(AP) Kelsey Finch scored on runs of 35 and three yards and Johnny Majors recorded his first coaching triumph at Tennessee as the Vols defeated error-plagued Boston College 24-18 Saturday night. Finch bolted 35 yards with 5 2 minutes gone in the game for his first touchdown and Tennessees defense, reminiscent of the Vols strong defensive tradition, throttled four Boston scoring threats with interceptions and another with a faumble recovery. The Vols, who nursed a 7-3 lead through the second and third periods, sealed their first victory in two games with 17 points in the first seven minutes of the final quarter. Jimmy Streater flipped an 11-yard touchdown pass to Billy Arbo, Finch went three yards for his second touchdown less than three minutes later and Jim Gaylor made it 24-3 with a 35-yard field goal.

Despite a 343 yard aerial display by Ken Smith, Boston College, which was blanked In all, Boston College lost the ball eight times on four interceptions and four fumbles. Three of the interceptions came in the second period, two of them in the end zone by Thomas Rowsey and Rowland James. James also intercepted a pass at his own 21 in the final minute of the first half, returning it 61 yards to the Boston 18 and recovered a fumble at the Tennessee 41 with one second to go. 44-0 in its opener by Texas, failed to score a touchdown until Smith hooked up with Mike Godbolt on a 34-yard pass play with 5:41 remaining. The Eagles first points came on Tim Moorman's 33-yard field goal midway through the opening period and Smith passed 11 yards to Paul McCarty for a touchdown with 1:11 left in the game.

Knapple, hitting on 12 of 17 passes, eclipsed the Colorado Minnesota -Ohio St, only to see the run for a two-point conversion fail. It was the third straight road game and third straight victory for the Pirates. The non-conference games was the second straight loss for the Rockets.

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) East Carolina quarterback Leander Green tossed a 16-yard pass to Billy Ray Washington with 9:05 to go in the fourth quarter and tailback Willie Hawkins ran for a two-point conversion to give the Pirates a 22-9 win over the Toledo Rockets. Hawkins, having a good night, scampered 53 yards with the second-half kickoff to Toledos 43-yard line, and 11 plays later plunged over from the two to make it 14-3. Late in the first quarter John Meyer recovered a Missouri fumble, and Finzer booted his field goal early in the second quarter for an 11-0 lead. Iowa posts 12-10 win over Iowa St. IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) Third-string tailback Dennis Mosley raced 77 yards for a touchdown and Iowa bunched all its offense in the first quarter to beat Iowa State 12-10 in a regionally televised non-conference college football Saturday. Iowa had been tabbed three-point underdogs in the renewal of the emotional intrastate rivalry that had been dormant for 43 years.

But the Hawkeye defense was superb, allowing Iowa State just 72 total yards until the last play of the game when freshman quarterback John Quinn completed a futile 24-yard pass as time ran out. N. Texas State decisions SMU IRVING, Tex. (AP) Senior quarterback Ken Washington rifled a 20-yard touchdown pass and dashed four yards for another score to direct North Texas State to a 24-13 non-conference victory over stunned Southern Methodist Saturday night the first win for the Mean Green over the Mustangs in 34 years. The first half of the game was all Tulane. The second was totally Stanford. Tulanes freshman tailback Marvin Christian rushed for 134 yards in the contest, getting 121 of that in the first half. Benjamin, one of the nations top passers, didnt throw a pass until midway through the second quarter, with his first toss getting intercepted. On Stanfords next possession, Benjamin was 3-6 for 42 yards, setting up Nabers first field goal of 47 yards in the second quarter.

He was 4-4 for 44 yards in the drive for Nabers third quarter field goal. Chris'ttafi scored both Tulane touchdowns, the first on a five-yard pass from Roch Hontas in the opening quarter, the second on a 20-yard sprint in the second period. Tulane kicker Ed Murray booted a 42-yard field goal after Stanford had narrowed the gap to 14-6. Stanford, a two-touchdown favorite, got 15 points in the final quarter after being stopped by a stubborn Tulane defense four times From a yard out. Baylors final tally came after Ken Griffin blocked a Kentucky punt and Michael Singletary caught the ball on a bounce and ran into the end zone from the Wildcats eight.

(AP) Injured quarterback Sammy Bickham and running back Gary Blair capped short scoring drives as Baylor capitalized on Kentucky errors Saturday and defeated the Wildcats 21-6 in an interconference college football struggle. Neither team Was able to generate much punch offensively, but Kentucky punting miscues and a fumbled pass reception gave Baylor all it needed. Blair scored on a one-yard run after Baylor recovered a fumbled Kentucky pass completion at the Wildcats three. That gave Baylor a 7-0 halftime advantage. But Baylor began its second scoring drive from the Kentucky 12 after the ball sailed over the head of Kentucky punter Kevin Kelly on a fourthdown play.

Bickham. recovering from a shoulder separation and a dislocated finger, scored from the five-yard line three plays later.
