tmes-3)ournaI SportS SECTION SUNDAY. APRIL Id. 1979 Sneed holds 5 stroke lead hasnt won a lot and he hasnt won in the majors, but if he can keep this up, hell run away from everyone else. But, he said, that isnt necessarily so. If he should slip, well, Im only 3 shots out of second place, Nicklaus said.

If I shoot 65 I could go past everybody. Watson agreed. For me to Win, Id have to have an exceptional round and hed have to play poorly, Tom said. Hes swinging the club very well, playing very well. I dont expect him to collapse Watson, shaken a bit after a shot hit a woman spectator in the mouth, managed a 70 and (See SNEED, Page B-2) AUGUSTA, Ga.

(AP) Ed Sneed, calm and composed under the greatest stress of his golfing life, strode through bright southern sunshine to a 3under-par 69 and established a commanding 5-shot lead Saturday in the 43rd Masters. Sneed, a journeyman pro who has won three times in 11 years on the tour, watched in something approaching detached interest as his challengers either failed to make a major move or fell victim to the subtle tests of the famed Augusta National Golf Club. While Tom Watson, the man deemed most likely to win this event, had his adventures on the back-side par 5s; while mighty Jack it bogey to bogey to watery double bogey, Sneed quietly put together a 54-hole total of 204, a distant 12 shots under par and took control. What it amounts to, said Nicklaus, if Ed plays well tomorrow, I cant catch him. Neither can anyone else.

If he plays well, he wins. Its that simple. Eds a good player. He McLendon shot strikes wife AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) Mac McLendon told his wife, Joan, after the opening round of the 43rd Masters Golf Tournament that he was playing so bad Im afraid I might hit somebody.

He did, and ironically it was Joan. It happened on the first hole in Fridays second round when one of his shots went astray. McLendon rushed to the area and saw his wife lying unconscious on the ground after being struck just below the shoulder. She was taken by medics to a local hospital for X-rays, which were negative, and returned to Augusta National in time to rejoin her husband on the eighth hole A shaken McLendon finished the round with a 77, missing the 36-hole cut with a 151 Victor Galindez defeats Rossmon TO THE VICTOR BELONGS THE SPOILS-The University of Alabama Crimson Tide football team made Saturday an afternoon of football and praise at Bryant-Denny Stadium on the Tuscaloosa campus. Head coach and athletic director Paul W.

Bear" Bryant and his Bama football team gathered for the annual A-Day football game that is the highlight of spring football practice. But the Tide also gathered to receive praise and trophies for their National Championship efforts of the 1978 season. The Asociated Press, which voted the Crimson Tide as the number one football team in the nation last season, was represented by college football editor Herschel Nissenson who presented Byant and university President Dr. David Matthews with the AP's National Championship Trophy. Nissenson told the crowd at Bryant-Denny Stadium that the AP retires a championship trophy once a school wins the national crown three times.

The trophy used Saturday afternoon was the original AP trophy which was to be given permanantly to Alabama. I would have brought last year's trophy down here today to present to you but I didn't think you would want the same trophy that Notre Dame had," Nissenson said with a smile. Nissenson informed the crowd that the Associated Press was having a new trophy made and after it was obtained from the jewelers it would be taken to Tuscaloosa. The AP writer also said he hoped to be around to see Bryant retire a second AP trophy and to see Bryant pass Amos Alonzo Stagg's all-time winning record. The remarks brought loud cheering from the stands.

Stagg is currently the record holder as the winningest coach In college football history. Bryant is second on that list and has said he would like to stay in coaching long enough to pass Stagg's mark. Also on hand far the pre-A-Day game festivities was Jimmy McDowell of the MacArthur Bowl Committee. The MacArthur Bowl is also a trophy which represents the nation's top college football team. The MacArthur Foundation, associated with the College Football Hall of Fame, was the first organization to declare Alabama as the 1978 National Champions.

The original trophy remains at the Hall of Fame site but Bryant was presented a plaque by McDowell that Inscribed the Crimson Tide as the king's of college football and was decorated with an engraved drawing of the original trophy. In the top photo, Bryant and Nissenson admire the AP trophy while McDowell, Bryant and Dr. Matthews admire the MacArthur plaque in the photo at right. (Times-Journal photos by Tommy Hicks) From the fourth round on, Galindez who lost the title to Rossman when he was stopped on cuts in the 13th round last Sept 15 was in charge of the fight. In the fifth round, Galindez shook Rossman on three occasions with rights after left hooks.

Galindez suffered a cut above his right eye, but this time the cut didnt bother him. In the seventh round, Galindez, who weighed 174, the same as Rossman, hurt the defending champion from Turnersville, with a hook that turned him around Galindez followed with two smashing rights to the head and then had the best of a toe-to-toe exchange that lasted about 20 seconds. Three smashing hooks just before the bell had Rossman in trouble in the eighth, and then Galindez had him in real trouble in the ninth. In that round, two ripping hooks slashed a cut over Rossmans right eye at about the midway point Rossman fought back for the remainder of the round, but Galindez hurt him on at least two occasions A dejected Rossman, making his second defense of the 175-pound title, said: Im not sure when it (the injury) happened. In the sixth or seventh round I think I hit him with a right hand and I felt it throb.

I tried to keep going, take a chance with the pain. NEW ORLEANS (AP) Rugged Victor Galindez ripped Mike Rossman with left uppercuts to the head and regained the World Boxing Association light-heavyweight championship Saturday when Rossman was unable to answer the bell for the 10th round because of an injured right hand. Promoter Bob Arum said Rossman had broken the hand. Referee Stanley Christodoulou of South Africa said Rossmans corner asked him to stop the fight. It goes into the books as a lOth-round knockout for Galindez, and was a sudden end to a wild fight which saw Rossmans brother throw punches at Galindez after the fourth round.

In the fourth round, Galindez hurt Rossman with a right hand and had him in trouble at the bell. When the bell sounded, the Argentine kept on punching, and after being sent to his corner by the referee, Rossmans brother Andy dashed across the ring, shouted at Galindez and shook his fist at him. Galindez shook his right hand at the youth, then cuffed him with two left hands as cornermen for both fighters jumped into the ring The referee made no penalty against either fighter. Wallace Greg Thrash watching from bleachers By TOMMY HICKS Times-Joumal Sports Editor All Greg Thrash wanted was a hamburger. What he got, instead, was the end of his 1979 baseball season Thrash, a 19-year old a member of the George C.

Wallace State Community College team, had stopped off at a Montgomery hamburger restaurant with a friend to grab a bite to eat before heading home It was Saturday night, March 17, a night that Thrash will never forget. As he paid for his order and prepared to leave, the incident that would halt his current baseball season began I got my order and I was leaving when I bumped into this guy behind me," Thrash explained I said excuse me but all the guy did was ask me if I had a problem. Thrash said that was what led to the fight which saw him and the other youth fall through the restaurants plate glass window before trading punches. It ended when the other youth allegedly got a rifle from a car and now faces attempted murder charges in connection with the shooting of Thrash Thrash's father, Braxton Thrash, signed a warrant for the arrest of the youth Thrash was struck with a hollow point 22 caliber bullet It entered the back of his leg and exploded off the top of the bone, he said The bullet entered his leg as it was in the air (while running) and he fell to the ground without putting additional pressure on the limb Doctors suggested this prevented what could have been further, perhaps more complicated, damage to the leg "The doctors dont see any problems in the leg healing, the Robert Gee High School graduate said But now Thrash is wearing a cast on the leg and will be in that certain medical attire for about four more months lie has already been in the cast for three weeks He sat in the bleachers Thursday afternoon, watching his teammates play Bishop State, a position as difficult Ur him to accept as the incident that placed him in his current state of health It's about to kill me, he admitted. I can hardly stand sitting over here.

Thrash did play in a couple of games before the incident In fact, he had post ed aper feet, 2-0 pitching record and appeared to be headed for a good season He felt this season would be his best "My arm was sore last year but it felt real good this year," he said Kveirwith the sore arm, Thrash compiled a 6-2 slab- as a fn-shman hurler hr the Patriots He also had the confidence of his coach, Ixkhian Smallwood, toward his belief that he was on the threshold of a good season I was sure Greg was going to have a good season, Smallwood said. He had more zip on the ball than he -iid last year and he had worked very hard during the offseason, throwing and working with the weight program. He was our leader in the pitching department and lie was our only left-handed pitcher," Smallwood said. His pitching is certainly missed. But the thing we miss most about him is his competitive attitude," Smallwood continued.

He wouldnt let us (the team) get down. He kept the team spirit going all the time. "Greg was working hard to go to a major college and I believe he would have gotten a scholarship, the coach said Smallwood said that a couple of schools still are interested in Thrashs services and are keeping an eye on his recovery. Smallwood was asked if a hardship case could be filed with the National Junior College Athletic Association office in hopes of making Thrash eligible to pitch for the Patriots next year, considering his circumstances The Wallace coach said that although Thrash would probably be given eligability from the NJCAA in Hutchingson, Kan it might not be a good route for Thrash to travel academically Smallwood said that Thrash has kept up his studies and if he remained at Wallace next season, in order to play baseball, he would go over his 96 quarter hours limit and when he transfered to another school he would probably lose many of those hours in transfering credits. Thrash himself said that he had thought about the situation and did not know at this time which direction he would choose to follow Smallwood said that he had talked with Thrash about it briefly and that the two would get together at the end of the season and discuss the possibilities The Montgomery native missed the first two weeks of the quarter because of the injury but said that he has caught up with the missed work and is now back at the school continuing his studies He also continues to keep up with the Patriots progress and wish that he could be a part of it.

Already the Patriots have bested the 22 wins of last season which was the best showing of any Wallace team prior to this year's edition For now. Thrash will have to be content with the role of cheerleader while he dreams of returning to the mound But don't bo surprised if he gives up hamburgers grkg tiikasii watches Wallace action with greg tolar.
