I HELP THE-POOR HORSES Editor Brooklyn Daily Eagle: Citizens of Brooklyn, will you allow another winter to come and go without stopping the awful cruelty to the horses In your city? Are there none humane enough to Insist that the corporation horses be provided with chains In the slippery weather? This matter has been discussed and passed by again and again, and it is a positive disgrace to any city to allow horses to suffer the anguish one can see any day in winter. These poor, defenseless, faithful servants of man are allowed to sup and slide, their flesh quivering and tho steam going from their bodies in clouds from very terror and useless strain. It Is high time mat citizens agitate in every possible way until this disgraceful thing is altered. These days we are crying out at all "fright-fulness," and rightly, too, and yet are unheedingly allowing it in our very midst. Lovers of humanity, lovers of the defenseless ones, clergy, citizens, one and all who are not fiends, I appeal to you to act In this matter strongly and decisively.

Jacob Brenner, superintenaem or me religious school, announced that next Sunday morning tho Temple service flag will be unfurled. There will be fifty-nine stars in the flag for the members and their immediate families. The Chanukah entertainment given was in celebration of the festi-ni rs Tuii'j tu eon lie n.q. Bren ner performed the ceremony of kind for bright basic wire. Hudson River common brick prices are firm, but no considerable movement is expected.

There was a fair volume of arrivals, which wero added to the reserve accumulated about the Metropolitan District. Some dealers who were optimistic some time since have come to the realization that the market will experience but slight activity until next spring. The brick situation at P.aritan is extremely quiet. Only a small quantity of brick is being made on account of the scarcity of labor, and the high cost and difficulty of obtaining fuel and other essentials. Manufacturers are holding off for an advance in price, for they claim that at the existing level, 110 profit is possible.

The price of J8.75 per thousand is the lowest figure that the Raritan interests lire able to load their brick, and until this price is obtained no large volume of business is expected. The brick situation is spasmodic, with an interval of good business immediately followed by a period of slack conditions. There have been awarded a large number of structural requiring quantities of face brick. Leading dealers had hoped that, a resumption of building activity was at hand, but at present the site is clouded. arket for lumber products contiui.i active along practically all lines, construction demands being especially marked.

There, is only a fair vol. line of business being registered for 'eneral building work. At presei lumber prices are steady, hot ther is no promise as to the length of time this condition will maintain, for Governmental requirements next vear will be specially heavy. The market for cast iron pipe is quiet, with practically no orders or inquiries. This condition is expected to maintain until the result of the conferences between the manufacturers of pipe is announced.

While the action on prices is pending, quotations are nominal at. for G-lnch, 8-inch and heavier, and $50.50 for 4-inch. The market for tin is snbstantlaly inactive, although during the week it was announced that, tbe product stored in warehouses, commandeered bv the Government last week, has been released, except that appropriated for Federal requirements. This metal is again in the hands of the original owners, subject to distribution as determined by the American Iron and Steel Institute. Tin (imitations are nominal at SO cents New York.

Linseed oil is daily becoming more scarce, but the general market conditions are generally unchanged. 1'rlces arc somewhat firmer than last work, rind there is no immediate possibility "of a recession. New Building. DECEMBER 8. Fav 59th st.
