TlMES-ADOCATE ESCOSD.DO CA MON OCTOBER 20 1980 D-3 CJoftGG and Quotfoc ttCjo CCnagoc-GuacuC Gacno youre only using running plays. Coryell on former Charger Bo Matthews, who gained S3 yards on 10 carries Id Lke to commend Bo Matthews. He really played his heart out and (Alvin) Garrett, too." Garrett, drafted on the ninth round by the Chargers last year before being released, returned seven kickoffs for 153 yards. Kellen Winslow on working with Charlie Joiner and John Jefferson Being able to play with Charlie and J.J. takes a lot of pressure off me.

Teams have to give one of us single coverage and its usually me. I dont mind it a bit being the third best receiver on the team if it means getting single coverage." Wide receiver coach Ernie Zampese on coaching such a fine group of receivers as the Chargers Talk about great coaching," he said sarcastically, Just having guys like that makes it easy. Theyre smart, versatile and so intelligent." The Chargers have now started a kangaroo court where players are fined small amounts for boner plays. The court is directed by the defensive secondary. The defensive backs wont have to contribute too much, assured Willie Buchanon.

Wilbur Young was fined $15 by the court yesterday for his three offsides. Asked what the team will do with all the money at the end of the season, said Mike Williams, "Have a heck of a party. John Maffei and Don Norcross New York Gknta coach Ray Pertina Our defense played well considering the young gays we have. But, you cant stop Dan Fouts. He may be the best quarterback there is.

Nobody can stop his offense, although we can try and make a few big plays and mkp them count. outs is smart and has great vision and r- timing. He doesnt have a great arm. He never has. But, he is a great field general.

Hes the key guy, the operator." Fouts completed 26 of 41 passes for a club record 44 yards against the Giants. The old record was 388 yards set last week by Fouts against Oakland. Fouts 444 yards ranks second in the NFL this season behind Richard Todds 447. The Jet quarter-. back had his big game against the San Francisco 49ers.

This was outs third 300-yard game of the season and the 14th of his career. Fouts has thrown for 832 yards in the last two games. outs on Qiarlie Joiner Hes got that something extra of always knowing where to go. He always finds the holes and is always where he is expected to be. We take pride in our passing game.

We think we can do Better than anybody, ever. Joiner caught 10 passes for 171 yards and a TD. The 10 catches is a personal high, breaking his previous best of nine. Joiners 171 yards is the most by a The Chargers rolled up 567 yards total offense the third highest in club history. The only games better were 610 yards against Boston in the AFL Championship Game on Jan.

5, 1964 and 581 against Denver on Dec. 20. 1968. The Chargers 37-point margin of victory was their biggest since beating the Buffalo Bills, 45-6, on Dec. 14, 1969.

That was the last game San Diego played as members of the AFL Coryell, summing up the game Things seem to come together at strange times. Cappy (John Cappel-letti) and (Chuck) Muncie werent able to practice during the week because they were sick yet both played well. Mike Thomas had three days practice but played practically the whole game. The pass blocking had to be great. Dan (Fouts) had time to pass and was on.

It was one of those things when everything Just seemed to work out well. Coryell on why he didnt take his regulars out earlier in the final period with his team already ahead, 34-7 I thought of it, but Im very hesitant at times. I probably should have. But footballs a silly game. Someone can score a touchdown, get an onside kick and score another one in a hurry.

Im not going to take any chances at all losing a ballgame after hopefully weve won it. Near the end of the game we were trying to control the clock and pass only when we had to. The quarterback isnt in any particular danger when Charger receiver since Gary Garrison gamed 188 against the New York Jets in 1969. Joiners 10 catches are the most by a Charger receiver since Garrison caught 10 against Denver in 1972. Joiner now has 35 receptions for 565 yards this season and 389 career receptions to rank fifth among active NFL receivers.

John Jefferson on his performance If our line gives Fouts enough time to get the pass off, he can complete it every time. The Giants played a drop back xone. We like to come up against a team that does that. It is a lot easier. Jefferson caught five passes for 107 yards yesterday and Winslow had six catches for 102 to go along with Joiners 10 and 171.

That marks only the second time since 1968 that a team has had three receivers with 100 or more yards in a game. Oddly, Green Bays trio of Eddie Lee Ivery (11 for 128), Paul Coffman (nine for 109) and Aundra Thompson (seven for 102) did it last week in a 14-14 tie with Tampa Bay. Jefferson now has 14 games in which he has caught passes for 100 or more yards. Joiner has 13. Charger running back Chuck Muncie, who had nine carries for 56 yards and caught a pass for 14 more I have the offense down well.

If I would not have been sick (missing several days of practice), I would have gotten more playing time. There were a lot of great blocks today. The whole offensive line did a heckuva Job." Ageless Joiner, at age 33, having time of his life the time. I cant afford to be overanxious and throw things off. Yesterday, Fouts and Joiner were communicating well as Joiner had his best day in the NFL But, Charlie could have had more if a fourth quarter pass had been called correctly by the officials.

Im happy with what I finished with," Joiner said, but I coulda had more. I caught the ball clean and then dropped it as I went out of bounds (TV replays bear out Joiners claim). Thats the way things go. I was working against a rookie today and it was tough on him. Heck, our pass offense is tough on anyone, but its especially tough on a rookie.

He tried to get a little rough (Dennis was called for a personal foul in the third quarter after a Joiner catch), but that type of thing happens. You have to shrug it off and keep playing. How long Joiner will keep playing is a question mark. The Chargers talked him out of retirement after last season and theyve stocked up on young, talented wide receivers (Smith, Floyd and Billy Brooks, who is currently on the injured reserve list) Just in case Charlie calls it quits after this season. Not even Joiner knows if 80 will be his last season.

If hes having enough fun, the young guys might have to wait another year to get more tosses yesterday, racking up 444 yards and three scores in the process. In the last four years, Dan Fouts has become a great coverage reader, Joiner said. Before that, he wasnt too good, but he listens and learns. He talks with the coaches and he talks with the receivers. Before the ball is snapped, he knows and we know where the ball is going by the way the defense is lined up.

We dont have to check off at the line of scrimmage or call a lot of audi-bles. We just read the defense and take what it gives us. We study films and take advantage of what we see. Teams dont change things, so we have a pretty good idea of what areas well attack and Id say were successful 95 percent of the time in our reads of the defense. Today, New York was giving us the sideline routes when they were in their nickel (five-deep) defense.

We knew that and we knew that Just a little movement on our part would confuse them. Its very tough to stop us because I think Dan Fouts is unstoppable. Teams try to take the pass away from us, but they cant. Oakland tried last week and we got 388 yards. The only way to stop us is to blitz, but we scored two TDs against Oakland when they blitzed.

The biggest thing for us is communication. I never try to over do it. Dan expects me to do the same things all JOHN MAFFEI T-A Sports Editor SAN DIEGO At 33, Charlie Joiner might be an old man as far as professional football is concerned, but the past two seasons with the Chargers have taught the veteran wide receiver that its never too late to have fun. Yesterday, in a 44-7 rout of the New York Giants, Joiner had a great time. Working against rookie comerback Mike Dennis, Joiner had the time of his life, catching a career high 10 passes for 171 yards and a TD as the Chargers rolled up 465 yards passing and 567 total yards against the hapless Giants.

This offense is more wide open than any Ive ever been involved with, Joiner said after the game. Our receivers (John Jefferson, Kellen Winslow, Ron Smith and John Floyd) make it tough on defenses, but it sure is fun for us. Heck, Ive been in the league 12 seasons and this is the most fun Ive ever had playing football. I honestly think we can do better than this, though. This team hasnt hit its potential.

Sure we had a great game, but I think were capable of 400 and 500 yard games pretty consistently. The reasons for Joiners optimism are his ability, the ability of his fellow receivers and the faith they have in quarterback Dan Fouts. It rolled into the end zone and linebacker Mike Hegman pounced on it for the score. Rafael Septien kicked a 33-yard field goal for Dallas in the second period.

All but two of the yards came in the ah1, with John Cappelletti getting the honors for the second time from the one. The Chargers first four scoring series covered 275 yards, only 24 of which came on the ground, so freely did Fouts and Co. move through the air. Wide receiver coach Ernie Zampese explained why advancing the football via the pass was so easy.

The Giants play primarily one coverage because theyre so young (28 of their 45 players are first- or second-year men), said Zampese. If you know what kind of coverage theyre going to be in you can fit your routes to take advantage of it. Fouts, equally adept at maintaining high team morale as he is at reading defensive secondaries, gave his offensive friends credit for his big afternoon. I had excellent protection, which is really the key to any passing attack, said Fouts. And then when you have guys like Joiner, Jefferson and Winslow on hand at the other end defenses dont know who to cover.

Now the Chargers can concentrate on the game that so many feared they were already concentrating on, the Dallas Cowboys, next Sunday night. That should be one of the best tele- vised games of the year, said Jefferson, he being the one with the dramatic flair. We should put a lot of balls in the' air in that one. He was not exactly revealing any deep dark secrets. CHARGER NOTES The Chargers travel to Dallas this week for a nationally televised game against the Cowboys in Texas Stadium.

CoryeU hates to play a team, especially a good team, the week after that team has been beaten. Chargers Dan Audick played well at offensive tackle yesterday as a replacement for the injured Rass Washington.

Before the game, however, the Chargers revealed that they were trying to sign Vernon Holland, a veteran offensive tackle but couldnt find him. The reason was the Giants bad him stashed away and signed him before the' game. defensive tackle Louie etcher1 sat out yesterdays game with a hyper-extended knee. He expected to be back in the lineup for the Dallas game. Scott and scored once himself, leading Chicago over the first place Detroit Lions.

Theismans four-yard scoring toss to Hannon with only 2:32 gone in the first quarter was the first TD the Redskins have scored at home in three games this vear. Browns 26, Packers 21 Cleveland quarterback Brian Sipe connected with wide receiver Dave Logan on a 46-yard touchdown pass with 16 seconds to play, sparking the Browns over Green Bay. By Associated Press The Philadelphia Eagles were Just going for a field goal, hoping to break a 10-10 tie, when quarterback Ron Jaworski noticed something.

Ron saw their double coverage on Harold Carmichael and realized he had enough time to see (Charles) Smith coming over, Eagles coach Dick Vermeil said. Instead of a possible field goal attempt, Jaworski connected with Smith for a 15-yard touchdown and a 17-10 National Football League victory over the Dallas Cowboys yesterday. The victory gave the Eagles a one-game lead in the National Conferences Eastern Division with a 6-1 record. Dallas dropped to 5-2. Not too many people can stick it in between people like Ron did on that play, Vermeil said.

He showed tremendous poise. Smith, who scored with 4:27 remaining in the game, called it the biggest play Eve ever made. I didnt see the defensive back on the play, said Smith. I just knew where I was supposed to be. I saw Ron looking at me and he really drilled it.

The winning score came three plays after middle guard Charlie Johnson intercepted a pass by Dallas quarterback Danny White. The ball was tipped by linebacker John Bunting and Johnson made a diving catch. I saw their backs coming out, Johnson said. And I knew White was under pressure to get rid of it. I was just in the right spot when J.B.

Jaworski, who completed 13 of 25 passes for 214 yards, gave the Eagles their other touchdown in Philadelphias 10-point second quarter when he hit Carmichael on a five-yard pass. Philadelphias other points came on Tony Franklins 35-yard field goal. penter ran 10 yards for another score as Houston stopped Tampa Bay. The victory ended a two-game losing streak for Houston, 4-3.

Tampa Bay is 2-4-1. Stabler completed his first nine passes of the game and hit 10 of 12 tosses as the Oilers scored points on three of their four first half possessions. Dolphins 17, Bills 14 Buffalo rookie running back Joe Cribbs fumbled three times, setting up all of Miamis scoring as the Dolphins snapped a two-game losing streak. Cribbs, the AFCs leading rusher, was held to 41 yards on 14 carries and his fumbles set up both Miami touchdowns and a 23-yard field goal by Uwe von Schamann.
