UKIAH DAILY JOURNAL- FRIDAY, JANUARY 16, 1987- 3 VIDEO (Continued from page 1) formation about ethnic holidays as a reflection of community arts and cultural traditions. A marked increase in Hispanic surnames signed in the museum's guest book revealed a local interest in the museum exhibit and growth in attendence by the Hispanic community. The video also was shown for six weeks in Fort Bragg at the Mendocino Art Center's gallery in Daly's department store. Interest in bringing the video into the elementary schools has been very high, according to McHone. The presentations scheduled for February and March will be augmented by live art project demonstrations by craftspeople in the video.

Artwork to be demonstrated includes pinata making, bandera and paper singing and dancing and vine wreath making. A second video to be produced with the grant money will focus on one Hispanic crafts person. The additional video will record the artistic process as well as include an oral history, thereby recording a knowledge of customs dating back for generations. The second video also will be filmed in the classroom and include interviews with participating students. Some of the footage from the first video will be incorporated into the second.

Merlo, who also produced an Actor Bolger dies Lynn Merlo Mercedes Lopez, a creator of colorful plnatas, gets a hand from Maria Guzman. oral history project in 1984, will again be the script writer and translator for the second video. Serving as bilingual coordinator will be Ramon Mendoza, president of the Concilio Latino. The video crew will be contracted out of the County Office of Education under the direction of Jim Merill. Lastly, the project workers will create a small manual that describes the process by which a multicultural community organization (Concilio Latino) and an arts agency (Mendocino County Arts Coalition) worked together to raise multicultural awareness through art.

The manual will describe the benefits of this cooperation and list the resources that are available in rural areas. The manual and a flyer about the project will then be sent to the California Association of Bilingual Educators and other bilingual groups throughout the state. Anyone interested in viewing the video or learning more may contact Merlo at 462-6244, or McHone at 1-459-6171. Public ignoring Iranscam reports WASHINGTON (UPI) The Iran arms-Contra aid scandal is "a story Americans don't like," because it has hurt public opinion of President Reagan, and they blame reporters even though they trust them more than Reagan, a poll reveals. The Times Mirror survey, conducted by the respected Gallup Organization, was released Thursday showing a significant plunge in President Reagan's approval rating despite "an amazing lack of public attentiveness" to news reports.

Slightly more than half of the 1,500 people surveyed between Dec. 27 and Jan. 4 still believe in Reagan's leadership and credibility, but only 28 percent said they think he is doing all he can to "get to the bottom" of the scandal. The poll showed 42 percent of Americans now doubt Reagan's ability to run the country, 46 percent consider him "not believable" and 38 percent feel he is withholding information to protect himself. Also significant is that while 57 percent viewed Challenger news coverage as "excellent," only one in five of those following the Iran-Contra story offered a similar assessment.

LOS ANGELES (UPI) Ray Bolger, the limber-legged actor and dancer who played the Scarecrow in "The Wizard of Oz" and the last surviving member of the cast that followed the Yellow Brick Road in the 1939 classic, has died of cancer. He was 83. Bolger died Thursday at Nazareth House, a Roman Catholic board and care facility where he had been for several weeks, said his wife of 57 years, Gwendolyn Rickard, who was at his side. The couple had no children. "His death was a long time coming," Rickard said.

"He had been ill on and off for more than two years. But thank God he didn't suffer." Rickard said her husband died just five days after his 83rd birthday. "We had a little impromptu birthday for him there (at Nazareth House) with champagne and a cake. He was in good spirits," Rickard said, "although very, very ill." She said services would probably be held Monday evening at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Beverly Hills, with burial Tuesday at Holy Cross Cemetery. Gene Kelley, a fellow actor and dancer, expressed sorrow at his old friend's death.

"I lost a very good friend," Kelly said. Bolger began his theatrical career in vaudeville, graduated to the Broadway stage, then went to Hollywood where his comic talent, limber legs and tapping feet made him an international star. SITS REG $4 thru Feb 28 across from Uklnh Wells Fargo 402-ltW) (deal weight charts 'too high' CHICAGO (UPI) The average American is at least 10 percent over ideal body weight, hilled into a false sense of security by "desirable" weight charts that are also a bit on the heavy side, researchers say. The conclusion by doctors from the Harvard School of Public Health, published in today's Journal of the American Medical Association, will likely not go down as easily as last night's dessert. "No, that won't make a lot of people too happy, I imagine," said Dr.

JoAnn Manson of Harvard and the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston. "All the available evidence suggest that minimum mortality occurs at weights that are at least 10 percent below U.S. averages," Manson said. Obesity is medically defined as 20 percent over optimal body weight. The latest assault on the national waistline comes four years after the great collective sigh and belt loosening of 1983, when Metropolitan Life Insurance Co.

revised its weight-for-height charts upwards to accommodate new data. The Metropolitan chart, based on 4.2 million people who have applied for life insurance since 1950, long has been considered the standard reference for most desirable weight for a person of a particular height, sex and build. However, Manson and her colleagues said the Metropolitan chart fails to correct for the effects of cigarette smoking, a behavior that tends to keep weight down while disproportionately increasing mortality for lighter weights. "If you look only at groups of smokers or groups of nonsmokers, you see a much stronger relationship between obesity and mortality," Manson said.
