Cl should have made and I know he thinks he could have made.

Asked if he is where he wants to be after three games, Tolliver said: No way. You have to make the big plays and I havent been getting that done. Its good to leave the game with a lead, but it could have been much bigger. If olliver wasnt always good, he was lucky. His first bit of good fortune came on the Chargers third offensive play.

On third down from the 49er 36, Tolliver threw a pass toward the end zone that appeared to be short, but Miller came back for the ball and caught it between veteran cor-nerbacks Ronnie Lott and Darryl Pollard. Miller then backed into the end zone for a touchdown to give the Chargers a 7-0 lead. Early in the second quarter, Tolliver got another break on a pass thrown short to Miller. It was Lott and Pollard who again lost to the crafty receiver, who gained 41 yards to the San Francisco 30. But Tolliver overthrew Quinn Early and Rod Bernstine when they were open on corner routes in the end zone, so the Chargers had to settle for a 26-yard field goal by John Carney.

That cut the 49ers lead to 14-10 with 9:06 remaining in the First half. On the ensuing kickoff, San Franciscos First-round draft pick, Dexter Carter, muffed Fuad Reveizs short kickoff and Walter Wilson recovered for the Chargers at the 49er 26. But the Chargers squandered the opportunity. Tolliver lost 12 yards on a sack and then mis-Fired on two passes, forcing San Diego to punt. San Diego pulled to ithin 14-12 on a safety taken by San Francisco punter Greg Horne, who ran out the back of the end zone after a snap by Frank Pollack sailed ov er his head.

After the 49ers kicked off from their ow 20. olliv er threw three straight completions to march the Chargers to the San Francisco 30. But he missed Miller badly twice and then had a good throw to the corner of the end zone dropped by rookie ide receiver Walter Wilson. Reveiz booted a 34-yard Field goal with 51 seconds left in the half to give the Chargers the 15-14 lead. NOTES: San Francisco quarterback Joe Montana played nearly three quarters.
