Alabama romps to Homecoming victory By STEVE MARTIN Tuscaloosa Correspondent It will be many football seasons before Alabama fans, and opponents alike, forget gifted receiver Ozzie Newsome. A first round draft choice in the National Football League, Newsome now does his pass catching for the Cleveland Browns. Newsome, most definitely, is one of the most talented pass catchers ever to wear a crimson Jersey at Alabama. Saturday, split end Keith Pugh made sure it will be a long time before Alabama fans, and Virginia Tech too, forget his performance. The junior from Evergreen caught five passes for 148 yards and one touchdown on a homecoming day bathed in bright sunshine.

Pughs first catch, a 45-yard toss from quarterback Jeff Rutledge, was worth six points. It helped awaken an Alabama team and the 60,210 fans who sat in Bryant-Denny Stadium to watch the nations No. 3-ranked team score a 35-0 victory over the outmanned Gobblers. At 6-foot-l and 185-pounds, Pugh does not resemble Newsome in stature. Newsome was 63V4 and 210-pounds his senior season.

But at least four of Pughs five receptions bordered on the spectacular. In other words, they were very Ozzie Newsome-like. If you must draw a comparison, Pugh is cut from the mold of a Fred Biletnikoff, a Jimmy Orr, or a Lance A1 worth. Short on size, ail were big oh talent. And desire.

I learned a lot from watching Ozzie in practice and in games," Pugh said. You can learn a lot by watching the way a guy like Ozzie runs his routes. As for diving, well, Ive been doing that for awhile. I was just able to catch one today. Pughs touchdown reception came late in the second period.

It was his first catch of the day and presented the scoreboard with a 14-0 picture at halftime. The catch was a thing of beauty. Pugh was dogged by two Virginia Tech defenders every step of the way as he sprinted toward the end zone on a post pattern. At what seemed like the last possible second, he flung himself into a prone position in mid-air as the ball settled on the fingertips of his outstretched hands While praising Pughs effort, you cannot overlook the man who threw the pass Rutledge. With Pugh sandwiched by two VPI defenders, had the pass been in any other spot (See Pugh, page B-2) Houston shocks Arkansas 20-9 HOUSTON (AP) -Houstons rugged defense forced ninthranked Arkansas to settle for three first-half field goals and Randy Love punched in a 14-yard go-ahead touchdown in the third quarter to rally the 11th-ranked Cougars to a 20-9 Southwest Conference victory Saturday night.

Houstons victory, coupled with Texas 22-3 victory over Southern Methodist, kept the Cougars and Longhorns tied for the SWC lead with 4-0 records. Arkansas, losing for the second straight week, dropped to a 1-2 SWC record. Arkansas would have had the game under control at halftime had it not been for the Cougar defense, which stopped Arkansas drives at the Houston 3, 25 and 10 yard lines, forcing field goals of 27, 42 and 27 yards by Ismael Ordonez. The Cougars, now 6-1 for the season, pulled to a 9-7 halftime deficit on a one-yard run by Love and took the lead for good with 2:03 left in the third quarter on his 14-yard run. Then on the next-to-last play of the third quarter, Arkansas quarterback Ron Calcagni fumbled for the first turnover in the game and Houstons James Wilson recovered at the Hog 34.

Nine plays later, Houston quarterback Danny Davis completed a four-yard pass to Willis Adams to extend the Cougar lead to 20-9 with 11:31 left to play. Things weren't looking By JOHNNY HASLAM Auburn Correspondent AUBURN It wasn't very pretty.

Not nearly as pretty as homecoming queen Claudia Thomasson and her court of four Auburn coeds, but for the Auburn Tigers, it was a win nonetheless, and a big one at home over Wake Forest 21-7. The victory was especially big for the coaches and players as the Tigers now must head into murderers row', facing Florida, Mississippi State, Georgia and Alabama. For the Auburn fans who were mumbling bad things about the Tigers the week before, the win also mellowed things over And finally, it broke the Jordan-Hare jinx, winning before the home Rebel rally downs Vandy Tennessee mistakes contributed to four of the Bulldogs' five touchdowns. Mississippi State scored on its first possession, taking the kickoff and moving 80 yards in 5 plays. The key play was a 66 yard scamper by tailback James Jones who took a pitchout from Marler and skipped along the sideline to the 2 to set up the scoring play Less than 7 minutes later, Tennessee quarterback David Rudder pitched to freshman tailback James Berry who promptly fumbled.

Bulldog linebacker Johnny Cooks covered the ball on the UT 35. It took only one play a Marler to Mardye McDole pass and Mississippi State was leading 14-0. A blocked punt early in the second quarter gave the Bulldogs the bah on the Tennessee 39. Seve plays later Marler hit Len Copeland for another Bulldog touchdown.
