Dear Nancy-Whenever 'talk of a party comes up, or somebody suggests that the gang go somewhere for dancing and chow, my house is always list. Mother and dad have told me that they like to have my friends in, and they help out a lot themselves, even to lending the car for transportation when we're desperate. But it's become a habit with the crowd to make our house their headquarters, and any day or night they pile in without a thought. I think it's so swell of my parents to take that atti- the one on top of the tude that I don't Nancy Mottram want to impose on them too much, but since the gang's taken over, how can I put the idea across? (A.) You'll have to play champion for mom and dad for a change, give them a chance to catch their breath and get reacquainted with peace and privacy in their own house. When the next "Let's all go over to your place" suggestion pops up, tactfully discourage the idea by the excuse that it won't be very convenient for the family---maybe dad's busy, or mother's had a hectic week and the gang descending on your (doorstep wouldn't help her catch up on her rest, or perhaps company's expected.

Let the rest of the fellows and gals give with the hospitality from time to time, and take on some of the burden. Then, all of you won't some day have to face the fact that you've worn out your welcome. (Q.) Dear Nancy--I have a problem, and a choice to make. $2.00. By Prof. L. A. WARSOFF Department of Political Science, Brooklyn College, Graduate School, Brooklyn Law School This slender collection of three lectures originally presented by one of the great teachers of our age at the University of Chicago is of vital im- a portance in liberty threatened times such as ours.

Everywhere on the American scene freedom of speech is in danger of restriction, either by unAmerican committees or by individuals. Professor Meiklejohn shows that if our freedom of speech is to be maintained, it is only by allowing the fullest possible liberty to those whose ideas are contrary to ours. Restrict this freedom, he shows, and you will produce--as John Stuart Mill pointed out---a nation of small And who will then be left to accomplish the really great things of which we are capable? The main stream of argument concerns the view that government "is justified in bringing pressure to bear against the holding or expressing of beliefs which are labeled In a time when Communists are trying to destroy the very form of government which assures them the freedom to clamor for its destruction, the question as to whether they may be permitted the continued expression of their beliefs is no longer an academic one. The First Amendment to the Constitution reads that "Congress shall make no law. abridging the freedom of speech The author shows how this was interpreted by Justice Holmes in the famous "clear and present danger" clause so that it has now come to signify that wherever the expression of a minority opinion threatens the public safety, that may legally be denied the protection of the First Amendment.

Such a denial, says the author, arises out of a misconstruction of the intent of the First Amendment. The basis for this denial is to be found in the decision rendered in 1919 by the Supreme Court in which majority decision ruled that "the freedom of speech of the American community may abridged by legislative action." One prospect is (L fellow I've dated off and on for almost a year, and the other is some one new whom Tre never dated, but whom I'd like to know better. Should I take a chance on inviting him, even though he might say no, or ask the other and be sute of a date? (A.) Life would be pretty dull if new people didn't pop into your days often, and who knows, he might not only say yes, but this first date could be the first of a long line. And since the other fellow isn't a steady item with you, you won't be risking losing him for good by asking another. Go ahead and do the inviting- you'll never know what you might be missing if you haven't the courage or the nerve to try your luck. (Q.) Dear Nancy-L'm-having some difficulty with a family, but it isn't mine.

My parents like the boy I'm dating now, but his mother and dad don't care for me very much, and although it hasn't made any difference in his feelings toward me, I'm afraid it might cause trouble eventually. I don't want to break up with him, so would you please give me some advice? (A.) It's probably nothing personal, but they don't know you. and you're taking up a lot of their son's leisure time, so they're against the romance on general principles. It's up to both you and the boy to change their minds. Give them a chance to get to know you, and polish up your best manners and personality when he takes you to call.

There's no sense in giving up the lad without making an effort to get at the root of the trouble. Since he has to face the objections, it's his duty to help your cause on the homefront, too. And maybe it won't be such a long time before they see for themselves why you've made such a big impression on their son. In the great anxiety to protect the most essential requirement of a democracy--that of freedom of speech, especially in a time when people confuse tolerance with patriotism, Professor Meiklejohn probably overlooks that freedom of speech, freedom of press, freedom of assembly are not eternal truths which must exist under any and all circumstances. They are necessarily limited by the rights of other people, and by the demands of national safety and welfare. We enjoy freedom of speech, but not enjoy the right to mealie speeches which are slanderous, obscene or which incite people to crime. Marion C. Your Birthday By Stella TUESDAY, JUNE 7-Born to- day, you have the fortunate combination of being practical and a dreamer. Your intuitions are exceptionally keen and you can follow them safely as a rule.

You may not admit that you do since you like to think your reason rules. Actually, you are very emotional and need to control that side of your nature. You a are exceptionally fond of music and will probably enjoy playing some instrument at least for your own pleasure-if not professionally. You enjoy all the good things of life and will be happiest if you live in harmonious surroundings.
