So, Mike does the next best thing. He watches the action from his 711 Lapsley Street home near Byrd School and cradles his football. It's quite a football too. SPIRIT BUILDER The orange and white pigskin is the thing that buoys Mike's spirit for it bears some most cherished signatures and makes him the source of envy from his friends.

I visited Mike Friday to see his football and he had it carefully put away in his room, all wrapped and in a box. It was ready, for him to pull out Saturday as a good luck charm for his team, the Alabama Crimson Tide, played the Ole Miss Rebels. THOSE SIGNATURES Proudly he pointed out the signatures of Coach "Bear" Bryant and "best wishes on a speedy from, the famed head coach. But that wasn't the only name penned on the oval, but all over it were the signatures of Tide players. There was Johnny Musso, David Bailey, Scott Hunter and until they almost ran out of space.

PLAYED FOR WINNER Big for his age and wearing 14-year old clothes before he became ill, Mike played baseball for Coach Rex Waldrop's championship Cloverleaf team in Dixie Youth this past summer at Meadowview, but at times he didn't feel too well and would come home tired and want to sleep. Not long after the season was over his mother and grandmother took him to the doctor and his period of inactivity began. When school began Mike was unable to attend, but he busied himself at home when he felt well enough with painting as he was doing Friday afternoon and with his thoughts of football, making sure he knew where 1 the Alabama ball was at all times. HISTORY OF BALL The autographed ball became a reality oddly enough through the efforts of a basketball man. Mike's friends came up with the idea and then Dickie McKenzie contacted Alabama basketball Coach C.

M. Newton, one of his friends and Coach Newton immediately went to work and made the delivery. When Alabama captured a surprisingly easy 46-22 win over Florida last Saturday Crimson Tide fan Mike was sure his good luck ball had something to do with the change of fortune for his football heroes. And right by his side was that trusty football with his "friends" names on it. MIKE A WINNER The -battle Mike is waging against his illness is a courageous one and one which the able can apply to their physical feats to make them a winner.

Mike Davis is proving himself a winner every day. Good luck, Mike.
