D2 TIMES-ADVOCATE, Escondido, Thursday, May 28, 1987 Sportsgram Giants release Minton; Uribe disabled again Giants relief pitcher Greg Minton and his $750,000 contract were given their unconditional release Wednesday afternoon. To fill his spot on the roster, the Giants activated left-handed relief pitcher Keith Comstock from their AAA Phoenix club. The Giants also put shortstop Jose Uribe on the 15- day disabled list with a pulled left hamstring. It's the third Uribe has been on the D.L. season.

The Giants replaced Uribe by calling up second baseman Mike Woodard from Phoenix for the second time this season. Minton finished his San Francisco career with a 45-52 record and a 3.23 ERA. He had 125 saves, just two short of Gary Lavelle's club record 127. Jordan receives an NBA player of the year award NBA scoring champion Mi- chael Jordan wants everyone to know that he can play defense, too. "I try to play both ends of the court," the Chicago Bulls guard said Wednesday after receiving Seagram Sports Award as the NBA's player of the year.

"I was second in the league in steals and I had more blocked shots than any guard." Last week, Magic Johnson of the Los Angeles Lakers was named the league's Most Valuable Player by a panel of writers and broadcasters. Johnson, who averaged 23.9 points and 12.2 assists per game, led the Lakers to the league's best regular-season record. If you believe the computer, though, Jordan was the better overall player.

Phony phone message traced to sports agents A telephone number left for two University of Mississippi football players by a man who said he was a reporter for The Atlanta Constitution was traced to a California firm of sports agents. The caller was trying to reach wide receiver J.R. Ambrose and offensive tackle Rod Irvin, both of whom will be seniors and pro prospects in the fall. Cynthia Daniels, a secretary at the Ole Miss sports information office, said the caller identified himself as reporter "Buddy Miles," and requested the telephone numbers of the players. When she declined to give the caller the players' numbers, the man left a tollfree number for the players to call.

The number belongs to Professional Management Group in Los Angeles. The two partners in the agency, Neal Allen and Doug Brenner, said they did not make the phone call and know nothing about it. Omaha wants long-term world series contract The NCAA won't go along with Omaha's request for a long-term contract to be host to the College World Series, although the Division I baseball tournament likely will remain in the city at least through 1989, the director of men's championships for the NCAA said. Jerry Miles said his organization has no plans to move the series out of Omaha but wants to keep its flexibility because of the potential for growth. Harmon seeks immunity in case against agents Running back Ronnie Harmon of the NFL Buffalo Bills will refuse to answer questions in a federal Winslow grand jury investigation of New York sports agents Norby Walters and Lloyd Bloom if he doesn't get immunity from prosecution, The Atlanta Constitution reported today. "The FBI told him (Harmon) just the opposite of what the U.S. attorney told me," said Harmon's attorney, Martin Rauch.

"Because of that, anything Ronnie told the FBI is out of reach as it relates to him. If he doesn't get immunity, he won't testify." Agent: Dickerson brought on his own problems Eric Dickerson's former agent, who has been sued by the Los Angeles Rams running back for $12.5 million for alleged financial mismanagement, called the legal action unfounded. Jack Rodri, who was fired by Dickerson a year ago, said that whatever financial troubles are plaguing Dickerson were brought on by Dickerson himself. "Eric is on the road to financial disaster," Rodri told the Los Angeles Times. "If he was smart, he'd drop the lawsuit, come back and beg me to manage his money." Georgia Tech may drop three athletic programs The Georgia Tech Athletic Board is considering dropping swimming, wrestling and gymnastics from its intercollegiate program, Athletic Director Homer Rice said.

Wrestling may have the best chance to survive, Rice said. A committee has been formed and "they have some interesting ideas for funding." Jim Murphy, Tech's business manager for athletics, said the operating budget for the three sports, excluding coaching salaries and scholarships, is about $25,000. University of Portland eyeing Blazers' Steele University of Portland officials insist they launched a nationwide search for a new basketball coach, but their eyes were focused just down the road at Portland Trail Blazer headquarters. Larry Steele, who in nine seasons with the NBA club was one of the team's most popular players, signed a five-year contract Wednesday to head the Pilot basketball program, even though he's never coached a game. The selection of the 38-year-old former University of Kentucky player comes after Trail Blazer assistant coach Rick Adelman, a former teammate of Steele, turned down the job.

Ayers not ready, despite advice, to retire John Ayers, a fixture at left guard for the San Francisco 49ers for a decade, has not been invited to training camp for the coming season after ignoring Coach Bill Walsh's advice to retire. "John was our best left guard a year ago," Walsh said. "He's not now." Ayers, who joined the 49ers in 1976 out of West Texas State, said he was disappointed that he won't even be able to compete for a spot on the team.

Ayers said he isn't ready to retire and still wants to play. Until Ayers injured his left knee late in the season, he had started 69 straight games, the team's longest streak. When he does return, Winslow expects to pick up where he left off last year, when he made 45 of his 64 receptions in the final nine games. During that span, once again Winslow felt like he was the focal point of the Chargers offense, just as he had been before his injury.

"I still stand in the same place I did before," Winslow said. "A lot of people say, 'Well, they tried to trade him and nobody wanted I've heard all the rumors and that stuff doesn't faze me. Last year wasn't the greatest year for me or the team, but you can only look up. "I know guys who would kill for 64 catches in a season," Winslow continued. "For me it was subpar.

Our philosophy was a little differ- Chargers Notes Saunders says Banks not unhappy By Jay Posner Times Advocate Sportswriter SAN DIEGO Almost matter-of-factly, Chargers Coach Al Saunders on Wednesday said he has "been in constant contact" recently with linebacker Chip Banks. "I talked to him on a couple of occasions," Saunders, said of Banks, who was acquired April 28 in a trade with Cleveland but has been difficult, if not impossible, to reach since. Several Chargers officials spoke with Banks the day of the trade, but it was several weeks before Saunders was able to speak again with the All-Pro linebacker. Though Banks hinted immediately after the trade that he might not report to San Diego, Saunders said, "As far as his willingness to join our organization, he has never indicated to me one, that he was dissatisfied with the trade, or two, that he did not plan on being here. I'm not concerned at this point." Saunders added he does not yet know when Banks will arrive here.

The club has been holding informal workouts since May 1, and most of the team's veterans, including quarterback Dan Fouts, tight end Kellen Winslow and linebacker Billy Ray Smith, have participated at one time or another. "There will be a time when we would like to have him come in," Saunders said, "but right now I told him he needs to get his business affairs (in Georgia) settled, and we could certainly catch him up on what we are doing. "It would be good if he could be here now, but it's not a necessity. He's got a lot of things to do from a business standpoint, and I understand that." Efforts to reach Banks have been unsuccessful. The Chargers continue to re- Celtics Continued from page D1 (118-111, as Parish had 34 points, 19 rebounds and 9 assists).

The Celtics had enough things to worry about even before learning of Parish's suspension. It was only last weekend the Pistons beat them by 18 and 29, respectively, in this building. Moreover, the Celtics have lost four of their last five playoff road games, yielding bloated 130 points a game byproduct. "One of the major things we've got to be concerned with tomorrow night i is the start of the game," Rodgers contended. "Each of those five road teams got off to a quick start.

We know Detroit will want to run and quicken the pace of the game." Neither team will lack for motivation. The Pistons must surely be upset with themselves for letting the vulnerable Celtics get away in three Boston Garden games. Now they are returning to what is commonly referred to in these parts as "Isiah's House," and the mansion's namesake will be seeking to atone for his faux pas Tuesday night. The Celtics know enough to expect a raucous greeting Thursday night in the Silverdome, and they would like nothing more than to silence an expected crowd of 30,000 by playing some intelligent basketball and stealing an improbable triumph. Rodgers is banking on an extension of Tuesday's play to accomplish this difficult feat.

"We accomplished one of our objectives in the last game," he said. "We were very disciplined offensively, and that keep their running game under control. We've got to play that way again, and also play some good, solid defense. As far as motivation is concerned, having been run out of here twice in one weekend, that in itself should be a motivating force." The steal and the layup? Now just a part of Celtics history. Life goes on.

The Silverdome and 30,000 Celtics-haters is a whole new reality. ent (in the second half of 1986, after Al Saunders took over as head coach). We tried to control the ball more, and there's no better way to control the ball than throw an -yard pass across the middle to the tight end. "Don Meredith said you can complete a pass to the tight end every down, which I try to get the quarterbacks to do. But it doesn't work all the Winslow said he has gained extra motivation from both receivers coach Charlie Joiner, a teammate since Winslow's arrival in San Diego in 1979, and Saunders, who is perhaps Winslow's greatest fan.

On Joiner: "I have the utmost respect for Charlie. I think having Charlie as my coach motivates me to work a little harder than I might have. He played 18 years of this game and I use his career I'm not saying I'm going to play 18 years I'm not that crazy as a model of things I want to accomplish before I retire." On Saunders: "When a coach organize their scouting department, though specific areas of responsibility have yet to be decided. Joining the club Wednesday was Rudy Feldman, a Chargers assistant coach from 1974-77. Feldman also coached for the St.

Louis Cardinals from 1978-85. He began his coaching career in 1957 and was head coach at the University of New Mexico from 1968-73. Since the end of last season, the Chargers have hired Feldman a and former Raiders assistant coach Chet Franklin. Three men have left the team: Director of Scouting Ron Nay and scouts John Butler (to Buffalo) and Bill Groman (to Atlanta). Also Wednesday, the Chargers announced the signings of 15 more shows that type of faith in you, any player with any responsibility to the team will work hard to try to respond.

That's what I'm trying to do." Off the field, Winslow is trying to gain admission to law school. His preference is the University of San Diego, but Winslow said the programs at USD start only in the fall and summer. "If I could work out with any law school in the country a program I could start in the offseason, I would do that," said Winslow, who is planning to take the Law School Aptitude Test (LSAT) in December. Winslow is also trying to maintain his sense of humor and doing a decent job of it. Asked if he feels old this week, Winslow, who will be 30 on Nov.

5, said, "I feel old when I walk into the locker room and 90 percent of the guys in there now were in the eighth grade when I entered the NFL." One of those guys is Bernstine, who admits he went through high free agents, including San Diego State offensive lineman Greg Williamson. Also signed were: kickers Steve Jordan and Jeff Gaffney; running backs Kaulana Park, Kevin Scott and Eddie Goodlow; wide receiver Eric Mullins; offensive linemen Steve Knight and David Diaz-Infante; linebackers Tyronne Stowe, James Hall, Joe Mauntel, Fred Jones and Rick Spielman; and cornerback Carl Brazley. The club's roster now numbers more than 100 players. Steve Ortmayer, director of football operations, said he would like to take no more than 100 players to training camp. In addition to the free agents, Ortmayer said, veteran offensive school idolizing Winslow.

And, the rookie said, "I'm not here to take his job." Good thing. Said Winslow: don't look at him as a threat, just like when I came in I don't think Bob Klein looked at me like a threat. I look at him as someone who can help the team." Winslow even joked about his reaction when he heard the Chargers had selected Bernstine. "The day it happened I called Charlie (Joiner) up and said I didn't want to disappoint anybody and not call because I knew they expected me to call. I was about to give him a list of teams that I would like to be traded to and ones I would not go to.

We got a big laugh out of it. "I understood what they were doing and really, I lost no sleep over it. They were just trying to improve the ballclub, and they took the best available athlete." In 1979, the Chargers used that same philosophy to draft another tight end. His name was Winslow. Notes lineman Jim Leonard has agreed to terms with the club.

Injury report: Cornerback Ken Taylor, bothered by a sore back since last season, is recovering well, Ortmayer said. "He seems to be coming along good, but he's not completely 100 percent ready to go," Ortmayer said. "We're hoping he will be (before training camp begins)." Saunders added that tight end Eric Sievers (knee) is also expected to be ready before camp begins in late July.
