Snyder, Franklin; Edward H. Lewis, Buffalo, N. and Donald D. the machine stationary when it has been rammed into the material to be loaded. The braking mechanism is also used in steering and in repositioning the machine at the place where the work is to be performed.

In the operation of these loading machines, there are times when it is desirable that the brakes be applied immediately after driving mechanism has been disconnected, and thus means are provided to automatically achieve this end. However, there are other instances in which this automatic operation of the brakes as soon as the drive has been discontinued is disadvantageous. For example, this is the case when the machine is going down a steep grade and it is desirable to disconnect the tractor treads from their power drive while at the same time it is very important to be able to brake them. A similar situation may also occur when making a turn. To cope with this problem and provide an improvement in the operation of these loading machines, Mr.

Frellsen has devised a drive and brake mechanism whereby the brakes may automatically be applied practically instantaneously upon the interrup tion of the drive irrespective of the direction in which the latter has been taking place. However, he also provides additional control elements whereby, when the drive is interrupted, the brakes may be operated manually. In other words, his invention permits either automatic or manual control of brakes in accordance with the judgment of the operator and with a manually applied braking force that may be varied in accordance with encountered conditions.
