Kennedy, the American League's starting catcher in last year's All-Star game, has started just 26 games for the Orioles since June 10. He is batting .211 with two home runs and 14 RBI and has thrown out 10 of 54 runners attempting to steal against him.

Well take a dash of Gold Glove and put it here in the middle.

Then well take a pinch of power and slide it to his right. Toss in a little uncontrolled aggression on the other side and I think weve got it. Voila. Meet the new Padres outfield. The solution seems so obvious, its amazing nobody came up with it before.

What does a team looking for more offense and power do when there arent enough spots on the field for the players who could help? Jack McKeon found the answer, and it may go down in history as one the Padres best moves since they dumped their mustard yellow uniforms. He took Tony Gwynn, the National Leagues Gold Glove rightfielder the last two seasons md moved him to center, opening rightfield for John Kruk, primarily leftfielder in recent weeks. Kruks move makes Carmelo Martinez the regular leftfielder. Suddenly, the Padres outfield packs some punch. This threesome may not make anybody forget the Yankees Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris and Co.

outfield of the early 1960s, but theyre much better than any of the other groups McKeon and Larry Bowa have pieced together since the trade of Kevin McReynolds. You dont believe it? Take a look 'at Tuesdays game in which the Padres new outfield combined for seven runs, six hits, six RBI and three homers, two of them by Martinez. Thats about a weeks worth of offense for this club. The move makes tremendous sense. The Padres have been crying for more offense for the last two years.

During that same time, Martinez, one of their biggest power threats, has been tied to the bench, a victim of the numbers game at first base and leftfield, his tw5 primary positions. Despite his part-time status, Martinez has still managed to hit 10-home runs, tying him for the team club lead, and knock in 46 rubs, just nine behind team leader Gwynn. i Thus the experiment. Why not? Marvell Wynne and Stan Jefferson are struggling offensively. Even though Wynne is tied with Martinez for the team lead in homers, hes not generally a big power threat.

It was never in the Padres plans to make him the regular center-fielder. But the continuing inability of Jefferson and others such as Shane Mack and Shawn Abner to take command in center left them with a gaping hole in their lineup. No more. When you think about it, Gwynn is the ideal prototype for a centerfielder. Hes a good fielder with good speed and a better-than-average arm.

"Im not disappointed at all in my play or my camp. 1 think I've had a good camp.

I think 1 made a lot of progress. I think Ive played well in a new system with new people." That Laufenberg, a perennial backup, was named to start defies the odds. Although the Chargers quarterback situation was unstable coining into training camp, with Malone coming off the worst season in his eight-year career at Pittsburgh, and Mark Vlasic still trying to learn the ropes in the NFL, Laufenberg was still a long shot to win the job. But Laufenberg, 29. quite simply went out and took the job from the three other candidates, including Steve Fuller who was released Tuesday.

In the teams three exhibition games, Laufenberg out placed Malone, his main competition for the job. Babe Laufenberg, with virtually no National Football League experience, who has been released seven times, was named the Chargers starting quarterback Tuesday, winning out over Mark Malone.

We have made the decision to start Babe Laufenberg this week, said Coach A1 Saunders, and he is the projected starter Sept. 4 (against the Los Angeles Raiders). Said Laufenberg: I feel good. Of course, by the same token I feel bad in a certain sense. Its been a while coming for me, obviously.

I felt like I played well. Its obviously nice for me. But I consider Mark a friend. Of course, it's tough on the other side Ive been on the other side. For Malone, the news was a disappointment.

He even skipped playing baseball for the Lobos last spring. The 6-foot-3, 205-pound sophomore spent all summer in Albuquerque to work out with the receivers in hopes of avoiding a repeat of last year's 0-11 record. So intent was his focus that the former Orange Glen High School standout lost 20 pounds. Everything was fine. That is, until fall practice opened.

After just four days of practice, his starting slot was handed over to an incoming freshman, and Head Coach Mike Sheppard asked Daugherty to redshirt this season.
