TIMES-ADVOCATE WEDNESDAY, AUCUST 27, 1980 D-1 Chargers waive good-bye to Mitchell Don Goode traded to Cleveland tions with 57, despite not starting until the fourth game of the season. But, those numbers were what led to Mitchells dismissal by the Chargers. Last year he was cast as a part- time player in San Diego and his effectiveness was cut considerably. After averaging 225 carries and 50 pass receptions for his first seven pro seasons, Mitchell rushed just 63 times last season. He gained 211 yards and averaged just 3.3 yards per carry.

He caught just 19 passes in 79. I really regret having to do this to Lydell and I really regret not having him on our club, Coryell said. Lydell has so much class and he is really is a team player, but we felt he had to go. Lydell told me that for him to be effective he had to carry the ball 20 to 30 times a game. He needed to carry the ball a lot to get into the feel of the game.

Unfortunately, he just wasnt going to get that many carries a game with us. I honestly feel Lydell can still play in the NFL and I hope he hooks on with a team that will give him the ball, let him plug away and get his yards. During the pre-season, the Chargers gave Mitchell the ball 14 times. He gained 44 yards, but 26 of those came on one run. Take that run out, and Mitchell averaged just 1.4 yards for 13 carries.

After taking a look at everyone in the exhibition games, we decided to go with youth," Coryell said. We were able to let Lydell go because Garence Williams, LaRue Harrington and Don Woods have played so well. Those three guys are much more valuable to us at this time than Lydell because they can play both halfback and fullback. Williams had a brilliant year in 79 as a fullback, gaining 752 yards on 200 carries and catching 51 passes. With the addition of John Cap-pelletti to the Chargers, Coryell has the luxury of moving Williams back to halfback a more natural position for the three-year veteran from South Carolina.

In the pre-season, Williams has gained 90 yards on 11 carries. Harrington appears to be a gamble that is paying off. The Chargers took the 6-foot, 210-pound runner on the sixth round of last years draft. He gained 1,024 yards as a senior at Norfolk State, but a knee injury suffered in a post-season bowl game dropped his stock. We wanted to give LaRue an opportunity to show us the knee was okay and he did, Coryell said.

He passed a big test last week (when he gained 31 yards on nine carries and caught four passes for 49 yards) against the Falcons. We feel that hell really help us. Woods, however, might be the real reason Mitchell was expend-Please see Mitchell, D-3 wmk'atQit --a ADRIFT BY CHARGERS Padres IRK LYDELL MITCHELL CAST rr I I 7 in Kf fir j. CLEVELAND (AP) The Cleveland Browns today acquired linebacker Don Goode from the San Diego Chargers for future draft choices. Goode, a 6-foot-2, 240-pound seven-year veteran, is expected to join the Browns this week.

The trade is subject to Goode passing a physical examination, however. The Browns did not say how many draft choices or which ones will be given the Chargers. Goode, now 29, was a first round draft choice by San Diego in 1974, then coached by Tommy Prothro, now an executive vice president and the director of player personnel for the Browns, out of Kansas. Before tabbing Goode, a stand-up defensive end in college, the Chargers drafted fullback Bo Matthews of Colorado. Matthews was recently traded to the New York Giants for a middle round draft choice.

Last season, Goode, then a starter, suffered a shoulder separation in the Chargers last pre-season game against the Los Angeles Rams in Los Angeles. Replaced by Syracuses Ray Preston, who led the team in tackles last season, Goode missed the first three regular season games, but played the rest of the season as a reserve. By trading Goode, the Chargers now have six linebackers Woodrow Lowe, Bob Horn, Cliff Thrift, Jim Laslavic, Linden King and Preston. finally Juan Eichelberger. Then Washington hit his second homer of the night and ninth of the season in the sixth to give the Mets a 5-4 lead.

Winfields 17th and Mumphreys third of the season turned that into a San Diego lead off Tom Hausman in the seventh. What can you say? New York manager Joe Torre said. We left a lot of men on base, 180 feet or 90 feet away. Thats not how to win. New York stranded 16 runners and had the potential winning run at second base with one out in the 12th, 13th and 14th innings but couldnt score.

The Padres left 17 men aboard. Its very nice, Said Winfield. Weve had a lot of tough extra-inning losses lately and it was a welcome win. 1 Gene Richards started the winning rally with a single off Pete Falcone, 6-8, the sixth New York pitcher, in the 18th. He stole second and moved to third on a sacrifice.

Then Winfield was intentionally walked, but one-time Met Willie Montanez foiled Torres lefty-lefty strategy by singling home Richards. When Mumphrey doubled for his fifth hit of the game, Winfield also scored. I would have walked me, too, in that inning, said Winfield. But I was happy to score because sometimes that extra run makes a big win a long one i I- I 3 s- i -Jft 4 By JOHN MAFFEI I T-A Sports Editor SAN DIEGO Running the foot-' ball effectively has been a concern to Charger coach Don Coryell for more than a year. Last season, the Chargers made it to the NFL playoffs on the strong right arm of quarterback Dan Fouts.

The Chargers averaged 244.7 yards per game passing, but a dismal 104.3 rushing. In four 1980 pre-season games, that 104.3 figure has slipped to 100.5. Thats why there were some raised eyebrows yesterday when Coryell announced that running back Lydell Mitchell was among the players cut by the Chargers. Mitchell, an eight-year veteran out of Penn State, came to the Chargers two years ago in exchange for Joe Washington. Mitchell ranks as the 11th all-time NFL rusher with 6,518 yards.

He needs only 285 yards to pass John Henry Johnson and 756 to pass Leroy Kelly. Among active rushers in the AFC, Mitchell ranked third. He has gained 1,000 or more yards in a season three times in his career and won the NFL receiving title in 1974 when he caught 72 balls. He also set an NFL record with 40 carries in a game. In 1978, Mitchell led the Chargers in rushing with 820 on 214 carries and was tops on the club in recep Not even jets can stop Tracy NEW YORK (AP) It will take more than unusual conditions, a tight arm and the pressure of being the defending champion and No.l seed to get Tracy Austin upset.

Austin beat Anne Smith, 6-2, 7-5, last night in the first round of the U.S. Open tennis championships, then described the match as difficult and somewhat bizarre. Now that its over, Im glad it was tough, said Austin, at 17, the worlds top womens player. You have to get used to the planes flying over. I didnt realize how much you go by the sound of the ball.

Its hard to judge how hard its hit when you dont hear it. Its weird. Tracy took today off but one of her main challengers, second-seed Martina Navratilova, had an evening piatch with Lena Sandin of Sweden. The only other seeded women scheduled for today were No.6 Dianne Fromholtz of Australia, who also played under the lights, against Zina Garrison, and No.10 Virginia Ruzici of Romania vs. Nina Bohm of Sweden.

Jimmy Connors, rated third, was pitted against Marcel Freeman at night, while in day matches, sixth-seed Gene Mayer played Gianni Ocleppo of Italy, seventh-seed Harold Solomon tangled with Kevin Curren of South Africa, No.10 Ivan Lendl of Czechoslovakia played Tim Mayotte, No. 12 Jose-Luis Gere of Argentina opposed Bemie Mitton of South Africa, No. 13 Brian Gottfried took on David Carter of Australia, and Victor Amaya, the 16th seed, played Larry Davidson. Austin noted the difficulty of her portion of the draw in the $654,082 tournament. My draw is unbelievable, said the youngest player ever to win the Open.

Anne Smith is a tough first round match. I have Rosie (Casals) next. The others don't have that tough a draw. Still, Austin must believe she can win again, even if she wouldnt come right out and say it. I would never say that, she claimed.

Then everybody would expect me to win and it would be in the papers that Tracy is cocky. No one expected me to win last year; I didnt think Id win. I dont think the pressure bothers me. My arm muscles are a little tight and that might bother me a bit. Its OK but I didnt swing my hardest tonight.

While Austin struggled a bit against Smith, No.3 Chris Evert Lloyd barely had a workout in demolishing Kim Sands, 64), 6-0. I would have liked a tougher match than that; theres no way I can tell how Im playing from a match like that, said Lloyd, who won here from 1975 through 1978. I think the No.l position is up for grabs if Tracy, Martina or I win here. And Im comfortable as No.3. The pressure is off my back.

It was the same at Wimbledon, Lloyd, a loser in the finals there. --rsW-t. Jones started only one game for the Razorbacks last season.

He completed 29-of-51 passes for 358 yards and TDs for the year. Texas, on the other hand, has junior QB Donnie Little returning. Little started 10 of Texas 12 games last season, hitting 56-of-113 passes for 750 yards and two scores. The main cog in the Longhorn offense, however, is A.J. It was a welcome win, said Dave Winfield after the San Diego Padres outlasted the New York Mets, 8-6, in the five hour and one minute marathon yesterday. New York tied the game with a run in the ninth after San Diego had taken a 6-5 lead on homers by Winfield and Jerry Mumphrey in the seventh.

But San Diego had the right answers at the end. I pitched a game a few days ago where I went four innings without any hits and I got nothing, said winning pitcher Eric Rasmussen, 3-9. This kind of makes up for that. San Diego had lost games of 20 and 17 innings on the current road trip before yesterdays victory. Actually, we havent had that bad a trip, said Padres manager Jerry Coleman.

Weve won two games on this trip and sometimes we dont do that well. After the Padres jumped off to a 3-0 lead against Met starter Mark Bom-back in the second inning, Claudell Washington hit the first of his two homers to draw the Mets to within 3-1. With the Padres in front, 4-1, in the fifth, Jose Morales slammed a pinch two-run homer off San Diego starter and Hula (Jan.10). NBC hosts the Fiesta (Dec. 26), Rose (Jan.

However, members of the Holiday Bowl committee feel it is only a matter of time before their game is picked up by one of the networks. Labor Day might be a holiday for some, but not for ABC-TV. Trying to take advantage of the holiday spirit and the fact that most of Americas male TV viewers will be at home that evening, ABC will kickoff its coverage of the 1980 college football season on Monday. The game figures to be a blockbuster as Arkansas rolls into Austin to do battle with the Longhorns of Texas. Gametime locally is 6 p.m. on Channel 10.

Arkansas finished the 1979 season with a 10-2 mark and was ranked eighth by Associated Press at the end of the season. The Razorbacks return 14 starters (five on offense and nine on defense). Texas ended the 79 campaign with a 9-3 record and a No. 12 ranking on the final AP poll. The Longhorns have just 10 returning starters (seven on offense and three on defense) from that team.
