TIMES-ADVOCATE Classified Monday, Sept. 3, 1984 home, Winslow goes home Chargers come By Don Norcross Times Advocate Sportswriter MINNEAPOLIS It was an hour after the Chargers had finished embarassing the Minnesota Vikings 42-13, and there was Kellen Winslow, still fully dressed in his uniform, sans helmet, pressed up against a wall by a battery of reporters outside the Chargers locker room. One by one his teammates would come out of the locker room, now showered and dressed in street clothes. As they passed the crowd, most of them had a parting word for Winslow. Good luck, guy, said Wes Chandler, reaching his hand over reporters to shake Winslows.

You do the same, said Kellen. Pete Johnson didnt understand why the Chargers tight end was holding court. 'Cmon, Kellen. Get in there and trying to reach an agreement Wednesday. Those talks broke off Friday, and Steiner flew back to St.

Louis. Winslow is seeking to upgrade his salary from the present $210,000 to $700,000. "Ive waited around," said Winslow. Ive had promises hanging around my head. Ive been given deadlines, had those deadlines broken and then had them set new deadlines.

Im finished. Winslow, though, wasnt saying that his career is necessarily over with the Chargers. Theres always the possibility well be able to work something out, he said. Winslow said Steiner asked the club if it would consider trading him. The word trade was mentioned, said Winslow.

"They said no, they wont trade me. The day before the game Wins in the National Football League until a couple of days before training camp? They make moves that dont help the team, but I guess it hits home more when it happens to you. I feel cheated. Ive been part of this offense for many years. Theyve turned their back on me.

I have nowhere else to go but home. Winslow is hurt because as early as February 1983 former Chargers Owner Gene Klein said he would discuss a new contract with his tight end before this season, despite the fact Winslow still has two years remaining on his present contract. But those discussions got pushed back when Klein decided to sell the team. New Owner Alex Spanos agreed to honor Kleins promise. The Chargers and Winslows agent, Jim Steiner of St.

Louis, began shower. The bus is going to be leaving. Kellen Winslow wasnt on the bus. Nor was he on the airplane which flew the Chargers back to San Diego. Instead, he carried out his promise to retire from professional football if his contract situation wasnt resolved by the weekend.

While his rowdy teammates were winging back to San Diego, Winslow caught a flight to St. Louis. To be with my mom and family, he said. But before Winslow left, he made a parting statement, ripping the Chargers front office. For starters, he accused the front office of not wanting to win.

Why else do you let John Jefferson get away, or a Fred Dean get away? he said. "Or why do you wait to sign the best quarterback iFoster makes Padres strategy backfire low said his unsettled situation wouldnt affect his performance. After the game, he said he was wrong. The first quarter and the first half of the second quarter I wasnt able to go out and play my game, he said. I felt tight, tense.

Dan Fouts performed surgery on the Vikmgs secondary, completing 21 of 28 passes for 292 yards and two touchdowns. NEW YORK (AP) George Foster didnt feel slighted when San Diego reliever Rich Goose Gossage twice walked Keith Hernandez intentionally in order to pitch to the New York Mets outfielder. The tactic worked the first time, but backfired in the 12th inning Sunday, when Foster slapped a two-out single to score Mookie Wilson for a 3-2 New ork victory over the Padres.

Kelvin Chapman singled to right with one out to set the stage for the 13th homer of the year by the Met first baseman.

San Diego tied it in the second. Carmelo Martinez opened the inning with his 13th homer, an inside-the-park drive that eluded New York centerfielder Wilsons dive at the outfield fence. Two outs later, Lollar singled to right, moved to second on a wild pitch by Met starter Walt Terrell, and scored when Terrell threw wildly past first base after fielding Alan Wiggins ground ball. The Padres, who have now lost four games in a row, head to Los Angeles for a two-game series beginning tonight. Despite Sundays loss, the Padres didnt lose any ground as the second-place Astros also lost.

The next inning, Rick Cerones two-run single capped a three-run rally that gave the Yankees a 4-3 lead. With California leading 3-1, Don Mattingly opened the sixth with his 20th homer. Dave Winfield doubled, and, with one out, left-hander John Curtis, 1-2, came on to strike out Ken Griffey. But Mike Pagli-arulo and Omar Moreno both walked to load the bases.

Luis Sanchez took over and Cerone ended a 6-for-39 slump with a single that scored Winfield and Pagliarulo and gave the Yankees a 4-3 lead. Jay Howell, 7-4, blanked the Angels over the final five innings in relief of Fontenot to pick up the victory. The Angels led 3-0 after their first three batters of the game as Fred Lynns 18th homer following a leadoff double by Beniquez and a walk to Bobby Grich. Pagliarulos leadoff homer in the fifth, his fourth, made it 3-1. The Yankees added an eighth inning run on Don Baylors double, Griffeys fly to center that enabled Baylor to move to third and Pagliarulos sacrifice fly.

In the fifth inning of Sundays game, Meacham the former San Diego State star decided hed had enough. When Angel righthander Ron Romamck bounced a pitch off his helmet, Meacham stormed the mound to trigger the first of two melees.

I wish it didnt happen, but I didnt know what else to do. Ive never charged a mound before, said Meacham, whose act awoke the Yankees. Trailing 3-1 at the time, New York fought back for a 5-3 victory over the Angels to avert a series sweep. The Meacham-Romanick incident set up another, more serious battle in the bottom of the inning. New York southpaw Ray Fontenots first pitch sailed behind Juan Beniquez, who also charged the mound to ignite another brawl.

"I wasnt surprised, but I didnt like it, either, said Beniquez. "They should have a rule like in hockey let the two guys who have to fight go at it."
