TIMES-ADVOCATE, Escondido, Aviation By Tracey Weddleton Times-Advocate LAKE SAN MARCOS Eugene S. Kropf, nationally known aviation historian who worked for the Federal Aviation Administration before retiring in 1977, died Sept. 10 at a local hospital. He was 73. Mr.

Kropf was born in Madison, and had lived in Lake San Marcos since 1977 and in California for 29 years. He was an aviation historian and consultant who, among many other awards, was most recently awarded the Crown Circle award by the National Congress on Aerospace Education in 1980. He had also been a faculty member with the aviation program at Palomar College in San Marcos since 1978. Mr. Kropf received his bachelor of science degree in 1940 from Parks College, the aviation school of St.

Louis University. He had been an instructor in the U.S. Army Air Corps Primary Pilot Training Program during World War II. In 1945, Mr. Kropf was the first director of the Aeronautical Administration Department at Parks College, and was later named assistant to the dean there.

He had also been the college's director of the flight program. In 1957, Mr. Kropf joined the Federal Aviation Administration (then known as the Civil Aeronautics Administration). Barbara Abels, public affairs officer for the Western Pacific Region of the Federal Aviation Administration in Los Angeles, worked with Mr. Kropf for 12 years before he retired.

Pitre was a member of the Escondido Elks Lodge for 18 years and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife, Blanche; daughter Denise Pitre of Escondido; and mother Margaret Petri of Escondido. Private services were held. Alhiser-Wilson Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Gladys E. Murphy FALLBROOK Gladys E. Murphy, a homemaker, died Sept. 9 at Tri-City Medical Center. She was 81.

She was born in Brownell, and had lived in Fallbrook for 19 years. She was previously from the Los Angeles area. Mrs. Murphy had been a Sunday School teacher and was involved with the Women's Society of Inglewood. Survivors include her husband, Charles; daughter Diane Carlafly of Westminster; brother Ben Davis of Lakewood; and sister Hazel Davis of San Fernardo Valley.

He had been the president of the International Aviation Fraternity, Alpha Eta Rho and, at the time of his death, he was chairman of the board. Mr. Kropf had received many awards including the Federal Aviation Administration's Meritorious Service award, and in 1978, was inducted into the National Hall of Honor by the American Society for dead at 73 Aerospace Education. Survivors include his wife, Gertrude M. Kropf; son Fred and his wife, Linda Kropf of Sacramento; and grandchildren Stacey and Kelly Kropf of Sacramento.
