Oklahoma Historical OFKKJAL CITY PAPEB CHKCOTAH, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 12. 1964 Volume 57, Number 1 Diggers Beat Cats 22 To 16 Friday Night The Checotah Wildcatswere beaten 22 to 16 by the Wilburton Diggers In a Black Diamond football game at the Eastern stadium last Friday night. The Diggers scored in the first quarter on a 10-yard run around end. They ran the ball over for the extra points to take an 8 to 0 lead. In the third quarter, Larry Bledsoe broke through for 15 yards to score.

He added the two extra points to tie the game at 8 to 8. Wilburton scored on the fourth down from the one foot line in the last quarter to take a 1 6to 8 lead. Checotah had held for three downs inside the two yard line. Wilburton intercepted a Wildcat pass a few moments later and ran 55 yards to score. The try for extra points failed and the Diggers were ahead 22 to 8.

Mike Thompson set up a Checotah touchdown late in the fourth quarter when he took a pass from Duty good for 39 yards. Jim Bynum scored on an 18 yard pass from Martin and ran the ball across for the extra points to bring the score to 22 to 16. On the next kickoff Checotah recovered an onside kick on Wilburton's 40 yard line with about two minutes left in the game, but a Wildcat pass was Intercepted and the threat ended. Checotah made 147 yards from scrimmage compared to 285 for Wilburtoa They completed 6 of 14 passes for 115 yards while Wilburton connected on 3 of 9 passes for 36 yards. The Wildcats penalized 5 times for 55 yards and the Diggers drew 8 penalties for 100 yards.

Checotah will meet the strong Eufaula Ironheads in the final game of the season at the local park Friday night. Checotah has a 5-4 record. for the season and Eufaula has a 4-5 record. Based on playing records the two teams arc evenly matched. Wilburton defeated both teams by a one touchdown margin.

Legion To Hold Turkey Dinner The American Legion will enlcV tain Willi a free turkey dinner Thursday, November 19 starting at 6:45 p. at the Junior High school cafeteria. All members of the Legion and their families and of the Legion Auxiliary and their families are invited to attend. Lewis, Washington, where she attended a Little Theatre production in which her daughter, Sharon Theilig played the leading role. Tire play "The Pajama Game" a musical which was a well known Broadway ran for a week at the post. The two male leads were professional actors, choreography was done by a professional dancer and the sets were stunning. Isla Rae related that only one little incident was a little less than perfect. The first project will be a boat safety check w.iich will be held in cooperation with the Oklahoma Waterways Patrol.

It is tentatively set for the four weekends In April and will be held Checotah, McAlester, Eufaula, and Henryetta on successive week ends. Boat owners in those areas will asked to bring their boats and failers to designated places in each town. The Water-ways Patrol will conduct the actual nspection and will Issue Inspection stickers to the boats which pass. The Highway Patrol will inspect the trailers. It is stressed that no citations will be issued in cases where boats ind trailers do not meet requirements.

Romie Ott, Route 3, Checotah, and other members of the 1st Armored Division participated in a combined Army-Air Force live-fire exercise at Fort Hood, Texas, October 26. Durng the exercise Sergeant Ott received lastructlon in the combat arms and in small unit tactics as elements of the Air Force provided air support. The sergeant, a fire team leader in Company 2nd Battalion of the division's 46th Infantry, entered the Army In 1960. He attended Checotah High school. Mr.

Eby, county treasurer, in Eufaula. Taxes will become delinquent after December 31 after which a penalty of one percent a month will be added to each taxpayers bill The County treasurer's office will be open during the noon hour each day and up until noon each Saturday. Eby advised local taxpayers to pay early and avoid the last minute rush. Mrs. Sheppard's Rites Tuesday Funeral services for Mrs.

E. E. Sheppard were held Tuesday at 2:30 p. in the Assembly of God church in Checotah with Rev. J.

R. Moreland and Rev. James Bright officiating. Burial was in Greenlawn Cemetery' under direction of Smith Funeral home. Mrs.

Sheppard, 71, died Sunday in Fort Smith. after a short She was born February 16, 1893, in Van Buren, Ark. She had been a resident of Checotah since 1932. She was T. member of the Assembly of God church.

Survivors include two sons. Everett of Hominy and Bill of Rosevine. Calif; a sister, Mrs. Mattle Reeder of Ft. Smith; a brother.

Bryan Capps of Muskogee, and two grandchildren and three greatgrandchildren: Miss Rachel Hamm In Calvary Choir Rachel Hamm, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. W. Hamm of Checotah, is enrolled as a freshman student at Calvary Bible College In Kansas City, Mo.

She is a 1964 Checotah High school graduate. Rachel is one of 75 students who has been accepted In the Calvary Bible College choir, which will be making their annual tour of several states during the Easter vacation. She has been selected as one of the Varsity cheerleaders for the 1964-65 Warriors team. Their first games will be on November 20 at the Calvary Bible college gymnasium. Mrs.

J. H. Smith of Dustin is visiting her daughter, Mrs. Mack Keathley. for Oklahoma children in throughout the state.

The bills carried in and the iocal teachers are gratified that their patrons showed interest in studying the merits of the proposals and foresight in recognizing the vital necessity of such legislation in order that we might continue to be proud of our educational system and that our young people might have greater educational op- oortunity to fit them for a successful future in a country where an increasing premium is set on formal education. Checotah Band Rated Superior The Checotah band was awarded a superior rating in the all-district marching contest at Wewoka, October 31.

They rated excellent on marching. Twirling solos were taken by Mary Beth Martin. Doris Bivins, Sue Ritchie, and Ambia Woodard. They all received superior ratings. The duet of Mary Martin and Kay Vandiver received a superior and a group routine by all the majorettes received a rating of excellent.

On the previous week, the band went to the OIT Kansas football Mrs. Hugh Miller Dies Wednesday Graveside services were held Thursday at 2:00 for Mrs. Hugh Miller, who died Wednesday, after a long illness. Mrs. Miller, the former Gblda Johnston, was born" in Perry, Iowa.

She yas an artist of outstanding ability and taught art in the public schools of Muskogee and Tulsa Ijofore moving to Checotah in 1930. She was married MiHer in Sapulpa in 1927. She was a member of the Eastern Star and of the Presbyterian Burial was in Greenlawn Cemetery under the direction of the Smith Funeral home. Rev. Howard" Gage, pastor of tse Freewill Baptist church, read the simple rites.

She is survived by her husband of the home and one sister, Mrs. Pearl McCUIlah.
