter touchdown drive in Fridays 17-7 preseason loss to the Los Angeles Raiders, Henning didnt hesitate to make a quarterback swap.

Friesz made an immediate impact, leading a flawless six-play, 79-yard touchdown drive that ignited the crowd and elevated the emotional intensity of the game to that of a postseason playoff. Granted, most of Frieszs completions including a string of 11 straight came against the Raiders second-team defense, but his performance left no doubt in Hennings mind who will lead the Chargers into their Sept. 1 opener at Pittsburgh. I dont think there is any question from what happened out there, Henning said. Well give John a chance to keep that spark going.

He completed KARRIE LIN CARLSONTimt-s Advocate The Raiders Anthony Smith sacks Chargers quarterback Billy Joe Tolliver. the passes and Billy didnt. Thats putting it mildly. Friesz, who has not started any of the Chargers four preseason games, connected on all but two passes, going 17-for-19 for 210 yards and the touchdown. Tolliver, meanwhile, completed only seven of 17 attempts for 94 yards and an interception.

Though he usually lingers in the post-game locker room, Tolliver quickly exited before reporters reached him. Call it whatever you want, but John seized the opportunity tonight, quarterbacks coach Ted Tollner said. He did everything we needed him to do. You cant play any better. If riesz has played better, it was against lesser opponents at the University of Idaho, where he was one of the most dominant quarterbacks in NCAA Division I-AA history an experience he remembers well.

It felt very similar tonight to when I was in college, Friesz said. It brought back memories of when I was successful. But I think I can go a lot further. Im elated. This is my chance and Im going to go with it.

Please see CHARGERS, B5 Escondido eliminated from Series BASEBALL: Post 149 loses second straight game in American Legion tournament, 8-5 to Gonzales, La. Or are they? The second-year International Hockey League club struck a deal this week with the San Diego Cable Sports Network to air 15 home games including the season opener Oct. 3 against Salt Lake City and announced a move to radio station XEK (950 AM), which will carry 30 of its 41 road games. The flip side is that the Gulls wont be on the radio at all when theyre at home. The arrangement is essentially an investment, one that Dave Forier, who negotiated the deal for the clubs new ownership, hopes pays off with greater fan support in the coming years.

We try to be smart marketers, Forier said Friday from his Los Angeles office. I dont look at it like were not on the radio at home. I look at it that we have 45 of our 82 events on radio or television, which is more than most IHL teams can say. Indeed, Forier called the deal for 15 live and free games the biggest in the league. He said only Salt Lake and Phoenix have anything that rivals it, putting sporadic road games on the tube on a delayed basis.

The Gulls had a handful of road games on television last season, and had ambitious plans to carry all their games on radio. But team spokesman Chris Elio said that during the second half of the season it proved to be a tough sell. Many road games never made it on the radio. Not anyone, at least in North County, knew it. Butts must decide: make a point or play TOD LEONARDTimes Advocate Beathard wasnt as hopeful.

Although he thought talking with Steinberg was a positive step, he was discouraged by Steinbergs phone conversation with Butts in the middle of their meeting. Beathard said Butts didnt sound in the reconciling mood. It seems like Marion still wants a pot of gold out of this, said Beathard. Hes not going to get it. Steinberg was scheduled to meet with Butts and his girlfriend Felicia late Friday night, and the agent anticipated talking to Beathard today.

When Steinberg was asked if he would advise Butts to report by Monday the day rosters are cut to 47 players the agent carefully chose his words. I think its important to have a week of practice prior to the first game in order to be effective, he said. Were talking about a determined runner who would like to better what he did last year. Obviously, the key to his financial success comes through putting in great performances. Glum faces in the dug-out told the story: no magic, no miracles. Escondidos bid for national glory turned sour on a hot Friday afternoon. Despite a late-inning rally, Post 149 fell to Gonzales, 8-5 and was eliminated from the 66th American Legion World Series. It always hurts to go home, said starting pitcher Brian Kooi-man. But only one team in the nation leaves with a victory.

I can live with being in the top eight. After the Series opener, a 6-1 win over Sarasota, it appeared Escondido had the weapons to make a solid run at the title. But two loses within 24 hours ended the quest. I thought we were really flat, really tired, said outfielder Mike Frank. We were giving everything we had.

We just didnt have anything. Frank had two doubles and scored the games SAN DIEGO It has become readily apparent that agent Leigh Steinbergs role in holdout running back Marion Butts dispute with the Chargers is that of a peacemaker, not a negotiator. Now its up to Butts and how much peace hes in the mood for. Steinberg met Friday afternoon with Bobby Beathard at the Charger general managers Leucadia home. The result was predictable: Beathard continues to refuse to renegotiate Butts contract.

As a result, Steinberg hinted he would advise Butts to quickly report to the Chargers, hoping the issue of Butts contract could be settled without public fanfare. The bottom line is that (Butts) has a contract and he will ultimately honor it, said Steinberg, who was hired by Butts on Tuesday after his two previous agents couldnt work a deal.
