Supplement to the Times-Advocate, Saturday, September 12, 1987 39 Coaches Continued from page 27 Gunther Cunningham, defensive line: In his third season with the Chargers. Under his tutelage, last year's defense registered a club-record 62 sacks. Cunningham coached for the Indianapolis Colts from 1982-84. Before that, he was an assistant for the Hamilton Tiger Cats of the Canadian Football League, the University of California, Stanford, Arkansas and Oregon. Cunningham, 38, graduated from the University of Oregon with a degree in anthropology.

He is married, has two children and lives in Rancho Bernardo. Mike Haluchak, linebackers: In his second season with the Chargers. Haluchak previously coached with the Oakland Invaders of the USFL. He has college stops at North Carolina State, California, University of the Pacific and Cal StateFullerton. He played fullback, safety and linebacker for Southern California from 1967-70 and appeared in two Rose Bowl games.

One team coming after the Giants is the Redskins, who were 14-2 against the rest of the league, but 0-3 against New York, including a 17-0 loss in the NFC championship game. One way they're trying is by beefing up 280-pound guard Russ Grimm has replaced 255- pound Jeff Bostic at center to better protect Jay Schroeder, who threw six interceptions in one game against the Giants last year and was shut out in another. Washington is solid on offense wide receivers Gary Clark and Art Monk are dangerous receivers and so is running back Kelvin Bryant. Bryant, who is injury prone, will be the spot backup to George Rogers, who with Keith Griffin will do the bulk of the ball-carrying.

But the defense is a bit shaky, meaning the Redskins may challenge the Giants again but may have to settle for a wild-card playoff berth. Philadelphia, 5-10-1 in Buddy Ryan's first season as head coach, is the sleeper if everyone stays healthy. "I honestly think we can contend for the playoffs," says quarterback Randall Cunningham, who is making a concerted effort to stay in the pocket this season. "You never know. Maybe we can get lucky when we play the Giants and Redskins and catch them on a down day." For Cunningham, however, the relevant number is 104.

That's the number of sacks 30 more than the previous NFL record that the Philadelphia offensive line gave up last year. If he has time, he has one of the NFL's best receivers in Mike Quick. fornia Lutheran. He is married and lives in University City. Bobby Jackson, running backs: Jackson joins the Chargers after a four-year stint with the Atlanta Falcons.

His coaching career spans 18 years, including college stops at Florida State, Kansas State, Louisville and Tennessee. He was a two-time Little All-American running back for Howard College (now Samford University) in Birmingham, Alabama. Jackson, 47, graduated from Howard and has a Master's degree in physical education from George Peabody College (now part of Vanderbilt). He is married, has two children and lives in Rancho Bernardo. Charlie Joiner, receivers: Who better to teach receivers than the most productive pass-catcher in NFL history? Joiner retired after the 1986 season having caught a record 750 passes for a record 12,146 yards in 18 seasons with Houston, Cincinnati and the Chargers.

He was a three-time Pro Bowl selection and was selected the Chargers' most inspirational player seven times. Joiner, 39, attended Grambling State University. He is married, has two daughters and lives in Moreover, Keith Byars, the potential blue-chip running back, enters the season with yet another broken foot, leaving the running to Anthony Toney and Charles Crawford and perhaps 12th-round rookie Bobby Morse. The defense, however, could be outstanding, with Brown joining Reggie White on the defensive line. Dallas lost eight of its last nine games to finish 7-9, its first sub.500 season since 1964, and was in trouble even before training camp began.

Then Mike Sherrard, its best (and only) receiving threat, suffered a season-ending broken leg and Herschel Walker was slowed by a knee injury. Add quarterback Danny White's problematical recovery from a broken wrist sustained last year; weaknesses on the offensive line and at linebacker; an aging defensive line that needs rejuvenation from oft-injured Kevin Brooks, and rookie Danny Noonan, who didn't sign until last week, and the Cowboys may have trouble staying out of the cellar. As of now, that spot is reserved for St. Louis, which was 4-11-1 on merit last year and had one of the most peculiar drafts known to man. Neil Lomax remains the quarterback, although Cliff Stoudt is pressing him while Kelly Stouffer, the surprise first-round draft choice, remains unsigned.

Lomax, still just 28, could return to his Pro Bowl form of 1984 if Roy Green can return to form at receiver after two injury- years. But running back is thin behind Stump Mitchell. The defense, switching from 3-4 to 4-3, is the strength of the team, particularly if linebacker E.J. Junior returns to his form of three years ago. Rancho Bernardo.
