C4 TIMES ADVOCATE, Escondido, Tuesday, Oct. 23, 1984 There's good news, bad news for SDSU V' 4 -K Associated Press Photo Falcons' Tom Pridemore hits Eric Dickerson too late to prevent a Rams Angry Dickerson shoots down Falcons By John Maffei Times Advoram Sports Editor The good news at San Diego State is that the Aztecs basketball team lost only one letterman from a team that went 15-13 last year. The bad news is that one man Is Michael Cage, perhaps the best basketball player ever at the school and a first round pick in the NBA draft. In the three weeks that remain before the Aztecs open the 1984-85 season against the University of Toronto, Coach Smokey Gaines must find someone to fill Cages rather large shoes. "Its hard to say where you stand when you lose a guy like Michael Cage," Gaines said.

"We have a lot of people returning, but you Just dont replace a guy like Cage. It wasnt just the points and rebounds he gave us. He was our leader, both on and off the floor. He was the guy everyone leaned on for support. There is no doubt well miss him.

The question is how much?" Because of NCAA sanctions against the school, the Aztecs were allowed to bring in only one player on scholarship. Gaines thought he needed help in the backcourt more than the front, so he signed 5-foot-11 guard Creon Dorsey out of Texas State Technical Institute. Only time will tell, said Gaines, "but Creon is so quick. Hes intelligent and he handles the ball well. He looks like a natural point guard.

If he could help us there, it could make a difference because it would give us a lot of flexibility at the guard spots. The addition of Dorsey gives the Aztecs four quality guards. Jeff Konek was a starter last season, Bobby Owens was a key reserve and Anthony Watson, who was forced to play the point, can be spectacular. In order to win this season, Gaines must blend that talent with a front line that can be fairly imposing Leonard Allen, a 6-10 center, last year played like he was about ready to blossom into a top-notch player. Andre Ross, a 6 9 senior, is the other returning starter.

Michael Kennedy, a 6-9 senior who was somewhat of a disappointment last season, would be a major help if hes playing well this year. What would really help, however. is a healthy John Martens. The 6-8 junior has been plagued by injuries each of the last two season. But when he's healthy, hes a quality player Like San Diego State, USD has to replace one key man -Coach Jim Brovelli.

Brovelli left the school last season after taking the Toreros to the NCAA Playoffs. Hes now the head man at USF and has been replaced at USD by Hank Egan, the former Air Force head coach Like San Diego State, USD has four letterman back from a team that was 18-10. And like San Diego State, the man USD must replace was their best forward Mike Whitmarsh Whitmarsh was first touchdown. erson. The 6-foot-3, 220-pound speedster, however, didnt let it bother him in his performance, scoring the Rams first touchdown on his 10-yard sweep after only 1 03 of the second quarter before letting Henry Ellard do the rest.

Ellard, the NFLs leading punt returner, who helped set up Dickersons score with a 29-yard punt return, caught a nine-yard TD pass from quarterback Jeff Kemp only 1:08 later, then closed out the 21-point second period with an explosive 69-yard score on a punt return with 39 seconds left before intermission. Surgery Continued from page Cl knee cap to the bump below the knee. The normal rehabilitation period before a return to strenuous sports for an injury similar to Winslows is nine to 12 months. Losse said he wouldnt be able to judge how well Winslow is recovering until he is well into his rehabilitation program and actually begins running and pivoting. This will extend for a period of approximately six months, said Losse.

The Chargers team physician said Winslow will never have 100 percent use of the knee again. Very successful surgery gives you 95 percent use, said Losse. Thats what were hoping for. But its never the same. Theres always going to be some scar tissue.

When Losse informed Winslow of the severity of his injury Monday morning, the Chargers All-Pro tight end reacted emotionally. ATLANTA (AP) Eric Dicker-son was fuming. They really hacked me off. They have no class, the Los Angeles running back said of the Atlanta Falcons defenders after helping the Rams to a 24-10 National Football League victory Monday night in a nationally televised contest. Dickerson, who ran for 142 yards on 25 carries, including a 10-yard touchdown run, charged the Falcons with hitting late on numerous occasions and was particularly incensed at Atlanta defensive back Tom Pridemore, for an alleged tardy hit on only his second carry of the night.

Winslow Continued from page Cl The wide receivers will have to do more, the running backs will have to do more, everyone has to, said Zampese. "Basically, well do the same things offensively, and I think well do them well. I think Pete Holohan and Eric Sievers are two fine tight ends. There was no doubt in our mind that we had the three best tight ends on one club, along with the best tight end. "We hope to maintain the same certain rhythm and score points.

Well find out if we can. I think we will. Im confident of that. But in no way was Zampese trying to downplay Winslows loss, 0k College Notes By John MaffoiT A Sports Editor team all-conference and was drafted by the NBA. But the Toreros do have senior guards Mark Bostic and Carr back along with 6-11 sophomore center Scott Thompson and much-improved forward Anthony Reuss.

The top recruits for USD are JC point guard Kiki Jackson out of Mesa Community College in Mesa, and freshman forward Steve Moser out of Ocean View High School in Huntington Beach where he averaged 16.8 points per game as a freshman. here. The game figures to be a good one. Hawaii has won four straight games. One of the Rainbow losses this season was 18-13 to BYU a Hawaii receiver dropped a pass or that would have been a victory. Hawaii plays nine of its 11 games at home this season The Holiday Bowl Selection Committee is already hard at work.

Last week the members of that committee scouted Iowa, Kentucky, LSU, Michigan and Oklahoma State. The week before, committee members were distpatched to check out Boston College, Oregon, Purdue, Stanford. USC and Washington The first day a team may be invited to play in a post-season game is Nov 24 The Holiday Bowl will be played Dec 21 in San Diego Stadium I like to do But i really need some time to reflect. "1 think I was treated fairly, he said "The only advice I have for Marty is, make sure you can kick field goals Schottenheimer, 41, in his fifth year with the Browns, has transformed the Browns' once-weak defense mto the top rated unit in the American Football Conference and the second rated overall the NFL Schottenheimer previously was a defensive coach with the Detroit Lions and New York Giants. this is fresh start We've got to get this organization back to winning ays," said Schttenheimer Browns ask Rutigliano to step aside as coach Mike Lansford closed out the Rams scoring with an 18-yard field goal in the fourth period. The Falcons, who had beaten Los Angeles two weeks ago 30-28, could manage only a 39-yard field goal from Mick Luckhurst in the second quarter and scored in the closing minute on an 18-yard pass from Steve Bartkowskito Stacey Bailey. Ellard, a second-year player from Fresno State, who suffered a bruised thigh and sat out the second half, said his punt return TD wasnt the end of the game for the Falcons but, it probably was a big letdown. His response was very appropriate, said Losse. If he wasnt upset, Id be very concerned.

Reached at Sharp Hospital, Winslow said he did not wish to discuss his injury. I dont feel like talking. I dont feel like being bothered right now, he said. Should Winslows injury be so severe as to keep him from playing again, the Chargers might have to pay almost $3 million to a tight end who would never catch another pass. According to Winslows agent, Jim Steiner, Winslows contract is guaranteed.

He signed a new contract this season. After missing the second game of the season while involved in a contract dispute, Winslow reached an agreement with the Chargers that Steiner said was worth in the neighborhood of $3.5 million. It is not known whether Winslows contract Is insured. Coincidentally, the game Winslow missed during his holdout was against Seattle, the Chargers opponent Monday night. 3180 "It was No.

27, I dont know his name. I think he wanted to do a head stand or a hand stand on my back after I had been down what seemed like five minutes, he said. It was right there on the sideline and a referee was right there, and said he didnt see it. I think somebody needs glasses. He said that wasnt the only cheap shot, but "thats the way they play.

I guess thats what the coaches down in Atlanta teach them. Im not saying its dirty, but I dont think its real good football. If they want to play that way, they ought to go to Russia," said Dick the loss of a man whod been to the Pro Bowl in four of his five seasons. "Any time you take away that caliber of a player its going to really hurt," said Zampese. How many players can really dominate a football game? Eight? Ten? Twelve? Im talking about guys who can truly dominate a football game.

Kellen could do that. He put a lot of pressure on a teams defensive game plan. They couldnt single cover him or wed throw to him all day. And when they doubled him, what did that do to the other receivers? Theyve got ability, too. "So the biggest thing is we lose a superior football player, and a superior person, too.

Hes such a great competitor. "Like I said, its a shame. Chargers notes "You just hate the thought of playing without a guy whos capable of doing so much for us, Clark said. "Billy just has the ability to do it all for you." Clark said Sims was hit on a clean shot, but he was critical of the playing surface in the Minneapolis Humphrey Dome. He got hit high and his foot started to get caught on the turf, Clark said.

The call went against tight end Eric Sievers, but the Raiders claimed it was Drew Gissinger who was holding. "I'd rather not comment on the officiating at all," said Coryell, who was angry about the call after Sunday's game. "I have gone on league record for being in favor of video replays. I think that's something that certainly should be done. To me, it's something the officials could use.

I would welcome it if I were an official. I'd hate to make a bad call.
