They are anxiously awaiting favorable weather to begin the work of extending their lines and making numerous improvements.

Last summer and fall they did a large amount of work toward the improvement of their lines and bettering the car service. The Third avenue extension was built and put in operation, It opened up a large territory and the travel over it is evidenoe enough that it has met with the approval of the people. New combination cars were placed on the Logan Valley line, another marked etride toward better service. The tracks of the City Paseenger company were much improved. Along Chestnut avenue the tracks were renewed.

Over both lines the trolley wire was replaced with a new and improved one and new poles were erected. The sum of 65,000 was epent in making these improvements, but then it is not one-fifth of that which will be expended in extending and improving them this year. The companies have decided upon improvements in this city that will cost 1350,000. They are only awaiting the coming of favorable weather to begin work. The old track will be taken up and replaced with the heavy sixty-foot rails, which will be put down like that on Chestnut avenue, on a concrete bed.

They have authorized the building of extensions to reach every available point in the city. This include extensions to Fairview and Smithtown, bringing thobe suburbs in closer communication with the business centre of the city. The old small cars will be replaced by large modern cars. Eight more of the large double truck cars, like those now in use on the Logan Valley line, have been ordered and are expected to arrive in time to accommodate summer traffic A number of improvements will be made at the power plant. An addition to the power houee 60x90 feet for the boosing of a large storage battery plant to aeeist in furnishing power in operating the cars.

An immense car barn that will hold 100 cars will be erected. The ground for these buildings has already been purchased from the Biker estate and work on them will be began as soon as the frost leaves the ground. They will be of brick and as the local manage tuent bas the best interest of Altoona at heart the material for them and the contracts will very likely be awarded to local contractors.
