-y-vi 11 11 1 D2 TIMES-ADVOCATE, Escondido. Ca Monday. December 23 1935 Chargers Notes Chargers Scoreboard lowed 30 or more points, and they were 3-5 in those games. Last year, San Diego scored over 30 seven times (5-2) and allowed more than 30 six times (0-6). From the individual statistics department, Mark Herrmann set a new Chargers record for passing attempts (58) and tied the mark for most completions (37).

From the team stats file, the Chargers tied their season high for first downs (32); set a new season mark for rushing yards (191), produced their second-highest possession time of the year rolled up their third-highest net yardage total of the year (532); and ran off 90 plays, their most this year. In fact, San Diego had more passing attempts (58) than the Chiefs had total plays (55). Defensively, the Chiefs completed and attempted the fewest number of passes against San Diego this year 1 3 of 23) but they passed for the second-highest amount (343). K.C.s average gain per attempt was 14.9 yards; its average per completion was a whopping 26.4. Also, the Chargers failed to intercept a pass for the first time since the fifth game of the year.

San Diego had entered the game with 26 interceptions, the most in the AFC. Kellen Winslow has reportedly been disgruntled with his new role on the Chargers he is primarily a blocker but when asked Sunday if he would like to return to the team next year, Winslow said, Oh, yeah, Id like to come back. I really cant complain, he added. I have to play that role. In the past, Ive been asked to play different roles, but the bottom line is that we win.

After each Chiefs touchdown, the scoreboard at Arrowhead Stadium reminded fans that the Fri-to-Lay Corp. was donating $100 for each point scored by Kansas City to the Chiefs Childrens Fund, a local charity. That reminded Winslow of a game at New England in 1979, when the Chargers fell behind 20-0 in the second quarter of a game they eventually lost 27-21. They were donating $700 per point to the New England Boys Club, Winslow said, and they had a new gym, a new arena and they were working on a new race track before we got going. Trumaine Johnson scored his first NFL touchdown Sunday on a leaping 20-yard reception, but the former USFL standout finished his rookie NFL season with just four catches for 51 yards (two for 25 yards Sunday).

(The touchdown) is a great inspiration for me to come back and have a positive attitude next year, Johnson said. Asked about his season, Johnson replied, Im sorry we didnt get in the playoffs because I think we have a championship team here. I think I should have played more and I think I couldve helped the team more. Sundays game was the ninth this year in which the Chargers scored 30 or more points, and they were 6-3 in those games. However, it was also the eighth time this year the Chargers al- 241st career game Sunday to establish a new NFL record for offensive linemen.

The old record of 240 games was set by Whites former Minnesota teammate, Mick Tingelhoff. White has expressed a desire to return to the Chargers next year, and all indications are that he will be asked to do so. In addition to breaking the NFL record for all-purpose yardage, Lionel James became the first running back in league history to gain over 1,000 yards receiving. James, who had eight catches for 42 yards Sunday, finished the year with 86 receptions for 1,027 yards. Later Sunday, San Francisco running back Roger Craig caught five passes for 50 yards, giving him a season total of 92 catches for 1,016 yards.

The reception total is an NFL record for running backs, breaking Rickey Youngs mark of 88. Wes Chandler caught six passes for 88 yards and one touchdown to finish the season with 67 catches, 1,199 yards and 10 touchdowns. The latter two marks are career highs for Chandler. Injury report: Dan Fouts was in for just one play a handoff after Mark Herrmann had the wind knocked out of him. Also, Buford McGee pulled a hamstring and Mike Guendling sprained an ankle.

For the Chiefs, wide receiver Stephone Paige suffered bruised ribs in the first half and was reported questionable to return for the second half. At the time, Paige had six catches for 258 yards, prompting one press boxer to say, Hed come off his death bed to play against the Chargers. Paige played the second half and wound up setting an NFL record with 309 yards receiving. PAT Thomas (kick) A better 86 schedule is bright side By Jay Posner Times Advocate Sportswnter KANSAS CITY, Mo. The Chargers were disappointed by Sundays 38-34 loss to Kansas City, but in the long run, the defeat may have been beneficial. San Diego finished the season 8-8 and in fourth place in the AFC West. Because of that, the Chargers will play the following teams in addition to the standard two games each against the Raiders, Denver, Seattle and Kansas City; Home: Miami (12-4), Houston (5-11), Dallas (10-6) and Washington (10-6). Away: Indianapolis (5-11), Cleveland (8-8), New York Giants (10-6) and Philadelphia (7-9).

There are five playoff teams in that group, but three of the five will have to play in San Diego Stadium, where the Chargers were 6-2 this year. Had the Chargers won Sunday and finished third, their non-division schedule would have been as follows: Home: New York Jets (11-5), Pittsburgh (7-9), New York Giants (10-6) and Philadelphia (7-9). Away: New England (11-5), Cincinnati (7-9), Dallas (10-6) and Washington (10-6). Again, five playoff teams, but this time three of the five would host the Chargers, who were 2-6 on the road this year. The NFL also set its 1986 draft order Sunday night, and the Chargers will make the 14th and 15th selections in the first round.

The 14th pick is their own, while the 15th was traded to the club from Green Bay in exchange for defensive back Mossy Cade. Guard Ed White played in his Chiefs' Kevin Ross breaks up this the ball to Gary, linebackers get nervous and start sweating because Gary can make them look silly. Anderson was the focal point of two fourth-quarter drives that cut the Chiefs lead from 38-13 to 38-27. He gained 72 of 88 yards on a drive that ended in a two-yard run by Tim Spencer. The next time San Diego had the ball.

Anderson accounted for 37 of 55 yards on a drive that culminated in an eight-yard scoring pass from Mark Herrmann to James. The Chargers then cut the lead to just four points with an 80-yard drive later in the final quarter, with Trumaine Johnson getting his first NFL touchdown on a leaping 20-yard reception with 2:48 remaining. But, needing a defensive stand with two minutes left, the Chargers instead allowed Mike Pruitt to struggle for seven yards on 3rd and 5, clinching the victory. I think all that is relative. Ive been in coaching 15 years and Ive prepared every day to be a head football coach.

If the opportunity arises, I will be prepared in all areas. Ive played offensively and defensively and Ive coached every position on a football team. Zampese, meanwhile, has said repeatedly he has no desire to be a head coach and he also does not care about titles. Instead, he is content to design and coordinate what has been the NFLs No. 1 offense since 1979.

He declined to comment Sunday night. Mr. Spanos has made a commitment to winning and I am pleased to be a part of that, Coryell said. Al Saunders has been a tremendous asset to my staff, and I am pleased that his promotion will allow Ernie Zampese to concentrate solely on the preparation of our offensive game plan, which in my opinion he does better than any coach in the NFL. Coryell became the Chargers sixth head coach Sept.

25, 1978, replacing Tommy Prothro. The Chargers have posted a 68-49 record under Coryell. Wagstaff and Braden are both concluding their fifth seasons as assistants under Coryell. Wagstaff, 49, previously coached under Chuck Knox with the L.A. Rams and Buffalo, while Braden, 47, spent four seasons with the Denver Broncos before joining the Chargers.

We just played poorly. Why? No one could come up with an answer, and no one used the absence of injured quarterback Dan Fouts as an excuse.

His replacement, Herrmann, completed 37 of 58 passes for 362 yards and three touchdowns, though he was intercepted three times. I thought coming in we were ready to play, safety Gill Byrd said. I dont know, in the first half we were out there physically, but we made too many mistakes mentally. Personally it leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. We had come such a long way in the last three games.

We had made the big plays when we had to, but today we didnt. There was no concentration, no intensity, cornerback John Hendy said. Just a real bad performance on our part. We know were better than an 8-8 team. Unfortunately for Hendy and the rest of the Chargers, they wont have a chance to prove that until next September.

ry Metcalfs NFL record, James got 101 on kickoff returns in the first half alone. He finally broke he record ith a 2 1 -yard return on the opening kickoff of the second half and finished the day with 242 total yards, giving him 2,535 for the vear (Metcalf had 2,462 in 1975). I think its a great individual honor, something to be proud of, James said. But most of all Im a team person and I'd rather win. Id trade the individual record for a playoff spot.

Once James had secured the record, the Chargers turned their offense over to Gary Anderson, and the thrill-a-second rookie responded with an electrifying performance. Anderson, who had gained just 32 yards rushing in the first half, exploded after halftime with 40 yards rushing and 9 catches for 91 yards. Most of the receptions were designed to take advantage of the Chiefs loose defense, which was designed to take away the big play. We knew theyd lay back and not play the run. so we said wed take the short stuff, work down the field and not panic, tight end Kellen Winslow said.

We gave him a Christmas present with our breakdowns. Nevertheless, Paige was impressed with his performance. Some teams dont get that much in a whole game. he said When you look at it on paper, its incredible.

Corvell wasnt too impressed, though, and he let the Chargers know about at halftime. Loudly. He was like I never heard him before, but he had a reason to be, said Dale, ho was benched for the first series of the second half because of his poor play. Army, with only one senior on its starting five and far smaller than the Midshipmen, stayed close only for the first 12 minutes, trailing 24-20 on the strength of a hot-shooting by forward Ron Steptoe. But then Navy outscored the Cadets 22-5 and led 46-25 at halftime. The Navy spree came while the 6-foot-11 Robinson, who scored only seven points in the first half, was on the bench with foul trouble.
