SUNDAY, David Hughes blocked an early Chattanooga punt and Roger Mitchell picked it up and stepped four yards for the score. A 36-yard field goal by Roger Pruett early in the next period followed a 39- yard punt return by David Langner. Bruce Evans blocked a punt by Chattanooga's David Lee shortly afterwards and McKinney sped 63 yards to the eight, with a penalty putting it on the four. Sullivan Walker ran it in from the three. McKinney again put the ball on the four in the third period by picking off a pass by Mickey Brokas and running past, around and over Mosccasins.

(AP) Triggered by a 100-yard kickoff return by halfback Willie Shelby, Alabama overcame a surprising Kentucky lead for a 28-14 Southeastern Conference football victory Saturday. The underdog Wildcats had built a 14-0 halftime lead, but after Shelby ran back the kickoff opening the second half to put the fourth-ranked Crimson Tide on the board Alabama completely dominated the rest of the game. No. 1 USC Destroys Tech 23-6 ATLANTA (AP)-Southern California's slippery Lynn Swann scored two first half topranked a touchdowns in the pleading methodical 23-6 triumph over inspired Georgia Tech Saturday and ran their unbeaten college football streak to 19 games. It was also the Trojans' 14th consecutive victory and their second straight of the 1973 season.

The tough Tech defense, led by linebacker Witt Wisman, held highly-touted Trojan running back Anthony Davis to a mere 24 yards in 12 carries in the opening half. Southern Cal took a 14-3 halftime edge on the strength of Swann's touchdowns while Tech received a 40-yard field goal from Cam Bonifay. Quarterback Pat Haden of Southern Cal connected for his second scoring toss or the game with 3:09 to play, hitting John McKay on a 15- yard TD strike for some added insurance. Earlier, Chris Limahelu booted a 20-yard field goal for the Trojans other points. Bonifay added another 40- yarder early in the third period for Tech's other scoring.

Swann, a 6-foot, 170-pound senior flanker, opened 1 the scoring for Southern Cal's sputtering offensive machine by scampering 48 yards on a punt return with 1:06 remaining in the first period. He later snared Haden's 15- yard scoring toss in the end zone with only 17 seconds left in the half. Tech, stifled by the Trojans' stubborn defense led by AllAmerican Richard Wood, could muster only one threat in the opening half but, had to settle for Bonifay's three-pointer with 4:53 left. Those four-yard drives were the highlight for the Auburn attackers against a determined Chattanooga until Rick Neel gave them another chance with an interception and 29-yard return late in the game. Auburn cashed in again.

A defensive charge led by Rusty Deen, Bill Newton and Hughes threw Brokas for big losses and bottled up the Mock's running game. Walker was Auburn's leading rusher with 74 yards on 17 carries. The Tigers got only 199 yards total offense. But the defensive team rolled up 226 yards on returns. Brokas completed 17 of 38 passes for 144 yards for Chattanooga, but the Moccasins had a net loss of 29 yards on the ground.

Wade Watley and Randy Walls shared quarterbacking duties as Auburn tried to get an offense going. Walls finally succeeded against the tired losers for the final score. After Neel's interception, Walls' passes carried Auburn 22 yards to set up the final scoring run. Earlier in the series Darryl Slaughter -pinned Prattville with a 10-yard loss and the visitors got a half-thedistance penalty to put them near the goalline. Coach Frank Williamson applauded the efforts of his defense in the first half and felt they played well enough in the second half to make the big play and keep Prattville out of the end zone. The coach said everyone played well offensively, naming Buddy Cobb, Doug Brown, Virgil Jones, Greg Forte, Jeff Hubrich, Slaughter, Doug Ellis and Preskitt as well as quarterback Menifee, in addition to Edwards, who had 70 of Westside's 158 yards rushing, and Parnell. Defensively, Williamson pointed to Alfred Irby, Herbert Simmons, Parnell, Jared James and Arthur Kelly. Getting the ball with six minutes left on the clock, the Raiders utilized Edwards for four straight whacks in the line to gain 19 yards.

A play later he came back for six and three yards. A fumble lost six yards, but Menifee found Preskitt in position for the 44-yard pass that set up the lone score. Preskitt virtually took the ball away from the defender and but for a slip might have taken it all the way himself. Edwards hit for two yards to set up Parnell's blast from the one.
