Corso is trying to crack Big Ten's Big Two' TYT" 4 A Sitting down in the cubicle at a hastily assembled gathering of newsmen, Lee Corso never skipped a beat when someone sat in a cubicle on the other side of a curtain. Bless me, father, for I have sinned, Corso deadpanned. I have looked at too much film of BYU. Of course, the gathering broke up. with laughter.

Corso is always on stage, always ready to expose his wit whenever possible. And that comes in mighty handy in his line of work. Coaching football in the Big Ten at a school other than Ohio State or Michigan, the two annual combatants for the championship, can be hazardous to your health. Only Bo (Schembechler of Michigan) and I are left from when I started at Indiana, laughed Corso, who always seems to be at least smiling. I keep a photograph in my wallet of that first group of coaches just as a reminder.

At Indiana, football has never reached the circle of elite, even in its own conference, because of The Big Two. The Hoosiers have been lowly members of the Little Eight for almost a century. However, all that might be changing, and quicker than anyone realized, too. From a 4-7 record a year ago, Indiana fashioned a 7-4 mark this fall with losses to only Michigan, Ohio State, Purdue and Colorado. Those first three teams are nationally-ranked clubs.

You could be out of work playing that trio every season. Once, against a highly-regarded Buckeye squad, the Hoosiers jumped on top, 7-6. Corso immediately called timeout, took his entire team down to the scoreboard end of the field and had a team picture taken showing Indiana leading. Ohio State eventually romped that day. But thats vintage Corso.

No football team has won the Big Ten title in the past 18 years who has both Ohio State and Michigan on their schedule, pointed out Corso. We have to play them both every year. Maybe thats why I wear this St. Christopher A lot of people call him Mr. Christopher, but no one alive knows for sure and I dont want to take a chance and anger anyone else.

Tomorrow night is yet another severe challenge to Corsos Hoosiers in the form of offen-sively-powerful Brigham Young University, in the second annual Holiday Bowl at San Diego The Hoosiers, making their first bowl appearance since losing the Rose Bowl in 1967 and only their second bowl trip in 95 years, must not only deal with Cougar quarterback Marc Wilson and the explosive offense, but the BYU defense has etched quite an impression in Corsos mind. They run stuff weve never seen in the Big Ten, he stated. Im glad I saw the Chargers-Denver game because that pro style defense is what BYU runs. I took plenty of notes, too. This has been, by far, Indianas best season Please see D-5, Col.

Clippers' Smith in a new role with his new team I jo WANTS CLIPPERS' BOBBY SMITH (7) The only other teams to have more than one player on the first team are San Diego, Los Angeles and St. Louis with two apiece. The Chargers representatives are quarterback Fouts, who set a new NFL record in 79 for yards passing in a season with 4,082, and second-year wide receiver John Jefferson; defensive end Jack Youngblood and defensive tackle Larry Brooks are the Rams and rookie running back Ottis Anderson and guard Bob Young are the Cardinals. Others named to the AP first team are: On offense, tight end Dave Casper of Oakland, tackle Marvin Powell of the New York Jets and guard John Hannah of New England, On defense, end Lee Roy Selmon of Tampa Bay, tackle Randy White of Dallas and comerbacks Lemar Parrish of Washington and Louis Wright of Denver.

The specialists, punter Dave Jennings of the New York Giants and kick-returner Tony Nathan of Miami. By ARMEN KETEYIAN T-A Sports Writer SAN DIEGO Hes always been a scorer. His nickname says as much. Guys in the National Basketball Association who crash the boards and battle for rebounds are called Truck, Bad News or Trouble. But men with artists touch, players with soft, arching rainbow jumpers find themselves called Pistol or Ice Bobby Smith is one such man with one such name.

For 10 NBA seasons, Bingos calling card has been the jump shot, and he can still leave that card in the most unexpected of places the comer, top of the key or off a fast break pass. The only thing that remains constant about Bingos jumper, is that 45 percent of the time it ends up in the basket. Teams have always used me as a scorer, said Smith, 33, a proven small forward who came to the San Diego Clippers Oct. 27 from the Cleveland Cavaliers for a 1980 third round draft choice and future considerations. But the 6-foot-6 Smith is a scorer no more.

Not under Clipper coach Gene Shues current game plan anyway. Bobby Bingo Smith has now become a shooter. Theres a difference, judged Smith, who has taken nearly 10,000 shots to score 10,000 points in his career. A scorer gets his 20-25 points every night and his shooting percentage doesnt matter. He can shoot 41 or 42 percent and as long as he gets Please see D-5, CoL 1 TO CRACK THE 'BIG TWO' ll I Photo by Ron Haase I LISTENS TO COACH GENE SHUE JOHN JEFFERSON All-Pro receiver QB's are a contrast in styles BY JOHN MAFFEI T-A Sports Editor SAN DIEGO It will be a major contrast in styles when the two opposing quarterbacks bring their teams up to the line of scrimmage in tomorrow nights Holiday Bowl game iri San Diego Stadium.

BYUs Marc Wilson is the leader of an undefeated (11-0) team that is ranked ninth in the country. Hes completed 250 of 427 passes for 3,720 yards and 29 touchdowns this season and has been named to five All-America teams. The 6-foot-5 bomber from Seattle is so talented that he got 52 first place votes and finished third in the Heisman Trophy balloting behind Charles White of USC and Billy Sims of Oklahoma. Wilson, a senior, is sure to be picked high in the NFL drfat. On the other side of the field, Indianas Tim Clifford hasnt quite cracked the national spotlight, but he has made his name known in the Midwest.

The 6-1, junior from Cincinnati led his team to to a 7-4 record and in the process was named second team All-Big Ten, beating out the much-publicized Mark Herrmann of Purdue. Tackle Leon Gray, running back Campbell, outside linebacker Robert Brazile, free safety Mike Reinfeldt and place-kicker Toni Fritsch represent the Oilers. The Steelers on the squad are wide receiver John Stall-worth, center Mike Webster, outside linebacker Jack Ham, middle linebacker Jack Lambert and strong safety Donnie Shell.

In all, 17 of the 25 first-team players named Wednesday come from the AFC, a 68 percent majority remarkably close to the AFCs regular-season domination of the National Conference. The AFC won 36 of 52 games, a 69 percent record. Two other Oilers defensive end Elvin Bethea and defensive tackle Curley Culp and Steeler corner-back Mel Blount also were named to the second team by the nationwide panel of 84 sports writers. another award, Im proud and pleased for the kid but Im damn sure not surprised, coach Bum Phillips said of Campbell. He has done for us everything you could ask him to do, whether its carry the ball 35 times or be the decoy and carry it 10.

The figures bear out Phillips lavish praise. Campbell erupted for 134 yards last Sunday to finish the season with 1,697 yards (he had 1,450 as a rookie) and become only the third player in NFL history to win the rushing title in each of his first two seasons, matching a feat by Jim Brown in 1957-58 and Bill Paschal in 1943-44. Campbell finished 87 yards ahead of Chicagos Walter Payton for the 1979 rushing title. Campbell gained 100 or more yards in seven successive games this year, breaking the record of six shared by Brown (1958) and Franco Harris (1972). Eleven times he rushed for at least 100 yards, matching Simpsons 1973 mark.

And 19 times he scored a rushing touchdown, tying Jim Taylors 1962 record. NEW YORK (AP) Earl Campbell of the Houston was named The National Football Leagues Offensive Player of the Year today by The Associated Press for the second straight season. It was his second post-season honor on Tuesday he was named the NFLs Most Valuable Player by The AP and also gave Campbell consecutive seasons with double honors. Last year he was also chosen Offensive Rookie of the Year. In balloting by a nationwide panel of 84 sports writers and sports broadcasters, three from each NFL city, Campbell edged San Diego Chargers quarterback Dan Fouts 39 votes to 34.

Brian Sipe, quarterback of the Cleveland Browns, received three votes, quarterbacks Roger Staubach and Jim Zorn and rookie running back Ottis Anderson of St. Louis received two apiece and wide receiver Steve Largent of Seattle and guard John Hannah of New England each received one vote. Every time I hear that hes won.
