A MAN OF MANY PARTS. Just before midnight on Saturday Constable Yickera came across a younjr man who was indulging in mock heroic conduct in the presence of a crowd which liadgaliiorcd near the British Crown Hotel, Smith-street, lie shrieked out that he was "Buffalo Bill front the prancing prairie." His accompanying whoops were calculated to disturb tho neighborhood, and he was quietly asked to eatry his romance to his own home. When he saw that the constable was not awed at the announcement that he was Buffalo Bill, he assumed another plat, or a total depth of 1015 feet. It holds 1000 feet on the line of reef, and at only one level has it worked up to the south boundary, that at 685 feet, where he eastern run of spurs has been worked up to the South New Moon boundary. In places this eastern run was taken down fora width of 130 feet, and when stoping win being carried on iu this part of the mine it would have been a comparatively easy thing for the occasional visitor to have lost himself in the labyrinth of stacks that were necessary to carry on operations, so as the risk of accidents could be reduced to a minimum.

This level at 035 feet is thought to be only about 60 feet east of the gerous sport which the turf provides could hardly wish for a more attractive menu. Simultaneously with the Victoria Racing Club, the committee of the Victoria Amateur Turf Club announces the conditions of its Grand National Hurdle Race and Steeplechase, to be held in August next. 8. JilOO. Hurdle li.ice: but in tlie latter instance an a general character to be dealt with, having a vital bearing upon the interests of the fruit growers, every society should see to being represented. A majority of the asso-ikaions have already notified items of social business intended to be brought up, and among these "consideration of the Diseases Act'' has a place almost in each. On this subject an expert contributor writes us: appears from tlip reports of tlie officers ad-miuisieriiijr tlie Vegetation Diseases Act that a va-rely of tin Jose scale insect lias Iiecn found Watitraratta on a species of eucalyptus, and lias Kpu identified as Aapidiotus eucalypti, and that Hie 'ential Board has heen advised to ask the shire uumtil of North Ovens to destroy the two trees Lv tiiL.

M. f-f New Zealand, in the transactions cf (he lioyal Society of South Australia, and bears no elrscr relation to the San Jose than any other oi the SO species of the genus Aspidiotus; and as is a wvy widely distributed species, occurring on ii variety of eucalypts and casuarinre (I have retried it myself mm Creswick, Bendigo and Valley district), it stands to re.iwn that having a knowledge of the life history and iliitri! nit ion of this insect, would nnver dream of iwimnonding the destruction of two harmless in erf, Ixeausc Fpecimc-ns were observed on them. i would be veiy unwise indeed to go to the cx-pens" of destroying two trees, when scores of other lort-st trees are similarly atfected.

Tlie foregoing ciilv helps to prove how important is is that or-i-baVd inspectors should have a thorough practical lomvledge. of the nature and life histories of the inlets of Australia, in order to carry out the pro-tii''ns of the Vegetation Bisease Act without in-lolviiiir unnecessary expense, end to impart cor-nxi information to orchard ists and a ignerons, tihr, in the absence of a knowledge of the eU'inents of entomology, are unable to grasp the benefit 3 derived from a study of the life history of the urms peels. In the meantime, tlie orchardists should not forget that they who have gone to trouble and expense to keep their properties free of pests it in their own hand to very greatly help the Minister by informing him by letter of the location of 'insect-infected orchards. Such advice would, as a matter of course, lie held private and confidential, and upon receipt a capable inspector be despatched to the spot.

Last year the journey was four miies, and owing to an unfortunate blunder on the part of some of the riders in the race, a mistake was made regard iner the last round. This mistake had the effect of seriously handicapping what otherwise might have proved a very popular item on the programme, and it is regrettable that the committee have felt compelled to make an alteration in the length of the race because oi the MundiTing of some of the jockeys who rode lat year. The distance next August will be thiee miles three furlongs and 128 yards, which will enable the start to be made at ihe point from which the field for the First t'aullield Futurity Stakes, of seven furlongs, were despatched last month. The programme of the V.R.C. Queen's Birthday meeting was framed by the committee yesterday.

There is an increase in firize money, the amount of added money laving hen augmented and the sweepstakes which go to the winners considerably increased in value. Last year only 950 sovs. were given away; this year tlie slakes wilt total 1000 the increase consisting of an additional 2.) sovs. tacked on to the Two-Year-Old Handicap and the. Welter Handicap.

In the Huidle Kaee, tiie Two-Year-did Handicap, the Welter Handicap and the Koyal Handicap, the sweepstakes will be 3 sovs. instead of 2 the 4 sovs. instead of 2 sovs. and the Birthday Handicap 5 sovs. instead of 4 sovs.

The distances remain the same in every case. There continues to be speculation in Melbourne on the Doncaster Handicap and Sydney Cup. The best favorites for the former race are Vedette, Iiobadil, Keapcr, Sailor Boy, Adoration, Syerla, La Carabine, Haven's lMume and Talavera, but 10 to 1 is still offered on tlie field. During the last six years, in addition to the extensive opening up of the mine, there has been a large amount expended in the erection of new machinery, and the greater portion of the purchase money of an extensive battery in the vicinity of the mine has been paid off. At the present time it is contemplated to lay down a tramway to the crushing machine, and thus avoid the large expenditure that is incurred in the carting of stone. The history of the mine affords evidence as to the value of the work of the tributers in a claim, for it was the tributers' discoveries that led the company up to the stone that has been so successfully worked for so nmny years, and also given proof of the advantages to be derived by the temporary advance of moneys by the Mines department to struggling companies. The council of the chamber further con sidered the question of the proposal of the Eastern Extension Company to lay a cable torn 'tied, even by the most perfect system ot veiUbuon. All gW-s are therefore first extracted frm tlie meat by means of vacmitn, and thorough and even impregnation is subsequently effected by pjvssure before the sides have come in contact with llie nir. The process is effected by means of a cylinder closed at one end, and fitted with a movable shield or door at the open end.

This door bis to stand a pressure of 120 or ISO lb. to the wiiare inch, equal to 700 ton on a surface fl fect in diameter. The necessary resistance is obtained bv of hvdraulic ranis, which hold the door in position, and it moves on a travel line pulley running on a rail overhead, and rai easily be placed in position and adjusted by two nun in as many minutes. Muos to be cured are placed on wooden tras wHch lide into iron framework fixed on trollies. Th-se trollies are loaded outside the cylinder, and run on mils, which continued inside the machine.

MINING MEETINGS BROKEN HILL SOITH SILVER COMPANY. A LIVELY MEETING. The half yearly meeting of tlie Broken Hill South Silver Mining Company was held yesterday in PreM's-buildings, under the presidency of Mr. M. R.

Greene. The balance sheet showed a credit of 14,867 13s. 4d. to the profit and loss account. The Chairman stated that the mine was looking uncommonly well, and the report of the underground manager showed that a marked improvement had taken place, Since that report was drawn up the mine had continued to open up well, and there was a large amount of ore in view.

A Bd. dividend would be paid on 22nd April, and for the hiture there was every prospect of quarterly dividends. He moved the adoption of the rep ort und balance sheet. Mr. T.

Learmomh seconded the motion. Mr. L. A. Jvssup, one of the Adelaide directors, said he visited the mine the other day, and he could assure the meeting that everything possible was being done in the interests of (lie ttiureholders.

The mine was not full of "jewellers' shops," and unless it was worked economically it would not pay. The mining committee lud three great dilH-cufties to contfiul apaitist. The writ Iters, amongst whom some sort of freemasonry existed, had raised their charge 10s. a ton, which meant a cost of alout a week to the company. They were spending t2f)n0 a year in water, and could get no concessions from the water company.

The question of freights was also a serious one. Mr. T. J. tireenway, consulting engineer, said there was try litile change to reitori U-yond th op-mng up of a laixe bmly of ore in tlie iJO fitt level, hich was not expjcted.
