By BEAUTY is just as dependent for ita appeal unon the intangible as wen as the tangible thincs in a woman's make-up. ny make up.

In this case, is meant the wom an's personality, character and physical attributes. It is, of course, a truism to say that beauty is only skin deep and that tran scendingr beauty is the beauty that speaks from the soul. But it will stand constant repetition. Too much emphasis cannot be laid upon the vital relation of habit to beauty achievement an.l retention. Beautiful features, sparkling eyes, waving hair, a pur led complexion, all combined in one woman should, apparently, bring about a type of beauty that is flawless.

As a matter of actual fact, however, this is not so. The habits und mannerisms of a woman who possesses this extraordinary combination of the physical attri butes of beauty can make or mar her pulchritude, (live me, personally, the woman plain ot face and devoid of physical charms, but possessing an unmistakable, palpable beauty of state of mind and of habit, (live me this type of woman. I repeat, in preference to the woman who is 100 percent carnally beautiful but lacking: in these refinements of grace, character and habit which nir.rk your truly beauti ful woman. I once saw these words in print: "Tron out the disfiguring ivrinkles of petulance from your disposition and watch the sun rise." How true this is! To my mind, nothing de. tracts from a woman's beauty so much as more or less continual dis plays of petulance, annoyance, anijer and ftpite.

It is easy, oh, so easy, to give vent to petulance. Yet there ure any numbers of women who, by dint of exercising con siderable self control, have learned to overcome any tendencies toward unpleasant emotional outbursts. If one would count ten slowly before pivin-j way to that feeling of anger and annoyanee. and then maintain this practice of forbearance for a prolonged period, the results would be truly surprising. In a short time, it would be found that the early impulses toward anger nnd petulance wore becoming weaker and weaker, the will power stronger and stronger and the disposition nelter and better.

these results would soon be reflected in a pleasant sparkle in the eye, the nerves would not lie quite so frayed or "on edge," the digestion would be Improved and more important than all, the very absence of the habit of petulance would enhance a thou sandfold any beauty one might possess. And if. perchance, physical beauty were not hers, the beauty of the soul, ot tier personality would more than make up for it. There are many other habits that are ruinous to beauty. For instance, that more or less persistent trait of many women while engaged in animated conversation lo twist and screw up their mouths, wrinkle their toreheads and 111 divers other ways contorting their features in a most unpleasant way.

Not only does this sort, of thing make some women look downright hideous, but it actually hastens on old nge through the formation of wrinkles and the TEIir-ACH (MB CARD PARTY. Triangle tH sagging of facial muscles or tissues And there are other manifestations of bad habits, apparently of trivial nature, that are likewise conducive to the premature arrival of age, aside from those of anger and petulance just mentioned. These I will take up in the near future. Just now, I should like to discuss habit, now.

thankfully, much on the wane, which has been fraught with more harm to woman than any other single liabit that I know of. Before I go on to ampiify niy statement I should like to say, in passing, that the encouragement of certain habits is highly desirable because they are so productive of eventual beauty. I know many handsome women who attribute their good looks to a sane and sober home life; to an interest in work; to active outdoor life, such as tenl nis. boating, golf, swimming and driving: to the formation of proper and lasting friendships; to the cultivation of a love for music In the home, at theater and opera; to clean living and so on. Perhaps there ts no one element in habit formation more potent, for good than the habit of listening to (or playing) good music.

A lover of good music cannot possibly have a small and perverted personality. The most pernicious habit of woman is the formerly ultra smart fad of smoking. One of the beautiful things about woman has ever been her femininity. Assuredly, this decided masculine habit docs not promotf! that, atmosphere of feminillitV nlinill ct xtmmnn greatly appeals to man. The liabit took root, as do a good many fads, among tho elite of society and Greenwich Villagers.

Very soon tho habit spread from the privacy of the drawing room, to the openness of the restaurant, and theater lobby. Working girls in large numbers speedily aped the habit so that it ueaii iu juok as inougu me entire world of woman won IH rrn their daily routine with a cigarette stuck in the corner of the erstwhile dainty feminine mouth. Fortunately, however, the good sense and Innate refinement of many women came to the surface and began to frown down upon this unpleasant habit. Men eprttiintv rli.l 1 it und even today where I see the occasional woman smoking In a public restaurant, blatantly and brazenly, I can" observe the looks of men directed toward her pregnant with contempt and dis gust.
