Valley Escondido (v2 block east of Midway) 743-6422 By STEVE RAVAGO Th current trend among bands on concert tours has been to place the emphasis on special effects and stage lighting rather than the music itself.

In most instances the greater the effects, the more mediocre the groups actual talent (i.e. Kiss, Kansas and Styx). To get to the heart of the subject: any band that really believes in their own music doesnt need to use fog machines and flashy lighting a true band relies on honest music. Such a band believes in what they play. An excellent example is Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers: a hard-working band whose music elicits an audience reaction more effectively than lights ever could.

Still another prime example of no-frills rock roll is an L.A. band called the Naughty Sweeties. The Naughty Sweeties dont need no stinking special effects because their music says it all: two-fisted, good-time rock is now being served. I guess it goes without saying that I am a Naughty Sweetie fan but with good reason: the Sweeties aint no sugar-coated music band. Go see the Naughty ones at the Spirit Club this Saturday night.

Also slated for this hot night of music is Audio Bop, one heck of a good local band, and 4-Eyes all three of them. Th Belly Up Tavern in Solana Beach will present bluesman Lowell Fulsom Sunday for an evening of and blues. Fulsom now spends most of his time touring both the states and Europe. His distinctive guitar style has influenced guitarists both rock and blues to this day. Backing Fulsom at the Belly Up is the Johnny Almond-Mark Lessman Band.
