Col. North Carolina to a similar position in Virginia would have been regarded by Virginia with much dislike. But North-Carolinians are a law-abiding people, and without much open complaint they saw Col.

August come among them and fill the place of Ool. Mallett Jthey witnessed his admin istration and had full opportunity to. criticise it gome of the newspapers, and I think ycurs among 'them, protested against calling an officer from another State to perform 6uch a This protest was national and natural. Col. August continued in the discharge of "his duties, as they were, in our very midst, and folj one, I confess I was perhaps but too ready to hear something to his disparagement But I did no On the contrary, the universal evidence with my own experience, furnished proof of his entire and excellent fitness for tho post.

While in the enjoyment of this deserved reputation he was relieved by the recovery of Col. Mallett, and left as, carrying with him the sincere regards of all, for the courteous, just and benignant manner which he bad displayed in the discharge of his duties. I asked a gentleman lately who had much intercourse with im during has stay among us, how he had become, so great a favorite and was answared, that lie was of liberal, fair and enlightened mind prone from his pression to examine every matter thoroughly and patiently; he did not jump to his conclusions impulsively and impatiently. He did not belong to that class of officials who set out systematically to PresideDt of the Board of Triiftees. Hon.

The battles of Saturday and Sunday around Chancellorsville were stubbornly contested, long and bloody, but by the 'determination of our brave boys either to conquer or to die, by the superiority of their valor, fighting as they were against great odds, we succeeded ia routing them and driving them ignominiously from the field, seeking shelter, to a place of safety across the Rappahannock. i Respectfully, ROBT. I disregard the law, or bend it whenever itsviews or policy came in conflict with their own but executed it with fidelity and truth, according to the views and Dolicv of the law-maker: and therefore, it is that he gave such general satisfaction. And, he added, that in his interviews upon questions arising out of the conscript law, he was as patient ana attentive, with a miod even and open to conviction; as. was that great model judge Sir Matthew Hale.

Alas! how little is he imitated by the military judges generally. Greater, so much, however, is the praise1 ot Col. August. For the Standard. VIRGINIA TRUTH AND JUSTICE.

Mr. Editor A gentleman of our State has just returned from the battlefield near Chancellorsville, which he visited to obtain the body of his heroic son who fell in the terrible charge upon the enemy's breastworks on Sunday morning. He has related to me an incident which occurred during his absence, that should be put upon record, that ou North Carolina boys may know how some cowardly anil ungenerous Virginians slander their good name. Upon the arrival of the cars in Rjchinond! on the Wednesday after the fight, ouii informant anx ious to glean some tidings of the battles, entered one of the cara and asked if there were any North- L-aronnians aboard A so-called Virginia gentleman a member ofsome committee, was standing at or irear the door, replied, Ub, yes, these are all North Carolinians. They always manage to get off with slight, trifling Such is Virginia truth and justice.

I his poor slanderer unfortunately rep resents a large class of people in Virginia who never have done, nor never will do justice to our State. They are envious traducers of a race their equals in every respect at least in truth, patriotism and mr.nly courage. The battles ground Richmond battles fought in defence of Virginia's Capitol, furnished a record which tells that North-Carolina lost perhaps twice the number that Virginia did in those memorable conflicts. It was probably so in Maryland, and I have no doubt when the statistics are gathered, it will be so in the recent sanguinary battles. I undiH-stand that the troops in Virginia from other States generally do our soldiers full justice, but Virginians never do.

It is now the 12th day since the battle of Monday, and yet, no man out of North-Carolina would ever know from a Virginia paper that there was a private from our State in the late great battles. There seems to be studied neglect on the part of Virginia editors. One of their regiments, losing forty or fifty men, will have a column or two devoted to recounting its exploits, but a North Carolina regiment, like, the 13th, may lose 248 out of 410 men, or like the 7th, ltf'J out of 317, and yet, there is a great probability that not one line will be ever published in a Virginia paper to chronicle the fact. More than half of D. H.

Hill's division, and nearly or quite half of A. P. Hill's are North-Carolinians, but this you will never learn from a Richmond paper, Why, only the other day some correspondent compliment-ing'D. M. Hill's old division, said it was composed if regiments from three or four Southern States, but tookcaro to leave out that State which had fur-jwhed perhaps three-fourths of the troops.

iw, Mr. Editor, these things have existed from the fight at Bethel. I fear tnat North-Carolina need never expect any thing from a vain-glorious Virgin-tan but cool contempt and gross slander. It seems to be ingrain to be a part of the texture of Virginia character to traduce and slight that people who have stood -by the Old Dominion in all the fiery trials of the past two years. It is to be apprehended that those Virginians who have essayed to write the history of these troublous times, may treat the Old North State with the same unjustice that she fias been subjected to by the sprigs of Virginia aristocracy.

But of that we shall know more hereafter. I have he honor to subscribe myself A Thorough. Ngktu-Carolinian. Caswell county, N. C.
