TIMES-ADVOCATE, ESCONDIDO, OCTOBER 6, 1930 D-3 oftOG and QcjoGgg Opog GCaaFQGFG DODDo Gaao Kellen Winslow on his questionable fumble at the Buffalo 25 that thwarted San Diegos final drive and enabled Buffalo to run out the final 4:38 of the game: It was his (the officials) call. He called it the way he saw it and to the best of his conscious. I have no gripes about the call. Those things happen, especially in the NFL. Chuck Muncie on the game overall: I feel we kicked them all over the field in every way, offensively and defensively.

We beat them pretty bad, but we had a few bad breaks. Muncie on his performance, which included 10 carries for 37 yards, one pass reception for 12 yards and and four kickoff returns for 72 yards: I felt real good, Im very pleased with my performance. Ive got to admit I had a few butterflies, though. Muncie on the thunderous ovation he received when he was announced at the beginning of the game as the kickoff return man: It felt like homecoming. I thought the crowd at New Orleans was something else but these people are the best in the world.

The stadium stayed full to the end. It was really great. As I walked off the field a bunch of people yelled, Welcome home, Chuck. (Muncie played his collegiate football at the University of California.) Its a great feeling to have people welcome you home that way. Hal Stringert on his cousin Jim Hasletts holding tactics that enabled Rod Kush to break through and block one punt for a touchdown.

I said, Jim, you cant be holding knee and not one of thems a doctor. Dobler with a parting message for Don Coryell, who he used to play for when both of them were at St. Louis: Tell Coryell were even now for last year at New Orleans. The Chargers blanked the Saints, 35-0, in New Orleans last year, scoring all their points in the first half. Buffalo quarterback Joe Ferguson on the Chargers defensive line, which Sacked him five times: I was very Impressed with that defensive line.

We knew coming in that they would put quite a pass rush on. They did a super job. It was quite a task for our offensive line. They (the Chargers line) run so well. I dont think anybody can shut them out Theyve got good athletes over there.

In the previous four games Ferguson had been sacked just three times. This is proving to be quite a historic year for the Bills. In their season opener they beat Miami for the first time since November 1968, an NFL record covering 20 games. Yesterdays win over the Chargers represented the Bills first win on the West Coast since 1966, a span covering 11 games. The Bills last win on the West Coast was Nov.

24, 1966 against Oakland, 21-10. It was also the Bills first win in San Diego since 1965. The Chargers had won' all five games since then between the two clubs in San Diego. By DON NORCROSS pass which led to Buffalos winning touchdown, on Chuck Muncie When we played him in New Orleans (Buffalos 35-26 win earlier this season) he stunk like bleep. But I tell you hes a different man out here.

The Chargers might go to the Super Bowl with him. Hes a winner. At New Orleans he didnt impress me at all. But hes a new man. He looked super today.

You try to tackle a 240-pound guy on the kickoff team. Its unbelieve-able. He almost killed me one time. For a guy to come in here a couple days before a game and run like that is phenomenal. Haslett on the Bills team attitude: Weve got a lot of young guys and couple of old guys that blend in.

Were a happy-go-lucky team. Its kind of like a college team, really. Except for (Conrad) Dobler. Hes too old to be in college. Dobler summarizing the game: I just think basically when you have two undefeated team going against each other nobodys going to control the game running and nobodys going to control the game passing.

The game is made up of mistakes and we made less mistakes than they did. Dobler on the five sacks the Bills gave up: Ill give up five sacks anyday if we win the game." Dobler on his left knee, which he was icing after the game: Its OK. Just dont judge my performance by my knee. Judge me by how I play and how many games we win. Too many general managers have judged me by my like that.

He just laughed. I guess if you dont get caught, its OK. Stringert on whether he thought Hasletts tactics were rather unethical coming from a family member: Theres no love lost on the day of a game. Stringert on the Chargers emotional feelings after the upset. I cant speak for everyone but you try to treat a loss just like a win.

You cant dwell on a loss too long just like you cant dwell on a win too long. It might be a blessing for our game against Oakland (next Sunday at Oakland). We might have gone in there 5-0 and been too high. Maybe this will bring us down to earth and well play the way we know we can. Rick Partridge on the Chargers' second blown punt, the one in fourth period that he had to leap for the snap and then was smothered by Rod Kush again: The snap was high.

I took a step and the guy was in my face. I figured Id go and get what I could but they got me. Our blocking assignments werent different. They just gave us some things and were holding our blockers. Wayne Sevier on the ups and downs of his special teams, which set up one Charger touchdown but also gave Buffalo two touchdowns: Id rather do nothing and let the game completely sway with the offense and defense.

It was our inability to protect our punter that killed us. Jim Haslett, the linebacker who keyed the Chargers punting breakdowns and also intercepted Dan Fouts CHARGERS Falcons fly high with Lions' undamaged mark Broncos 19, Browns 16 Fred Steinfort kicked four field goals for Denver while Randy Grad-ishar got the Broncos only ID when he raced 93 yards with an interception tipped to him by fellow linebacker Tom Jackson. Seahawks 26, Oilers 7 Jim Zorn hooked up with Sam McCullum for touchdown passes of 22 and 24 yards as Seattle upset Houston. Nobody was covering me, said McCullum, who was wide open in the end zone on both scoring plays. I couldnt believe it.

You could tell the Oilers were flat after a while. Im embarrassed, said Houston coach Bum Phillips. Ive never had a NFL Roundup By Associated Press Joel Williams and the Atlanta Falcons defense felt they could stop the Detroit running game. But the 23 points the defenders scored against the Lions was the difference in Atlantas 43-28 victory, which knocked the Lions off the National Football Leagues unbeaten list yesterday. We were concentrating more on their running game.

Thats the heart of their offense, said Williams, an outside linebacker who led the defenses scoring with eight points. We shut them down pretty good. Williams and his teammates allowed Lions rookie running sensation Billy Sims just 21 yards on 14 attempts. The Lions rushing game managed only 72 yards, 25 of that on a scramble by quarterback Gary Danielson. The defense allowed Detroit a 43-yard field goal, then got tough.

Patriots 21, Jets 11 Cornerback Mike Haynes, who ended his contract dispute with New England just 1 weeks ago, made his first start of the season a memorable one by running back a blocked field goal 65 yards for a touchdown. That run, which set a club record, gave the Pats a 14-6 lead and the winless Jets never recovered. Cardinals 40, Saints 7 Ottis Anderson carried 22 times for 126 yards and Wayne Morris rushed for three touchdowns for St. Louis, which has won its last two games. Veteran quarterback Jim Hart said he knows why.

Attitude, thats all, he said. All of a sudden you feel like you can win. Its contagious. I cant think of a thing that didnt work. New Orleans coach Dick Nolan felt his teams play was a contributing factor.

We stunk up the park, he said, bluntly. We were dead no Blackwood. Packers 14, Bengal 9 Lynn Dickey completed 18 of 26 passes for 203 yards and two touchdowns and James Lofton made eight receptions for 114 yards as the Packers won shortly after coach Bart Starr received a unanimous vote of support from the clubs board of directors. Cincinnati coach Forrest Gregg wasnt celebrating Starrs good fortune. He had his own problems.

We had lousy tackling, said Gregg. We played a lousy football game, gentleman. Theres no question about that We didnt come here to play. Rams 48, 49ers 28 Vince Ferragamo passed for 304 yards and four touchdowns as the Rams rolled over the Giants. Los Angeles has scored 127 points in winning its last three games after starting the season with two losses.

We are becoming a big-play team, a team that can put a lot of points on the board, said Ferragamo, who guided the Rams to the Super Bowl after Pat Haden was injured last season and has taken over for the injured Haden again this year. Eagles 24, Redskins 14 Ron Jaworski threw two touchdown passes for the Eagles, Wilbert Montgomery ran for one score and Harold Carmichael caught four passes, extending his NFL record to 117 consecutive games with at least one reception. Cowboys 24, Giants 3 New Yorks Alvin Garrett fumbled the opening kickoff to start the Giants on their way to their 12th straight loss to Dallas. Cowboys quarterback Danny White threw two scoring passes but wasnt trilled with the victory. Were just not with it yet, thats the sad thing about it, White said.

I really dont feel like I had a very good game. Weve got to be glad we were playing who we were playing. team make as many mental and physical errors as we did today. Steelers 23, Vikings 17 Terry Bradshaw passed for one touchdown and ran for another as Pittsburgh built a 23-3 lead, then had to hold off a Minnesota rally. What should have been a romp tiimed into a close game, said Bradshaw, who completed 16 of 28 passes for 236 yards, the 12th time in his career he has surpassed the 200 mark.

Havent you ever gone to work and gotten a stomach ache about noon? Well, we got our stomach ache at halftime. Pittsburghs Franco Harris carried 22 times for 102 yards, his 36th game over the 100-yard barrier. Colts 30, Dolphins 17 Bert Jones completed 18 of 26 passes for 282 yards and three touchdowns and ran for another score as Baltimore beat Miami despite a 272-yard, two-touchdown passing effort by the Dolphins Bob Griese. Weve got a lot to learn, and today we learned from the best in the league, said Miami safety Glenn Continued from D-l of the third quarter, the Chargers blocked a Greg Cater punt, but were unable to capitalize upon the good fortune when the normally reliable nirschke missed a 30-yard field goal try. I just missed it that all, Be-nirschke flatly stated after the game.

Theres not much more I can say. It was a perfect snap and a perfect hold. I just pushed the ball to the right. Late in the third quarter, Chargers punt returner Mike Fuller fumbled away a Cater punt at the Charger 31, but Buffalo couldnt cash in the break as San Diego stopped the Bills on a fourth down play at the 10. The Chargers still led, 24-12, at that point, but the flow of the game had definitely turned in Buffalos favor.

Kush saw to it that the Bills didnt lose their momentum when he got loose for a second time on a Charger punt. At the start of the fourth quarter, Partridge had to go high for a bad snap and was swarmed under by Kush, setting up the Bills at the San Diego 16. Four plays later, Ferguson hit tight end Mark Brammer with a nine-yard TD pass to narrow the San Diego margin to 24-19. Buffalo really hurt us on those punt blocks, Coryell said. They pushed one of our men to the inside and that left a man free to get to the punter.

They also tied up the protector (the man between the snapper and the punter) so he couldnt give any help to the outside. Im not 100 percent convinced, though, that the grabbing they did was legal. Id have to look at the films to be sure. Coryell wont have to look at films if he can get a tape of an interview with Bills linebacker Jim Haslett. Haslett was on the Buffalo punt team and admitted he held Hal Stringert of the Chargers in order to create the opening for Kush.

On the first block I grabbed his jersey, but the official just didnt see it, Haslett confessed. But nothings illegal if you dont get caught. On the second one, I just cut his legs out from under him. Hey, I feel bad about what happened. Stringerts my cousin (Haslett is Stringerts fathers sisters son).

But what can I do? Its a game, isnt it? Indeed it is, and the Chargers still had time enough to put the Bills away. On the Chargers first play from scrimmage after the Ferguson TD toss to Brammer, quarterback Dan Fouts lofted a soft pass for wide receiver John Jefferson. The ball hung in the air a second too long, however, and Haslett stepped in to intercept. He picked off the ball at the Charger 38 and returned it 17 yards to the 21. Fouts tried to loop the ball over me, Haslett said, but I had the play covered.

In fact, I almost jumped too soon. 1 Five plays later, rookie runner Joe Cribbs skirted right end for a TD that put Buffalo ahead, 26-24. Despite all the adversity, the Chargers still had a chance in the last 7 seven minutes to pull the game out. On first down from the Charger 25, Fouts hit Jefferson for 19 yards. Loss No.

3 for Palomar a merger of opening two BALL LOOSE FROM PETE SHAW ground, rolled over and when I started to come up, the ball rolled loose. I let go because I thought I was down. I guess the referee can only call em the way he sees em. Buffalo took charge of the ball at their own 17 and got three first downs to run out the final 4:38 and win the game. Defensively, we played well enough to win, Coryell said, but errors and those darned blocked kicks cost us.

The mistakes dropped the Chargers record to 4-1 and cost them a crack at an unbeaten season. Now, the Chargers can only hope that with the burden of being undefeated off their backs they can go to Oakland this week and play mistake-free football and come away a winner. GLEN EDWARDS (LEFT) KNOCKS Three plays later, San Diego was faced with a second and nine on the Buffalo 43. Fouts then found tight end Kellen Winslow free at the 25. Winslow grabbed the ball and headed up field where he was hit by cornerback Mario Clark.

Winslow went down, rolled over, appeared to be down and then lost the ball. The ever-present Kush, playing for the injured Jeff Nixon, jumped on the free ball at the Bills 17 and Buffalo was awarded possession by referee Bob McElwee. McElwees decision to give the ball to Buffalo looked like a bad one, however, as television replays clearly indicated Winslow was down before he fumbled. Thats the way it goes, Winslow said. Sometimes you get the breaks and sometimes you dont.

I hit the By RICK HOFF T-A Sports Writer VISTA The pre-season is over for the Palomar College football team, and the players and coaches have three different types of games to reflect upon. The Comets believe they should have won their first game of the year, a 17-14 defeat at Orange Coast. Two weeks ago, Palomar was never in the game against top-rated Pasadena City. Saturday nights final non-conference game against Santa Monica City had a little bit from both of the previous games. The first half at Vista Sta; dium was reminiscent of the Pasadena affair, with Santa Monica bolting out to a 28-0 lead.

But Palomar won the second half, 6-0, leading to a final 28-6 count against the third-rated junior college team in Southern California. Who could we be afraid of now? wondered head coach Mario Mendez after taking on a top-flight team for the second week in a row. I thought we matched up fairly well against them, but we couldnt contain their outside speed in the first half. The Corsairs ran and ran and ran at the Comets, piling up 370 yards on the ground. The three instigators of the ground assault were speedsters Daryl Castile (114 yards on 16 carries) and Andre Cooper (107 on 16), and a bruising fullback whose first name is the same as his.

last, Ulukita Ulukita (95 yards on 19 totes). They used a good balance of out side speed and the big kid in the middle, said Mendez. But we played better in the second half. Our guys finally realized that if you tackle them real hard, theyll go down. At least they couldnt get a passing game going on us.

Three Santa Monica quarterbacks could complete only four of 14 passes for 55 yards. But the score was 14-0 before the Corsairs completed a pass. Santa Monica took the opening kickoff and drove 67 yards to a seven-yard touchdown run by Castile to take an early 6-0 lead. Then came a series of turnovers that left the Corsairs in good position at the Palomar 18. Palomar fumbled the ball away on its second offensive play of the game, but safety Gary Comer got the ball right back for the Comets when he intercepted Mike McKays first pass of the night.

Two plays after the interception, however, Comet quarterback Marv Heintschel fumbled as he was being sacked and linebacker Kerry Ford recovered for the visitors. A pass interference penalty against Palomar in the end zone on third-and-eight gave the Corsairs a first down at the one, and Ulukita carried it over from there. McKays pass to Darryl Johnson for the two-point conversion made it 14-4 with 6:11 remaining in the first quarter. An 11-play, 83-yard march produced Santa Monicas next points, a 12-yard TD run by Castile, who took a pitch from McKay and raced to the left cor ner of the end zone on the first play of the second period. Palomar came back on the strong running of Craig Comer, who had gainers of 12 and seven yards, the latter giving PC a first down at the Santa Monica 33.

But a pair of consecutive procedure penalties pushed the Comets back, and Heintschel was pressured into an incompletion on fourth down. Santa Moncia took over and drove to its final score of the night, a 13-yard run by Cooper with 3:55 left in the half. Comer came up with another big play when he recovered a fumble by Ulukita in the second half, but the Comet offense fumbled the ball back on the very next play. The Corsairs drove to the one yard line, but Der-reck Peels fumble into the end zone was recovered by Palomar linebacker Dave Reiss. After an exchange of punts, Heintschel hit three straight passes to lead his team to the end zone, the touchdown coming on a 13-yard touchdown toss to Mark Anderson, who had two defenders hanging on him but made the catch despite the interference.

Palomars try for two points failed, leaving the score 28-6 with 1:45 left in the third quarter. Santa Monicas only scoring threat after the Palomar touchdown was thwarted by Roger Bowman, who blocked a 37-yard field goal attempt by Hamid Dorri with 4:15 left in the game. Statistics, D-5 a Accident costs McLinton his ieg drive in the Washington area. Ms. Snyder said blood supplies for the remainder of the weekend are adequate.

She added that 35 Redskins players are expected at the hospital today to donate blood and sign autographs. Sgt. Larry G. Naylor, 32, who is stationed at Bolling Air Force Base here, has been charged with leaving after colliding in connection with the accident, according to District of Columbia police. Naylor surrendered to authorities Thursday after realizing he had been involved, police said.

He underwent 19 hours of surgery immediately after the accident. Hospital officials said he had suffered a broken leg and pelvis, a fractured shoulder, damaged bladder and colon, head injuries and lacerations. His treatment includes the use of an artificial kidney machine, which is augmenting his own kidney functions to correct an imbalance of chemicals in his blood caused by massive tissue damage. McLinton, who played for the Redskins between 1966 and 1978, has been the inspiration for a massive blood WASHINGTON (AP) Former Washington Redskin linebacker Har-. old McLinton's badly damaged left leg has been removed at the knee, a spokeswoman for the Washington Hospital Center said yesterday.

McLinton, 33, was in very critical but stable condition after the amputa- tion late Saturday, hospital spokes-' woman Jane Snyder said, adding that -doctors reported the former National Football League players heart and 3ungs were functioning well. McLinton was struck by a car late Wednesday as he stood by Interstate 295 talking to a woman in a car. 4.
