Both teams concentrated on their ground attacks, making for low passing totals. (AP) Overcoming their own kicking errors, a young and inexperienced Auburn football team suddenly grew to adult-hood Saturday in a 14-12 victory over Tennessee. The Tigers had given Tennessee a two-point safety on a bad punt snap and another seven points on the following series of downs in the first quarter. In the second period, they set Tennessee up for a field goal when punter Skip Johnston hobbled the snap inside Auburns 10 yard line It might have looked like a comedy of errors, but the game was much more than that," said Auburn coach Doug Barfield. When we had the bad snap and the dropped snap, we didnt jump all over the kids. We knew they werent trying to do it and we just had to keep moving on Thats just what the Tigers did Behind 12-0, they scored two touchdowns, one each in the second and third periods, and held Tennessee scoreless the rest of the game Our defense deserves a lot of credit because they didnt give up any points except as a direct result of our kicking game errors, Barfield said.

We obviously improved since last week. Tennessee coach Johnny Majors, now 1-2 at his alma mater, said his team went into a shell after taking advantage of Auburns kicking mistakes. It takes away another chance to be a better than average football team, he said. But we didnt quit; we fought back and had a chance to win at the end. beginning of the second quarter to set up a 24-yard field goal by Gaylor to put Tennessee on top 12-0. Auburn then drove 78 yards down the field and scored its first touchdown on a 25-yard pass from quarterback John Crane to end Byron Franklin. Taking its 14-12 lead in the third quarter, Auburn capitalized on an interception and a fumble to shut out the Vols for the half. Tennessee quarterback Pat Ryan had moved the Vols to within scoring range on a 26-yard pass to freshman Reggie Harper at Auburns 31 yard line right after the Tigers scored. Safety James McKinney, however, intercepted Ryans next pass, intended for Jeff Moore, at the 19 yard line.

At the beginning of the fourth quarter, Tennessee had moved the ball from its own 41 to inside Auburns five yard line. Tackle John Smith ended the threat by jumping on Ryans fumble on the one yard line three plays later. Auburn, which had been expected to take to the air after Tennessee gave up 343 yards passing to Boston College last week, stuck to the ground, driving 241 yards while attempting only nine passes. KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (AP) Freshman James Brooks set up a winning touchdown with a 40-yard spurt as Auburn held off three Tennessee scoring threats in the second half to take a 14-12 college football victory over the Vols in Knoxville Saturday.

The game was the first Southeastern Conference football match of the season for both schools as Auburn advanced its record to 2-1 overall, while Tennessee fell to 1-2. Brooks, the games leading rusher, took the ball to the Tennessee 10-yard line with nine minutes left in the third quarter. Three plays later, fullback William Andrews took a pitchout five yards around the left side for the winning touchdown. Tennessee made a last ditch effort with 15 seconds remaining in the game when kicker Jimmy Gaylor was sent in to attempt a 36-yard field goal. Gaylor failed to connect as the ball landed 10 yards short of the goal posts.

Tennessee had jumped out to a nine-point lead in the first quarter on a safety and a twoyard touchdown by Kelsey Finch. The safety occurred when Auburn's center Tom Nettleman snapped the ball over the head of punter Skip Johnston into the defenders end zone. (AP) -It is hard to imagine making the number of mistakes we did and still beating a team of Mississippi States caliber, Coach Doug Dickey of Florida said Saturday after his 13th-ranked Gators defeated the 12th-ranked Bulldogs 24-22 in a regionally televised Southeastern Conference football game. The Gators, who lost six fumbles, had blown a 17-0 lead when State converted three fumbles into short quarter, returned in the final three minutes to direct a 73-yard scoring drive that gave the Gators the victory on his 16-yard scoring run with only 57 seconds left. Our defensive team deserves all the credit in the world, Dickey said. "They were on the field too long. They were under pressure all day, and they kept us in the game.

Dickey said Scott Hutchinson, who was in on 15 tackles in the first half alone and intercepted a pass in the final minute, must have had one of the alltime great games a middle guard could have. Meanwhile, Coach Bob Tyler of State, playing its first game since being removed from NCAA probation, said, This was a tough loss. Westside head coach Frank Williamson exclaimed after the double overtime contest. I would like to think we are a better football team than we looked this morning, Williamson added.
