5. good Valid any B-4 TIMES-ADVOCATE, ESCONDIDO, SUNDAY, JULY 19, 1981 PARDEE Continued from B-1 "But here he was, back to work the next day trying to help the team for next year. That approach interested me." There is another reason why Pardee accepted his current position with the Chargers. Essentially, he has the same football responsibilities he had with the Redskins. He ran the defense at Washington and left the offensive side of the game to his assistants.

In San Diego, Coryell runs the offense and has given Pardee control of the defense. "My football duties are very similar," he said. "But a head coach's job is to solve problems. That's all he does morning, noon and night is solve problems. "The enjoyment I get from football is the coaching part.

What I have is all the best parts of coaching with minimum time spent on the other parts." Another question fans ask is, How is Pardee going to improve the Chargers' defense, which seemed good when you look at one set of statistics and very mediocre when you look at another? The team ranked sixth out of 28 clubs in yards allowed per game 293.2. But it was 18th in points allowed per game, 20.4. In defense of the defense, in losses to Oakland, Dallas and Washington the Chargers gave up 38, 42 and 40 points, respectively, boosting that average. Still, defense was to blame for the Chargers' loss to Oakland. So just how's he going to do it? Just how is Pardee going to improve that defense? The same way he did it at Chicago and Washington with multiple defenses, having the right men at the right place at the right time.

On second-and-eight maybe you take out two linebackers and bring in a faster linebacker and a defensive back. On third-and-one you take out a defensive back and bring in another defensive lineman or linebacker. Pardee will also use a variety of coverages, something not utilized much in the Chargers' recent past under former defensive coordinator Jackie Simpson. Under Simpson, now the defensive coordinator at Seattle, the Chargers were criticized for their predictability on defense. like it. More players play, so fewer of them are sitting on the bench grumbling. "We found out that the more players that were i involved the better their rapport was with each other," said Pardee.

"They practiced better and we had better meetings. The morale was a big side factor. But we didn't go to it with that purpose." Specifically, Pardee is looking for more depth at the corners. He thinks Willie Buchanon and Mike Williams are excellent. But he noted that when Williams was injured last year the Staff Photo by Mike Franklin Chargers' assistant head coach Jack Pardee "They seem to set in the same coverages," said Mark Murphy, Pardee's free safety and defensive signal-caller at Washington.

Pardee would like to say he thought long and hard about his defensive system. He did not. "We went to it at Chicago five years ago out of necessity," he said. "We had to try to stop the run because if you can't stop the run they're never going to put it up. So we put the bigger guys in and made it halfway safe to pass.

"Then, if we stopped the run on first down, we brought in the faster guys." There is an added plus to this system. The players "I'm involved this year and we'll see what happens," he says. "I hope I get another chance at head coaching. But there's a lot of good coaches who haven't gotten those jobs, too. I'll just worry about this year and go on from there." Some might expect problems to surface between Coryell, the team's head coach, and Pardee, a man used to being the head coach.

Pardee says it won't be so. "I'll respond to him just like I expected my assistants to respond to me," he said. "I understand the needs of a head coach. I'll probably be more supportive than somebody who hasn't walked in those shoes." Football has consumed John Perry 'Jack' Pardee's life since he grew up in Christoval, Texas. That West Texas town was so small that the high school only played six-man football.

But Pardee was good and soon he was playing at Texas under Bear Bryant. What did he learn from Bryant? "You might say he was my first coach because I hadn't played any 11-man football," said Pardee. "I didn't have too many preconceived ideas. He was an honest, fair, sound coach. I thought everybody did things that way.

Then I found out everybody doesn't. "He taught me the way things should be done and how to win." After being drafted in the second round by the Los Angeles Rams in 1957, Pardee began a 15-year professional career as an outside linebacker, 13 years with the Rams and two with the Redskins. He was named All-Pro twice. He was noted as a consistent, smart player. "I saw him play on TV and he seemed like a real hard worker, an intelligent player," said Murphy, the Redskins' free safety.

"As a coach, he demands that his players study. That's one of his 3 prerequisites. He puts in a lot of time studying the opposition and he wants to make sure you take advantage of it." Pardee demands that his players study the game because George Allen demanded the same from him. Pardee played under Allen at Los Angeles and Washington. "That's the biggest thing I learned from Allen," said Pardee.

"The competition is so keen you look for that little edge. The personnel is not that much different. "I don't want players who won't study and who won't work. I want them to put the burden on themselves. "I enjoyed playing for George," Pardee said.

"He appreciated veteran players and by that time I qualifled for that category." Having played his final down in 1972 for the Redskins, Pardee stayed at Washington for another year as an assistant under Allen. After just one season as an underling he became a head coach in the World Football League. Pardee encountered more problems off the field in that league than he did on it. His Florida Blazers sometimes went weeks without paychecks, but they seldom went without victories. His team was 14-6 and advanced to the league finals, losing to Birmingham by a point.

For his efforts, Pardee was named the league's coach of the year. Pardee did not have to wait long for his chance i in the NFL. The Chicago Bears were impressed with the job he had done in the other league. They offered him their head coaching job and Pardee took it. He became the NFL's youngest head coach in 1975, at age 38.

He finished 4-10 that first year, but quickly improved to 7-7 the next season. In 1977 he guided the Bears to a 9-5 mark and their first playoff appearance in 14 years. Again, Pardee was named Coach of the Year. Then it was back to Washington. The Redskins were a mediocre 8-8 in '78, but they followed that with a 10-6 record in '79, a season in which they came within seconds of posting the best record in the NFC.

In fact, he said the Chargers had to make adjustments to compensate for Williams' replacements, which hurt the Chargers in other areas. He hopes that Irvin Phillips, a rookie the Chargers drafted on the third round out of Arkansas Tech, and free agent Nate Wright, a 13-year NFL veteran, will provide that depth. There is a certain risk in hiring Jack Pardee.

The Chargers must know they will not have him long. He will likely become a head coach again, soon. He admits that's his goal, but he hasn't set any timetables. "The treatment either works or it doesn't," said Pardee, who has a noticeable scar on his right arm from the surgery. "You take it and if you get by six months you keep watching it. There's not a lot of choices or alternatives." Pardee remembers the doctors telling him he should have his personal life straightened out before entering the hospital. He says the experience changed him. "As a young man of 28 with a family, it helped me get my priorities straightened out," he said.
