Winkle'a money was gone, and they had nothing else to do but to sympathize with the farmer and oiler him advice. The article attracted more attention than the usual accounts wherein law-breakers figure, for Santa Cruz Co. has been carefully avoided by swindlers, for most of the residents are known as intelligent people who would not be likely to have swindlers operate on them. To have an old game so successfully worked so near Santa Cruz was what made the mat' ter such an object of conversation. One is that either the box was changed or the money taken out by some sleight-of-hand work before the lid was closed. This could be done while Winkle was engaged in conversation. Some of his friends advance the theory of hypnotism, but that is hardly north discussing, for on the face of the transaction it is a case of out-and-out trickery.

Locust ftt. the account given in Sunday a Skntinkl. He said that on Wednesday morning a man calling him sell George Perry called at the ranch, Baying that he wanted, to purchase a ranch for his sister and her two children, who reside in Sacramento. Mr. Winkle replied that tie did not care to sell his ranch, as it produced a comfortable living for himself and family.

Perry was told by the farmer that Beetzel's place on Soquel creek was for sale. It contained 100 acreB, and Mr. Winkle thought it would suit. Perry went away, ostensibly going in the direction of the place referred to. On Thursday afternoon Perry drove up to Winkle's ranch in a buggy obtained at the Eagle Stable on Front St.

He said to the former that he did not think the Beetzel ranch would suit his Bister, but that the Winkle place would. He then asked Winkle if he would not get into the buggy and show him the boundaries of ttie Tarle.ton ranch in Doyle Gulch which he heard was for sale. Winkie eaid it would not be any trouble to accommodate the visitor, and got into the buggy. They drove olf up Doyle Gulch. In the meantime Perry had been taken into the good graces of the innocent granger by telling him that he wnn a rtiemher of the Masonic order, to which Winkle also belongs.

It was by this that he gained Winkle's confidence. After they had ridden a quarter of a mile a man sprang up suddenly from somewhere. "Hello, where did you come from said Winkle in astonishment. Perry also pretended to be surprised. The man, who carried a tin box under his arm, replied that he had been up the gulch selling lottery tickets; that the company he represented had plenty of money iu a San Francisco bank and would promply pay any amount drawn.

Perry suggested that he and. Winkle try their luck. The latter objected, saying that he never had anything to do with lotteries and gambling, and besides he did not have any money with which to purchase lottery tickets. "That's all right," said Perry, "I'll buy the ticket fur you; but let's see how its done." The lottery dealer explained that tho tickets were only one dollar each, and then Bhowed how the raw ing was made. Winkle does not remember if three or tlve tickets were used, but, anyway the dealer held the tickets in his hand.
