SUNDAY, OCTOBER 10, 1971-THE SELMA TIMES-JOURNAL-13 McNally Hurls 3-Hitter Rettenmund Ind Homers O's Over Bucs In Opener BALTIMORE (AP) We're strictly said Baltimore manager Earl Weaver, but he said it after his Orioles had behaved in a super-human manner Saturday, humbling Pittsburgh the opening game of the World Series behind Merv Rettenmund's threerun homer and Dave McNally's three-hit pitching. Frank Robinson and Don Buford also homered in a display of Baltimore power that sent controversial Pirate starter Dock Ellis to an early shower and left a sellout crowd of 229 pleased at the continuation of the Orioles' amazing seasonending winning streak. Rettenmund picked one of Ellis' pitches in the third inning for his three-run producing a 4-3 Baltimore' lead that McNally never surrendered. The southpaw ace settled down after a shaky start and methodically mowed down the Pirates' powers hitters. The victory was Baltimore's 15th in a row, covering the last 11 games of the regular season, three playoff games and this World Series opener.

Shaken for three unearned runs in the second inning when the usually flawless fielding Orioles made two errors, McNally was touched for his third and final hit in the third inning, then retired 19 men in order before Manny Sanguillen Auburn Pressed To Record 27-14 Victory OverS. Miss AUBURN, Ala. Sullivan come through in the clutch Saturday with three touchdown passes to give fourth-ranked Auburn a shaky 27-14 football victory over an upset-minded Southern Mississippi team that led 14-7 at halftime. Terry Beasley, the other half of Auburn's famed Pat and Terry, Show, equaled his own record with 11 pass completions which accounted for 100 yards and one touchdown. Sullivan hit his receivers 23 times out of 39 and picked up 238 yards, most of it in the second half.

The estimated 42,000, mostly fans who came to see another passing exhibition got what they wanted from Sullivan but had to watch another display almost as spectacular from Southern's quarterback, Rick Donegan, who. completed 12 passes in a row in directing the Southerners to their two touchdowns in the second period. Donegan picked up 127 yards in the air in the two scoring drives. Auburn, mindful that one of Its big weaknesses is the absence of a strong running game, tried to defeat Southern on the ground in the first half but got nowhere and when the Tigers returned after the intermission Sullivan went immediately to work on the does best, throwing the football. He threw one scoring pass to Robby Robinett from one yard out, another for 20-yards to Dick Schmalz, and the final touchdown, for one-yard, to Beasley.

Auburn had trouble all day with the stingy Southern defense and twice in the game Auburn almost ran out of downs before Tulane Drops North Carolina CHAPEL HILL, N.C.-Mike Walker threw four touchdown passes and Coleman Dupre returned a kickoff 100 yards for a touchedown as Tulane scored a 37-29 upset victory over North Carolina Saturday. A crowd of 39,500 saw Walker rifle first half touchdown passes of 65, 26, 56 and 38 yards, two of them to Steve Barrios. Then, in the final quarter Dupre turned in his sensational run as the Tar Heels were knocked from the unbeaten ranks after four victories. Sanguillen then bounced to shortstop Mark Belanger, who tried to cut down Robertson heading for third. But his throw hit Robertson and rolled into the Baltimore dugout, enabling the Pirate first baseman to race home with the game's first run. McNally then threw out Jose Pagan as Sanguillen took third. But when Jackie: Hernandez bunted in front of the plate, McNally couldn't get Sanguillen coming home and catcher Ellie Hendricks let the throw get by him. That enabled Hernandez to reach second and, after Ellis struck out, Hernandez raced home with the third on a single by Dave -the only Pirate hit of the inning.

(AP) Livingston University's newly installed Wishbone offense proved effective here Saturday as the Tigers piled up 307 yards in a convincing 28-3 victory over Samford's Bulldogs. Costly mistakes proved fatal to the Bulldogs, and penalties hindered their offensive drives.

Livingston Quarterback Clemitt Spruiell passed 31 times for 154 yards and two touchdowns and Johnny Mahaffery, the hero of the Jacksonville State stunner, caught three of them for 106 yards and a touchdown. The Tigers scored first and completely dominated the game. Samford's only score came on a 28-yard field goal by Bill Hawkins. He flipped scoring strikes of 37 and 9 yards to Barry Smith and Mike Glass, a junior tight end from Tampa who snagged his first Seminole touchdown. The Seminoles set up Huff's passing with a punishing running attack that hammered the Bulldog middle for repeated long gainers in the second half.

failed to gain leaving Auburn with a fourth down and a half a foot away from the goal line. Another Auburn scoring trip fell short when, with fourth and six, Sullivan hit Beasley with a two-yard pass. The Tigers were called from illegal procedure but the Southerners declind the penalty and took the ball. Both of Southern's touchdowns were scored by Doyle Orange on runs of one-yard. Auburn tied the game early in the third period after Sullivan had moved his team 64- yards mostly on passes to Robinett and Beasley and then went ahead laer in the quarter when Schmalz caught the 20- yarder.

It was a sophomore defensive tackle, Benny Sivley, who sewed it up, in the final period by intercepting a pass from Donegan on Southern's 42 and running it all the way back to the five. Again Auburn had trouble going the last two yards, but a pass interference penalty against Southern gave the Tigers a first down on the one. And then Sullivan threw the final scoring pass to Beasley.
